Chapter 1

At 8:14 p.m., my mother’s ashes hit the floor.

Camilla Bell kicked the moonstone shrine with the heavy toe of her boot. The stone bowl cracked like bone, spilling white powder and gray dust across the polished floorboards of the Ironveil pack house. Four rogue mercenaries stood at her back, their claws out, daring anyone to move.

"Look at her!" Camilla shouted, pointing a manicured finger at my face. Her voice sliced through the memorial silence. "A packless, wolfless omega clinging to an Alpha she seduced! You are a fraud, Kaia. You don’t belong in this house."

I didn’t scream. I fell to my knees, my bare hands sliding into the sharp, broken edges of the moonstone. Jagged rock sliced open my palms. Blood welled, bright crimson, mixing with my mother's gray remains. I frantically scooped the dust toward my chest, ignoring the sting, trying to save what little of Evelyn Duncan was left.

The heavy double doors swung open. Alpha Reed Hudson strode in, his dark coat billowing.

For six years, I had built his pack from dirt into an empire. I had poured my family's wealth into his armory and brewed my mother’s remedies to keep his fighters alive. I looked up at him through my tangled hair, my bloody hands full of ash, waiting for his command to tear Camilla apart.

Reed didn't look at Camilla. He looked down at me.

His jaw tightened. He drew in a breath, and when he spoke, he used his Alpha tone—heavy, suffocating, crushing the breath from my lungs.

"I, Reed Hudson, Alpha of Ironveil, reject you, Kaia Duncan, as my—"

He stopped dead on the final word.

He didn't finish it. He severed only half.

The mate mark on the left side of my neck detonated in cold fire. The searing heat ripped down my spine, then collapsed into a void of freezing numbness—like a iron door slamming shut inside a hollow room. My vision tunneled. I gasped, dropping forward against the floor.

My bloody palms pressed flat against the shattered moonstones.

Deep beneath the agony, something cracked.

It was not my heart. It was a lock.

A presence rose from the marrow of my bones—massive, blindingly bright, and towering. A silver-white wolf, silent and dormant for twenty-four years, opened its eyes inside my head.

*I am here,* a voice rumbled in my chest, primal and deafening. *Rise.*

I didn't shift, but the crushing weight of Reed's Alpha tone shattered off me like thin ice. I stayed down only to hide the silver light flashing through my pupils.

An hour later, I sat on an examination table in the infirmary.

The pack healer was wrapping sterile white gauze around my stitched palms when the door clicked shut. Reed stepped into the room, waving the healer out with a flick of his wrist.

His face transformed instantly. The ruthless Alpha was gone. In his place was the gentle, weary mate who used to bring me tea while I balanced the pack ledgers.

"Kaia," he said softly, rushing forward. He reached out to cradle my face. "God, your hands. I'm so sorry."

I didn't flinch. I sat entirely still.

"I had to do it," he whispered, his eyes wide and earnest. "Camilla brought mercenaries. The pack was terrified. If I didn't appease her, they would have attacked. I stopped before finishing the vow. You felt that, didn't you? It’s just political theater. As soon as I secure the border, I’ll take it back. I did it to protect you."

He leaned down, pressing his forehead against mine.

That was when I smelled it.

Woven under the sterile pine of his soap was a heavy, suffocating scent of sweet jasmine and female musk. It wasn't a passing brush in a hallway. It was baked into the pores of his neck, soaked into his skin from raw, sweat-slick intimacy. He had been in her bed before he walked into my mother’s memorial.

Six years of late meetings, missing funds, and cold glances snapped into focus.

My wolf growled low in my throat, baring phantom teeth. I forced the sound down.

"I understand, Reed," I said quietly, keeping my voice smooth and vacant. "You did what you had to do."

Relief washed over his face. He patted my bandaged shoulder, entirely convinced I was still the naive, wolfless girl who worshipped him. "Rest. We will fix this tomorrow."

He turned and left.

The moment the lock clicked, I stood up. I didn't shed a single tear.

I walked straight to my private quarters, locked the door, and pulled a heavy iron chest from beneath the floorboards. Inside lay the legacy Evelyn Duncan had left behind: rows of sealed medical vials and her leather-bound journals.

My fingers, stiff beneath the bandages, flipped through the final pages. My mother’s cipher was difficult, but the chemical symbols were unmistakable. Blood tests. Micro-doses. Wolfsbane poisoning. The dosages had increased every week for six months, administered through the very vitality tonics Reed insisted on delivering to her bedside every evening.

He hadn't just betrayed me. He had murdered her.

I pulled out a small black radio transceiver hidden in the velvet lining of the box—an encrypted royal frequency my mother had made me memorize as a child.

I powered the unit on. My fingers moved across the keys, inputting the coordinates to Ironveil’s southern supply tunnels—the exact blind spots that bypassed our border patrols.

I typed out a single, cold transmission addressed directly to Lycan Prince Grantham of the Blackthorn Court:

*Southern border route access for a royal forensic team. Deliver the truth of Evelyn Duncan's death, and Ironveil’s gates are yours.*

My silver-white wolf surged against my ribs, pacing, hungry for blood.

*Patience,* I told her. *We burn him completely.*

I slammed the transmit button. The green light flashed twice, confirming delivery.

A second later, the pack-link radio on my desk crackled to life, picking up Reed's voice speaking to his Beta over an unsecured tactical channel:

"Move the trucks to the south gate tonight. Camilla wants the dead healer's garden torched and paved before daybreak."
