Chapter 3

I noticed the missing clothes on a Tuesday morning.

Two training shirts and a sleep tunic—the one with the torn hem I'd been meaning to mend. They'd been on the laundry line behind the pack house the night before. By dawn, they were gone.

I stood in the laundry yard with a basket of clean linens against my hip and stared at the empty space where my things should have been. The other clothes were still there. Just mine were missing.

My wolf stirred beneath my ribs. *Mark it,* she said.

I went back inside. Opened my notebook. Wrote the date and the items. Then I closed it and went to work in the infirmary like nothing had happened.

Because what was I going to do? Report stolen laundry to an Alpha who wouldn't meet my eyes? To a pack that had already decided I didn't matter?

I said nothing. And I waited.

Three days later, Serenity disappeared.

I was restocking bandages when the alarm went up—a series of howls that meant search party, immediate assembly. I dropped what I was holding and ran to the courtyard. Kaiser was already there in human form, barking orders to the warriors. His face was tight. Scared.

"Serenity didn't come down for breakfast," Winifred said, her voice carrying across the assembled wolves. "Her room is empty. No scent trail past the eastern border."

Kaiser's jaw clenched. "Form search teams. Now."

I watched them organize. Watched Kaiser assign the strongest trackers to the northern and western quadrants. Watched Winifred's eyes land on me with the kind of precision that made my stomach drop.

"Novalee," she said. "You'll take the eastern forest team."

I looked at her. She looked back. And in that moment, I knew.

"Yes, ma'am," I said quietly.

The eastern forest was dense and dark even in daylight. I ran with three Deltas—none of whom spoke to me as we spread out to search. My wolf was alert now, her senses sharper than they'd been in years. She smelled the wrongness before I did.

*Blood,* she said. *Old blood. Staged.*

I slowed. Ahead, through the trees, I saw disturbed earth. Claw marks gouged into bark. And then—fabric.

My training shirt. The grey one with the Shadowmere crest. Torn and trampled into the dirt.

One of the Deltas saw it at the same time. He looked at the shirt. Then he looked at me. I watched the calculation happen in real time—the way his expression shifted from neutral to suspicious in the span of a breath.

"That's yours," he said.

I didn't answer. I was already moving toward the scene, scanning for what they'd missed. The claw marks were too uniform—parallel gouges at identical depths, like someone had dragged their claws down the bark deliberately rather than in the chaos of a real struggle. The fabric had been folded before it was torn. I could see the crease lines still visible in the weave.

And Serenity's scent—honeyed vanilla—was nowhere.

A victim's scent should saturate an attack site. Fear-scent, pain-scent, the biological panic that came with real violence. There was none of it. Just my own scent, smeared thick over every surface like someone had rubbed my clothing into the ground on purpose.

"We need to report this to the Alpha," another Delta said. His hand was already on his comm link.

I opened my mouth to explain what I was seeing—the folded fabric, the staged claw marks, the absent victim scent—but my wolf growled low in warning.

*Too late,* she said. *They've already decided.*

I looked at the three Deltas. All of them were staring at me now. Not with confusion. With certainty.

I kept my face neutral. "Let's bring the evidence back," I said quietly. "The Alpha will want to see it."

But I knew. Even as we gathered the torn clothing into evidence bags, even as we marked the site and radioed our findings, I knew exactly what was coming.

Winifred didn't wait for a formal investigation.

By the time we returned to the pack house, she'd already convened the pack in the courtyard. Wolves lined the perimeter—warriors, Deltas, Omegas, everyone. Kaiser stood at Winifred's side, his face unreadable.

I walked into the center of the courtyard with dirt still on my hands and my wolf screaming warnings I couldn't act on.

Winifred's voice cut through the murmuring crowd. "Novalee Duncan attacked Serenity Watson out of jealousy and attempted to drive her from this territory."

The courtyard went silent.

I stepped forward. "That's not—"

"Evidence was found in the eastern forest," Winifred continued, speaking over me like I hadn't said anything at all. "Novalee's clothing. Her scent. Signs of violent struggle. Serenity is missing. The facts speak for themselves."

"The facts are wrong," I said, louder now. My wolf surged beneath my skin. "The clothing was folded before it was torn. The claw marks are staged. Serenity's scent isn't anywhere near the site—"

"Enough." Winifred's tone carried the weight of someone who had shaped this pack's social order for decades. "You will not compound your crime with lies."

I looked at Kaiser. He was staring at the ground. His jaw was tight. His hands were clenched at his sides. But he didn't speak.

*Say something,* I thought desperately through the bond. *You know me. You know I wouldn't—*

Nothing. The bond was silent. Dead air where his voice should have been.

Winifred turned to address the pack. "Effective immediately, Novalee Duncan is stripped of all pack house management duties. She will be reassigned to latrine maintenance and food preparation under Omega supervision."

The pack didn't protest. A few wolves looked uncomfortable. Most just nodded. Maren, standing near the back, met my eyes for a brief second before looking away.

I stood in the center of the courtyard with a hundred wolves watching and felt something inside me crack. Not break. Crack. Like ice under weight that hasn't collapsed yet but will.

My wolf was silent now. But I could feel her. Awake. Watching. Waiting.

"Do you understand?" Winifred asked.

I looked at her. Then at Kaiser. Then at the assembled pack that had just watched me be convicted without a trial.

"Yes," I said quietly. "I understand."

Winifred dismissed the assembly with a wave of her hand. The wolves dispersed. Kaiser turned and walked back into the pack house without looking at me once.

I stood alone in the empty courtyard as the sun climbed higher, and I thought about my notebook. About the missing laundry. About three years of soon.

And I began to understand what my wolf had been waiting for.
