After My Mate Offered Me to a Rogue Alpha Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday morning.

I felt it the moment Ethan opened his mouth on the ceremonial platform. The mark on my neck—the one that had pulsed warm for three years—went ice-cold so fast I thought I'd been burned. My knees wanted to buckle. I locked them.

"I, Ethan, Alpha of Shadowvale, reject you, Sophia, as my mate and Luna."

Three hundred wolves watched. The words hit like a physical blow—not metaphorical, not dramatic, actual impact—my ribcage compressed and my vision whited at the edges. Through the dying bond, I felt something worse than pain: his arousal. Sharp and unmistakable. For her.

Natasha stepped forward before the murmur in the crowd could build. Ethan's hand found the small of her back, proprietary and easy, like he'd been practicing. Maybe he had.

"My true mate," he said, loud enough for the back rows.

My wolf screamed inside me. No sound came out—she'd never had a voice, three years of silence, three years of everyone calling me wolfless—but the pressure in my chest was new. Like something trying to crack through bone.

I made myself stand straight. The pack officiator held out the Luna Accord dissolution document, cream parchment on a silver tray. My hands didn't shake when I took the ceremonial blade. I pressed it to my thumb, watched the blood well up dark and fast, and signed my name across the bottom in one smooth line.

No words. Not to Ethan. Not to Natasha, who was smiling at the crowd like she'd won something.

I set the blade back on the tray, turned, and walked.

The rain hit my face the second I stepped outside. Cold, Oregon spring rain that soaked through my ceremony dress in under a minute. I kept walking. The pack house doors closed behind me with a soft, final click.

For two hours, I thought I was free.

—

They caught me at the border just before dawn.

I'd packed light—my grandmother's journals in their oilskin pouch, two changes of clothes, the emergency cash I'd been saving in a jar under the floorboards. I was ten feet from the tree line when I smelled them: enforcers, three of them, flanking.

"Luna." The lead one—Garrett, I'd healed his shoulder last spring—didn't meet my eyes. "Alpha wants you back at the house."

"I'm not Luna anymore." My voice came out steady. "You saw me sign."

"There's a clause." He shifted his weight. Uncomfortable. "Blood-clause in the original Accord. You're bound to Shadowvale until the next blood moon."

Six weeks.

My wolf snarled silently. The pressure in my chest spiked—something trying to surface, something I didn't have access to.

"Ethan invoked it an hour ago," Garrett continued. "You're to report to the pack house. Omega rank. Reassignment."

Omega.

I looked at the tree line. Ten feet. I could run. They'd catch me in under a minute, and then it wouldn't be an escort, it would be a hunt.

I turned around.

—

The servants' wing smelled like lye soap and old wood. They gave me a cot in a room with two other Omegas who didn't look at me when I walked in. One of them—a girl named Iris—slid a folded piece of paper across the floor with her foot.

I picked it up.

Natasha's handwriting. Neat, looping letters.

*Daily duties: Luna suite (floors, windows, linens). Healer workspace (inventory, cleaning). Personal laundry. Meals delivered to quarters by 7 AM, 12 PM, 6 PM. Report to Luna directly for additional tasks.*

Luna. She was already using the title.

I folded the paper once, tucked it in my pocket, and lay down on the cot with my grandmother's journals under my head. The oilskin crinkled. I pressed my thumb to the inside of my opposite wrist and breathed.

Six weeks.

—

The first morning, I scrubbed Natasha's floors on my knees.

She was getting dressed when I arrived—my former suite, my former closet, my former life repackaged in her aesthetic. She didn't acknowledge me for the first ten minutes. Just moved around the room in a silk robe, humming.

Then she started talking.

"It's such an unfortunate situation." Her voice carried to the open door, where two warriors were stationed in the corridor. Deliberate. "A wolfless Luna. I mean, we all hoped, didn't we? That maybe she'd awaken eventually."

I kept scrubbing.

"But three years." A pause. The sound of a drawer closing. "At some point, you have to accept reality. Ethan tried. He really did. But a pack needs strength."

My knuckles were white on the rag.

"I'm just glad he finally found his true mate." She stepped past me to the mirror, close enough that I smelled her perfume—something floral and cloying, nothing like the cedar and moonflower my grandmother's compounds left on my skin. "The Moon Goddess works in mysterious ways."

She left the room. The warriors followed.

I finished the floor. Then I stood, slowly, and walked to her healer workspace.

Three shelves of compound jars. Labels in her handwriting. I didn't touch anything. I just leaned close and breathed.

Cedarwood base. Yarrow extract. Wolfsbane antidote—my grandmother's formula, the one I'd shared with Natasha when we were young and I'd still thought friendship was real.

One jar, second shelf: the ratio was wrong. Yarrow to cedarwood, 2:1 instead of 3:1. A substitution error. Functional, but imprecise. Anyone trained properly would've caught it.

Natasha hadn't.

I pulled the small log from my pocket—the one I'd been keeping for over a year, hidden in the lining of my old Luna jacket—and added a new entry. Date. Formula. Error.

Then I added one more line:

*Trace wolfsbane detected in Mother's meal, 3/18. Antidote batch hidden, servants' wing, cleaning supply closet, third shelf, green bottle.*

I closed the log. Tucked it back in my pocket.

Six weeks.

I could last six weeks.

—

That night, I sat on my cot with my grandmother's journals open on my lap. The oilskin pouch smelled like cedar—decades of compound preparation soaked into the fabric. I turned to the wolfsbane antidote page, the one my mother had taught me when I was sixteen.

Natasha's version, the one on her shelf, was close. But not exact.

My mother would've noticed. She'd been a healer for forty years. She knew these formulas by heart.

Unless her heart was forgetting.

I thought about the way her sentences had started trailing off in recent months. The way she'd looked at me last week with confusion in her eyes, like she'd lost the thread of what she was saying mid-thought.

I thought about the faint, bitter undertone in her last meal.

My wolf surged—silent, voiceless, furious.

I pressed my thumb to my wrist until the pressure eased.

Then I opened the log again and wrote one more line:

*Natasha is poisoning her.*

I didn't allow myself grief. I allowed myself the next step.

Six weeks until the blood moon.

I could do a lot in six weeks.
