Chapter 2

I learned to lower my eyes the morning after the banquet.

It was not difficult. I had practiced submission for years, performed it at pack gatherings and formal ceremonies. But this was different. This was not the careful diplomacy of a Luna managing pack politics. This was the absolute erasure of self that Jensen had been working toward since the first time he brought Poppy into our home.

I gave it to him.

When he summoned me to his office three days after the banquet, I walked in with my head bowed and my hands folded. He was seated behind his desk, reviewing patrol reports. He did not look up immediately. I waited.

"You understand why discipline was necessary," he said finally. His tone was almost conversational, like we were discussing weather.

"Yes, Alpha."

He glanced up then, studying my face. I kept my expression soft and empty. After a long moment, he nodded.

"Good. You may resume limited movement within pack territory. You will visit your father during healer hours only. You will not engage with ranked wolves without my permission. You will not leave pack grounds."

"Thank you, Alpha."

He waved his hand in dismissal. I turned and walked out. My heart was steady. Sera was silent inside me, but I felt her attention now, sharp and waiting. She was not gone. She was listening.

The first time I visited my father after being granted movement, Maren was changing the dressing on his spine. The healer's quarters smelled like medicinal herbs and clean linen. My father sat on the edge of the treatment bed, his shoulders slightly hunched. He looked older than I remembered.

Maren glanced at me when I entered, then returned her focus to her work. She did not speak. She had learned, over the past months, that silence was safer.

I sat in the chair beside the bed and watched Maren's hands move with practiced efficiency. My father's injury required daily attention. The rogue attack had damaged something deep in his spine that his wolf could not fully heal. Without Maren's treatments, he would lose mobility within weeks. Without the Shadowridge healer's specialized knowledge, he would lose it permanently.

Jensen knew this. He had always known this.

Maren finished the dressing and stepped back. "I'll return in the evening for the second treatment," she said quietly. She left the room without meeting my eyes.

My father and I sat in silence for a moment. Then he reached out and gripped my hand. His grip was still strong.

"You're planning something," he said. It was not a question.

I looked at him. His eyes were steady. He had been a Beta for twenty years before the attack. He knew how to read wolves. He knew how to read me.

I did not answer directly. "How long between Maren's evening treatment and the night shift change?"

He blinked once. Then understanding settled across his face. "Two hours. The night healer arrives at eight."

"And the southern border patrol?"

"Rotates every six hours. The gap is widest between midnight and two in the morning. It always has been."

I nodded slowly. My father had taught me Shadowridge's security patterns when I was thirteen, back when he still believed I might need to defend the pack someday. He had been right. I did need them. Just not in the way he had imagined.

He squeezed my hand harder. "Adelynn."

I met his eyes.

"Don't stay because of me," he said. His voice was rough. "Don't do that."

I pressed my other hand over his. "I'm not."

It was the truth. I was not staying. I was preparing.

Over the next week, I visited my father every day during permitted healer hours. I memorized the rhythm of the healer's quarters. Maren's shift ended at six. The night healer, an older wolf named Garrett, arrived at eight. The two-hour gap was consistent. I noted which warriors passed through the corridors during those hours, which routes they took, how often they glanced into the healer's wing.

I walked the paths between the Omega house and the healer's quarters at different times of day, counting steps, noting sight lines. I retraced routes I had known since childhood, the ones my father had shown me during training exercises. The southern border had always been Shadowridge's weakest point. The terrain was rocky and difficult to patrol on foot. Warriors relied on scent markers and scheduled sweeps. Between midnight and two, there was a gap. Forty minutes where the patrol rotation left a blind spot near the old creek bed.

I had not forgotten.

I stored it all in careful mental sequence. I did not write anything down. I did not risk a single physical record.

And through it all, I kept my eyes lowered and my voice soft.

Poppy's mind-link messages began arriving on the fourth day.

*He called me beautiful this morning. In the Luna suite. Your suite. He said I make him feel alive again.*

I was folding laundry in the Omega house when the first one came through. I paused, my hands still on the fabric, and felt the familiar pull of the mind-link connection. Poppy's voice in my head was light and amused, like she was sharing a pleasant secret.

I did not respond.

The second message came that evening.

*I wore your ceremonial garments today. The white ones with the silver embroidery. They fit perfectly. The pack members saw me in the hall. They smiled.*

I set down the book I had been pretending to read and stared at the wall. Sera stirred faintly inside me, a low growl building in her chest. I pressed my hand to my sternum and breathed slowly until she quieted.

I did not respond.

The messages continued. Every day, sometimes twice a day. Poppy described Jensen's affections in careful detail. She told me about pack members who had stopped asking where I was. She told me about the Luna's office, which she had begun using for her own correspondence. She told me about the upcoming council meeting, where Jensen planned to introduce her formally as his chosen mate.

Her tone was never angry. It was satisfied. Precise. The tone of someone who believed the contest was over and she had won.

I recorded every single message.

I did not know yet how I would use them. But I knew I would. And I knew Poppy had no idea she was handing me the evidence I needed.

On the seventh day, I sat in the Omega house after my father's evening visit and pulled out the small notebook I had hidden beneath the floorboards. I opened it to the first page and reviewed the list I had started the night of the banquet.

Names. Resources. Steps.

I added three new lines.

Then I closed the notebook and slid it back into its hiding place.

Sera's voice finally broke the silence inside me. It was faint, but it was there.

*We're leaving,* she whispered.

*Yes,* I thought back. *We are.*
