Chapter 2

The full-pack run was supposed to be routine.

We gathered at dawn in the clearing north of the pack house—warriors, Deltas, even a few Omegas who'd earned the privilege. Kaiser stood at the formation's head in wolf form, his dark fur catching the early light. I shifted and took my place near the middle, where unmated wolves without rank usually ran. Where I'd run for three years.

Serenity stood at the edge.

I noticed because my wolf noticed. She'd been more alert lately, more present beneath my ribs—like something was waking up after a long sleep. Now she fixed on Serenity's position the way you'd watch a crack forming in ice.

*Edge formation,* my wolf murmured. *Exposed.*

I didn't answer her. I was still getting used to her voice.

Kaiser's howl split the morning, and we ran.

The northern territory opened up in waves—dense forest giving way to rocky slopes, then back to pine-thick cover. My paws hit the ground in rhythm with a hundred others. The pack moved like a single organism, and for a few minutes I let myself get lost in it. The wind. The speed. The collective breath of wolves who belonged to something.

Then the formation fractured.

A rogue burst from the tree line—massive, scarred, moving with the kind of feral speed that came from living outside pack law. It didn't go for Kaiser. It didn't go for the warriors at the front.

It went straight for Serenity.

She screamed—a high, terrified sound that cut through the run like a blade. Kaiser didn't hesitate. He broke formation mid-stride, his wolf pivoting so fast dirt sprayed, and threw himself between Serenity and the rogue. His body became a shield. His snarl shook the air.

The rogue lunged. Kaiser met it head-on, jaws snapping, claws tearing into fur and flesh. The rest of us skidded to a halt, wolves colliding into each other as the formation collapsed. I watched Kaiser pin the rogue, watched his teeth close around its throat—

And then the rogue twisted free and ran.

Not fought. Ran.

It bolted back into the tree line, blood trailing behind it, and disappeared before any of the warriors could pursue. Kaiser stood over Serenity, sides heaving, his wolf radiating that Alpha dominance that made every wolf in the clearing lower their heads instinctively.

Serenity shifted back to human form beneath him. She was shaking. Tears streaked her face. "Thank you," she whispered. "Thank you, thank you—"

Kaiser shifted too. He crouched beside her, one hand on her shoulder, and said something I couldn't hear. Then he looked up at the rest of us—at me—and his expression was unreadable.

"Run's over," he said. "Back to the pack house."

I shifted. Pulled on the clothes I'd tied to my ankle. And I watched the warriors exchange glances as they dressed. Watched the Deltas murmur to each other. Watched Serenity lean into Kaiser's side as he helped her stand.

My wolf was silent now. But I could feel her thinking.

By nightfall, the whispers reached me.

I was restocking the infirmary's wolfsbane antidote supply when Maren slipped in. She was one of the senior Omegas, the kind who'd been in the pack house so long she knew where every body was buried.

"Heard about the run," she said quietly, handing me a stack of clean bandages.

I didn't look up. "Everyone heard about the run."

"Heard the Alpha left formation to save her." Maren's voice dropped. "Heard he didn't even check if anyone else was injured before he went to her."

I set down the antidote bottle. "Is there something you need, Maren?"

She looked at me for a long moment. Then she shook her head and left.

I added it to my private record that night, alone in my small room beside the kitchen. The rogue's behavior: too targeted, too fast to retreat. Real rogues fought to the death when cornered by an Alpha. This one ran the moment Kaiser engaged. Like it had only ever meant to create a scene.

Serenity's position: edge formation, maximum exposure, maximum visibility when the attack came.

The timing: perfect.

I closed the notebook and pressed my palm against the unmarked place on my neck. My wolf stirred beneath my skin, restless and strange.

*He chose her again,* she said.

I didn't answer. But I didn't need to.

Kaiser returned to the pack house near midnight. I heard his footsteps in the hallway—recognized the weight of them even half-asleep. Then I smelled it.

Her scent. Honeyed vanilla, thick and cloying, woven so deep into his fur it had to be hours of contact. Not a brush-by. Not incidental. The kind of saturation that came from lying close, from prolonged touch, from choosing to stay.

Through the incomplete bond, I felt it.

It burned. Not metaphorically. It actually burned—a searing ache that started in my chest and spread through every nerve until I had to bite down on my knuckles to keep from crying out. My wolf, usually muffled and distant beneath the weight of our incomplete bond, surged forward with a sound I'd never heard her make before.

A whine. Low and anguished and utterly broken.

*He chose her again,* she said. And this time her voice was clear. Sharp. Awake in a way she hadn't been in three years.

I stood in the corridor outside the kitchen, one hand pressed to my sternum, and breathed through it. In. Out. In. The pain didn't stop. It just became something I could carry.

When it finally dulled to a manageable ache, I went back to my room. I didn't seek Kaiser out. I didn't demand an explanation.

I opened my notebook and wrote: *Prolonged contact. Hours, not minutes. He came home wearing her.*

My wolf watched me write. She didn't whine again. But I could feel her now, coiled and waiting beneath my ribs, and for the first time in three years I wondered what she was waiting for.
