Chapter 5

The clearing filled slowly, like water rising.

I stood near the ceremonial fire with Zoe in my arms, watching wolves arrive in clusters. Pack families. Warriors. Omegas who'd been given the afternoon off kitchen duty to witness the Alpha's daughter receive her name. They gathered in loose rings around the stone platform, their voices a low hum of anticipation.

Zoe was warm against my chest, wrapped in the white blessing blanket Leona had embroidered with the Ironveil crest. I'd dressed her myself this morning. Let no one else touch her. The blanket was the only thing of Leona's I'd allowed near my daughter today.

My white ceremony dress moved in the breeze. The fabric was lighter than I'd expected when I'd chosen it three weeks ago, back when I still thought this day would be what it was supposed to be. A blessing. A welcome. A beginning.

Now it felt like armor.

I scanned the crowd and found Raina almost immediately.

She stood near the tribunal stone—a flat granite slab at the clearing's eastern edge, used for pack judgments and formal disputes. It had been there for generations, older than Ironveil itself. Most ceremonies never went near it.

Raina wore her Silverfang warrior blacks, her posture relaxed but her eyes sharp. She had a pack slung over one shoulder. Standard gear for an allied Beta attending a ceremony. No one would look twice.

I knew what was inside it.

Our eyes met across thirty feet of gathered wolves. She gave a single nod. Small. Deliberate.

I nodded back.

Then I looked away before anyone noticed the exchange.

Ford Nelson moved through the crowd, his Beta authority clearing a path without him needing to ask. He took his position at the base of the platform, scanning faces with the focused attention of someone looking for external threats. Rogues. Territorial disputes. Problems from outside.

He wasn't looking for the problem standing three feet behind him.

I watched him settle into parade rest, shoulders back, hands clasped. Tyler's loyal second. The man who'd falsified the border-patrol budget to hide Cabin 17's construction costs. Who'd buried the expenditure so cleanly it had taken Raina two days of records work to find the trail.

Ford had no idea what was coming.

Neither did the rest of them.

The crowd shifted. A ripple of awareness moved through the clearing, and I turned to see why.

Alpha Cade Ashford had arrived.

He came with his Beta—Damon, I thought his name was—and moved to the section reserved for allied Alphas. He didn't make a show of it. Didn't project his aura or command attention. He just walked, and the crowd parted anyway.

I'd heard of him. Everyone had. Nighthollow Pack controlled more eastern territory than any other pack except the Lycan Court itself. Cade Ashford was the kind of Alpha other Alphas watched carefully and spoke about in measured tones.

He was tall. Broad-shouldered. Dark hair, dark eyes, a face that gave nothing away. He wore simple formal blacks, no decoration, no visible weapons. He didn't need them.

He surveyed the clearing with the quiet attentiveness of someone cataloging exits and sight lines without appearing to do so. His gaze moved across the gathered wolves, paused briefly on the ceremonial fire, then landed on me.

Just for a moment.

I met his eyes. Held them. Then looked down at Zoe.

When I glanced back, he'd already moved on, settling into position among the other allied Alphas like he'd been standing there all along.

I exhaled slowly.

Then the Lycan King arrived, and the entire clearing went silent.

Wayne Lawson didn't walk into spaces. He occupied them. The crowd didn't part—it folded, instinctively, wolves stepping back without being told. His aura was massive, controlled, and so deeply embedded in the air that I felt my wolf press against my ribs in response.

Still dormant. Still silent.

But awake enough to recognize what was standing fifty feet away.

Wayne moved to the head of the ceremony platform. He wore formal Lycan blacks, the crest of the Court embroidered in silver across his chest. His hair was steel-grey. His face was carved from stone.

He acknowledged Tyler with a single nod. Dynastic. Minimal. The kind of gesture a king gives a governor.

Then his gaze moved to me.

I stood straighter. Held Zoe carefully. Met his eyes without flinching.

For a moment, Wayne Lawson looked at his granddaughter. His expression didn't warm. But it didn't harden either. It was the look of a man assessing something that belonged, by bloodline, to his domain.

Then he looked away.

I let out a breath I hadn't realized I was holding.

Leona sat in the front row, posture perfect, hands folded in her lap. She caught my eye and smiled. Warm. Encouraging.

I smiled back.

Tyler stepped onto the platform.

The clearing settled. Conversations died. Every wolf turned toward the ceremonial fire.

He wore full Alpha regalia—dark formal robes embroidered with the Ironveil crest, his hair brushed back, his aura shimmering just enough to remind everyone what he was. He looked every inch the devoted father. The proud Alpha. The man who'd just become everything he was supposed to be.

He began his speech.

"My pack. My family. Honored guests." His voice carried across the clearing, warm and steady. "Today we gather to welcome the newest member of Ironveil. My daughter. Zoe."

The crowd murmured approval.

Tyler smiled. "Fatherhood is a gift I never fully understood until I held her for the first time. It changes you. It shows you what matters. What's worth protecting."

He looked directly at me.

"Amelia, my Luna, gave me this gift. She carried our daughter. She brought her into this world. And I am grateful."

The pack watched. Some of the younger wolves looked misty-eyed. An Omega in the back dabbed her face with her sleeve.

I stood there holding Zoe and I felt nothing.

Tyler turned back to the crowd. "A father's duty is to his bloodline. To his pack. To the future we build together."

His voice shifted. The warmth drained.

"And sometimes, that duty requires difficult choices."

The clearing went very still.

Tyler turned to face me fully.

The mark on my neck prickled. Cold. Wrong.

He spoke clearly. Loudly. Every word deliberate.

"I, Tyler Lawson, Alpha of the Ironveil Pack, reject you, Amelia Voss, as my mate and Luna."

The mark went ice-cold.

Then it burned.

I felt the bond snap like a cord pulled too tight. Felt it sever at the base of my skull and tear through my chest. My wolf screamed—not with sound, but with a howl that filled every corner of my body, a grief so massive it had no name.

My knees buckled.

I didn't fall.

I held Zoe tighter and I stayed on my feet.

The clearing was silent. Three hundred wolves stared.

And deep inside my chest, something that had been buried for thirteen years cracked open and began to rise.
