Chapter 2

The reply from the Blackthorn Court came at three in the morning.

The tiny green bulb on my transmitter blinked once, then steady. The screen lit up with eight words:

*Coordinates verified. Operatives dispatched. Transmit all primary documentation immediately.*

That was it. No greeting. No acknowledgment of the twenty years since my mother smuggled me out of the royal capital in the dead of night. Grantham was running Blackthorn’s intelligence now, and royals didn't trade in childhood memories.

I preferred it that way. Kindness made people soft.

Sitting in the dim light of my desk lamp, I flexed my bandaged fingers. The stitches in my palms pulled tight and stung, but I ignored them. I reached into the hollow base of my desk and pulled out three encrypted drives.

For six years, Reed had treated me like his personal secretary. He hated paperwork. He wanted the glory of leading hunts and shaking hands with allied Alphas, so he left the ugly, quiet labor to me.

Every supply invoice. Every warrior stipend. Every grain shipment and border toll. I had written them all by hand before logging them into the Ironveil mainframe.

I plugged in the drives and initiated the file transfer. Hundreds of scanned pages flashed across the monitor. Reed thought I had spent six years building his kingdom. He never realized I was keeping an exact inventory of its bones.

Beneath my ribs, my new wolf gave a slow, deliberate stretch. She didn't howl or pace. She simply settled, heavy and watchful, waiting for the trap to spring.

By dawn, the pack house was already buzzing with poison.

Reed’s Beta, Damon Voss, had worked fast. As I walked down the central hall toward the training grounds, the pack’s private mind-link thrummed with coordinated chatter. It leaked out into open whispers the moment I stepped outside into the gray morning mist.

"She doesn't even have a wolf."

"Six years of our Alpha being tied to an Omega."

"Camilla shifted when she was fourteen. That’s what Ironveil needs. A Luna who can fight."

The younger warriors by the sparring ring were the loudest. Wolves like Travis and Cole—boys who had only earned their rank because Reed handed out favors to buy loyalty. They leaned against the wooden fence, smirking as I walked past. They made sure their voices carried.

*Wolfless.*

*Near-Omega.*

*Reed deserves better.*

I didn't turn my head. I didn't speed up, and I didn't slow down. My chin stayed up, my eyes fixed straight ahead. But behind the cold mask of my face, I memorized every smirk, every sneer, and every name.

They thought my silence was shame. They had no idea it was a ledger.

I turned down the stone steps leading to the lower supply rooms and the healer’s wing. Down here, the smell of pine floor cleaner faded, replaced by the faint, comforting scent of dried yarrow and elderberry. My mother’s scent still lingered in the corners, faint and fading.

A shadow shifted by the medicine cabinets.

Petra Wynn stepped out from behind a wooden shelf. She was the oldest she-wolf in Ironveil. Her gray hair was pulled back into a tight knot, and her dark eyes were swollen with red rims. Evelyn had treated Petra’s joint rot for a decade, giving her remedies that let her walk without pain.

Petra didn't say a word about the shattered shrine. She didn't offer empty condolences.

Instead, she took my bandaged hands in her rough, calloused ones and pressed a thick, folded envelope between them.

"Take this," Petra whispered, her voice rough with unshed tears. "Before Damon sends someone down here to clear the shelves."

I unfolded the top sheet. It was a handwritten shipping manifest. Antidote stores—the concentrated wolfsbane antitoxins my mother brewed exclusively for high-ranking pack guards—had been quietly redirected off-pack for eighteen months. Below it were disbursement receipts for warrior training funds, routed into external shell accounts without pack approval.

"We saw the numbers changing," Petra said softly. "The older wolves in the kitchen, the laundry, the clinic. We knew Reed was bleeding us dry for that Silvercrest bitch. But there was no one to bring it to, Kaia. We thought you were trapped."

"I was," I said quietly, folding the paper and sliding it deep into the wool sleeve of my coat. "I'm not anymore."

Petra nodded once, tight and resolute, then turned back to her work without another word.

I turned to head back to my quarters, but heavy boots sounded on the stone floor outside.

Damon Voss stepped into the doorway, blocking my exit.

He was broad-shouldered and smug, leaning against the jamb with his arms crossed. As I approached, he straightened up and pushed his aura forward. It wasn't a true Alpha command—he didn't have the blood for it—but it was heavy, suffocating pressure meant to force an Omega to drop her gaze and bare her throat.

"Going somewhere, Kaia?" he asked, not bothering with my title.

"Excuse me, Damon."

"I'm afraid your access to the records room is cut off," he said, taking a step closer. "Reed issued an administrative hold. Pending a review of the Moon Rite incident last night."

His eyes dropped to my bandaged hands, full of mocking pity.

I stopped two feet from him. I didn't flinch. I didn't drop my chin an inch.

"If Reed wants me locked out of the records," I said, keeping my voice dead even, "he can write the order himself. Signed and stamped with the pack seal."

Damon’s sneer vanished. His jaw ticked.

He didn't have a signed order. Reed was too paranoid to put his signature on anything that could tie him to internal pack theft.

"I'm his Beta," Damon snarled, stepping into my personal space. He poured on his full physical presence, trying to crowd me against the stone wall. "My word is the Alpha's word. Hand over your master keys."

In the back of my skull, the silver-white wolf rose.

She didn't push to the surface, but her raw, terrifying power bled into my blood. The borrowed pressure of Damon's aura hit me and shattered like dry leaves against a brick wall. It didn't even make my knees tremble.

I looked directly into his eyes, my pupils expanding with cold, silent defiance.

"Bring me the signed paper, Damon," I said softly. "Or get out of my way."

Damon froze. For half a second, the blood drained from his cheeks. His wolf smelled something on the air that his eyes couldn't see, and his instincts screamed at him to retreat.

He swallowed hard, stepped to the side, and let me walk past into the cold corridor.
