After My Mate Poisoned My Wolf Chapter 1

The bond snapped at 9:47 on the night of the Autumn Moon, and I felt it before I understood the words.

Grayson's hand was still on my wrist, ceremonial, warm. The pack stood in a wide silver ring around the stone altar. Full moon high. Torch smoke in my throat. He turned to face me, and the smell of him changed — I caught it a half-second before he spoke: another woman's skin layered under his collar, jasmine of a cheap perfume, and something worse, the slick metallic note of a decision already made.

"I, Grayson Hunter, Alpha of Shadowridge Pack, reject you, Sophia Willis, as my mate and Luna."

The mark on my neck went white-cold. Not warm-cold, not slowly — instantly, like someone had pressed the flat of a knife blade against my skin and then pulled it sideways through my chest. My breath caught. A door slammed shut in a room I hadn't known was inside me. The bond didn't break. It emptied. Whatever had been living in that hollow between my ribs for ten years simply wasn't there anymore, and the not-there was louder than any sound the pack could have made.

My knees folded. I caught myself on the altar stone. I heard someone gasp — Nora, our Healer, near the front row, one hand at her mouth.

Megan Carlson stepped out of the crowd.

She had been waiting for it. I could see that now, the way I saw a lot of things in that second — the way her dress fit like it had been tailored a week ago, the way her chin came up in a small rehearsed lift, the way her smile arrived before her feet did. She walked to Grayson's side and slid her hand into his. Her scent was all over him. It had been all over him for months. I had told myself it was the pack laundry.

Grayson looked at me the way you look at a chair you're planning to move.

I put my palm flat on the altar and pushed myself upright.

My legs held. I don't know how. The severed place inside my chest was screaming in a frequency I could feel in my molars, and my vision kept flickering at the edges, but I found my spine and I put it back where it belonged. I looked at him. I did not look at her.

"I, Sophia Willis," I said, and my voice came out clear, carrying, so that every wolf on the lawn heard it, "accept your rejection, Grayson Hunter, Alpha of Shadowridge Pack. I release the bond. I release the title. I release you."

Something in the crowd shifted. A low sound — not approval, not protest. Recognition, maybe. Several of the older wolves dropped their eyes. Declan, our Beta, standing three paces behind Grayson, went very still, and I saw his jaw work once, hard.

I reached up and unclasped the Luna sash from my shoulder.

It was heavier than I remembered. Ten years of ceremonial weight, silver-threaded, still warm from my body. I folded it in half. I folded it again. I set it down on the ceremonial stone, in the exact center, and I let my fingers rest on it for one breath — not tenderly, just precisely, the way you close a ledger you're finished with.

Then I turned and I walked.

Down the altar steps. Across the moonlit grass. Past faces I had spent a decade knowing. Nora reached toward my arm and I stepped around her without slowing. My mark burned so cold it felt wet. My hands were steady. I counted my steps because that was the only way to keep taking them. Forty-two to the gate. Sixty-eight to the gravel path. One hundred and nineteen to the tree line.

At one hundred and twenty, my body gave.

I went down on my knees in the pine needles and I couldn't get back up. The severed bond wasn't pain in the way I'd understood pain before — it was a wrongness at the level of bone, like every cell in my body was trying to remember a shape that didn't exist anymore. I opened my mouth to breathe and nothing came in.

And then something else did.

Something beneath my ribs, in the place the bond had emptied, unfolded.

It was awake. It had, I understood with a terrible clarity, been awake for a long time — pressed down, wrapped in something that tasted, in memory, like the bergamot tea Grayson brought me every morning of our marriage. Every single morning. In his own hands.

My spine cracked. My ribs cracked. My skin split along lines I didn't know were there and something enormous came up through me — fur the color of moonlit bone, muscle I had never carried, a throat that opened and did not make a sound because the sound was too big for sound. I was on four legs. I was twice the size I had been. I could smell the two patrol wolves a hundred meters east, and I felt them drop — I felt their knees hit dirt through the ground itself, without knowing why, without seeing me.

A voice inside my head, female, low, not mine and entirely mine: *Sister. Finally.*

I stood in the dark, shaking, silver, and I understood everything.

The tea.

Ten years of tea.

Behind me, through the trees, I heard Grayson's voice on the altar lawn, easy and public, saying, "— and tonight, I present your new Luna —"
