Chapter 3

Jensen's hand gripped my elbow as we walked into the neutral-territory gathering hall. His touch was firm, proprietary. A reminder. I was here as a prop—the image of an intact Alpha pair for the assembled wolves to see.

The Pack Alliance gathering was held twice a year in neutral territory, a grand stone hall that belonged to no single pack. Alphas came with their ranked wolves to discuss border disputes, trade agreements, and alliance politics. It was theater as much as governance. Everyone performed strength. Everyone watched everyone else.

I wore a pale blue gown Jensen had selected that morning. My hair was pinned back. The mark on my neck was visible. I kept my expression pleasant and my posture straight. I had done this before.

Jensen released my arm once we were inside and moved toward a cluster of Alphas near the center of the room. I drifted toward the edge, where the Lunas and ranked she-wolves gathered in smaller groups. I exchanged polite greetings. I smiled at appropriate moments. I did not say anything that mattered.

Sera was quiet inside me, a faint presence I had grown used to. She had spoken only once since the banquet, that single whispered confirmation the night I began my list. Since then, silence.

I was midway through a conversation with a Luna from the eastern territories when the scent hit me.

Cedar and winter rain. Clean and cold and impossibly grounding.

I stopped mid-sentence. My breath caught. The Luna I had been speaking to paused, her expression shifting to mild concern. I murmured something—an excuse, I don't remember what—and turned.

Across the hall, a man stood near the far entrance. Tall. Dark hair. His presence was different from the Alphas around him. Not louder. Steadier. He wore simple formal attire, no pack insignia, but the wolves near him had shifted subtly to create space. Deference without submission.

He turned his head and looked directly at me.

The scent intensified. My wolf stirred.

Sera's voice broke the silence inside my mind for the first time in weeks. It was barely above a whisper, fragile and stunned.

*Mate.*

I froze. My fingers tightened on the glass I was holding. The Luna beside me was still speaking, but I could not hear her words. Everything had narrowed to the man across the hall and the impossible scent that wrapped around me like a second skin.

His eyes stayed on mine for a long moment. Then his gaze dropped to my neck. To the mark. I saw the exact moment he understood.

He did not look away. He did not flinch. His expression remained calm, unreadable. Then he turned and walked toward a small group of wolves near the refreshment table, his movements unhurried.

I forced myself to breathe. I set down my glass before my hands could shake visibly. The Luna beside me touched my arm lightly.

"Are you all right, Luna Adelynn?"

"Yes," I said. My voice was steady. "Just a bit warm. I think I'll step outside for air."

She nodded sympathetically. I walked toward the terrace doors, keeping my pace measured. I did not look back at the man. I did not need to. His scent lingered in my senses like an echo I could not shake.

The terrace was empty. I gripped the stone railing and stared out at the darkening forest beyond the hall. My heart was pounding. Sera was no longer silent. She was pacing inside me, restless and confused and awake in a way she had not been for months.

*Mate,* she repeated. *He's our mate.*

*We already have a mate,* I thought back.

Sera growled softly. *That bond is dead. You know it is. This is different. This is real.*

I pressed my fingers to the mark on my neck. It was still there. Still visible. Still binding me to Jensen in every way that mattered legally and politically.

But Sera was right. The bond with Jensen had died the night of the banquet. What remained was obligation and leverage, not connection. The Moon Goddess did not make mistakes, but she also did not leave her wolves without mercy.

A second-chance mate.

I had heard of them. Rare. Given only when the first bond was broken beyond repair. I had never imagined I would be granted one.

I stayed on the terrace until my breathing steadied. Then I returned to the hall.

The man was gone from where I had seen him last. I did not search for him. I rejoined the Luna I had been speaking with and resumed the conversation as if nothing had happened. I performed flawlessly.

Later that evening, as the gathering began to wind down, a she-wolf I vaguely recognized approached me. She was older, her rank unclear, her manner polite and unremarkable.

"Luna Adelynn," she said quietly. "A mutual acquaintance asked me to pass along a message. He said if you ever need secure communication outside your pack's network, there is a way. He will leave instructions at the neutral registry under the name Westbrook."

She handed me a small folded card, nodded once, and walked away before I could respond.

I slipped the card into my sleeve and did not open it until I was back in the Omega house hours later, alone.

Inside was a single line of text: a frequency code for a mind-link channel that bypassed pack networks entirely. Untraceable. Secure.

I stared at it for a long time.

Then I memorized the code and burned the card.

Three days later, I used it.

The connection opened smoothly, no static or interference. I did not speak immediately. Neither did he.

Then his voice came through, low and steady. "My name is Miles Silvercrest. You don't have to tell me yours. I already know."

I closed my eyes. "You're Lycan."

"Yes."

"You felt it too. At the gathering."

"Yes."

Silence. Then I asked the question that mattered. "Why are you helping me?"

His answer was immediate. "Because the Moon Goddess does not grant second-chance mates lightly. And because no one should be chained to a bond that has already died."

I sat with that for a moment. Then I asked, "What do you need to know?"

"Everything," he said. "Start with your father."
