Chapter 1

I smelled her before I saw her.

The scent hit me the moment I pushed through the pack house doors—honeyed vanilla layered thick over the air, clinging to the banister, soaked into the rugs. My wolf stirred uneasily beneath my ribs. Not pain. Not yet. But the premonition of it, like the air before a storm breaks.

I'd been at the border infirmary for sixteen hours straight. My hands still smelled like wolfsbane antidote and someone else's blood. My shoulders ached. All I wanted was to collapse into bed and maybe—maybe—find Kaiser awake enough to talk. To ask him again when he would mark me. Three years of asking. Three years of soon.

But the vanilla scent thickened as I climbed the stairs, and when I reached the second-floor landing, I stopped.

The Luna's quarters—the rooms I had never been permitted to occupy despite being Kaiser's fated mate—were open. Light spilled into the hallway. Fresh wildflowers sat in a crystal vase on the side table, their petals still dewy. The linens visible through the doorway were new. White. Expensive.

A she-wolf I had never seen stood in the center of the room, her back to me, running her fingers along the edge of the dresser like she was testing whether it belonged to her.

She turned.

She was beautiful in the way that made my stomach drop—delicate features, wide amber eyes, dark hair that fell in soft waves past her shoulders. She looked at me and smiled, hesitant and sweet, like she was apologizing for existing.

"Oh," she said softly. "You must be Novalee."

I didn't answer. I was too busy cataloging. The way she stood. The tilt of her head. The faint tremor in her voice that felt rehearsed.

"Novalee!" Winifred's voice cut through the hallway like a blade. Kaiser's mother appeared at the top of the stairs, flanked by two Omegas carrying linens. She looked at me the way she always did—like I was a stain she hadn't yet figured out how to remove. "You're back. Good. Come meet Serenity."

Serenity. The name settled into my chest like a stone.

Winifred gestured toward the she-wolf in the Luna's quarters. "Serenity Watson. The pack rescued her three weeks ago after a rogue attack in the northern territory. Poor thing lost everything. We've decided to give her a home here."

I looked at Serenity. She looked at me. Her amber eyes were wet, but no tears fell.

"I'm so sorry," Serenity whispered. "I know this must be—"

"It's fine," I said quietly. My voice came out steadier than I expected. "Welcome to Shadowmere."

Winifred's mouth tightened. She hadn't expected me to be gracious. Good.

Footsteps on the stairs. I knew the weight of them before I turned. Kaiser appeared on the landing, still in his field clothes, dirt streaked across his jaw. His eyes found Serenity first.

"You're settling in okay?" His voice was warm. Protective. The kind of warmth I hadn't heard directed at me in months.

Serenity nodded, lowering her gaze. "Everyone's been so kind."

Kaiser smiled. Actually smiled. Then his eyes shifted to me, and the warmth drained out of his face like water through a sieve.

"Novalee," he said. A greeting. Nothing more.

I touched the side of my neck. The unmarked place where a mate bond should sit. My fingers found only smooth skin.

Serenity's scent was on him. Not faint. Not accidental. Layered on his collar, his sleeve, the hollow of his throat. And I could feel it—through the incomplete bond that tied us, I could feel her scent burning against my skin like a brand that hadn't been pressed yet.

My wolf snarled low in my chest. I swallowed it down.

"I need to talk to you," I said to Kaiser. "Privately."

Winifred stiffened. "Kaiser has pack business to attend to tonight. Whatever you need can wait until—"

"It's fine, Mother." Kaiser's voice carried that Alpha edge that made people obey without thinking. He looked at me. "My office. Ten minutes."

He didn't wait for my answer. He turned and walked back down the stairs, and I watched Serenity watch him go. The way her eyes tracked his movement. The way her hand drifted to her own neck, fingers resting where a mark would sit if she had one.

She caught me looking. Smiled again. That same hesitant, apologetic smile.

"I really am sorry," she said softly. "For whatever this is doing to you."

I studied her face. The tremor in her voice. The wetness in her eyes that never quite became tears. I thought about the rogue attack Winifred mentioned—three weeks ago, northern territory. I'd been in the infirmary that night. No one had called me to treat survivors. No one had mentioned a she-wolf.

I smiled back. "Don't worry about it."

I walked past her into the hallway, and as I descended the stairs, I began keeping a mental record. The first entry: Serenity Watson arrived three weeks ago. No healer was summoned. No injury report was filed.

I didn't know what I was building yet. But I was building something.
