Chapter 4

I waited until the house went quiet. Until the last footsteps faded from the hallway above and the perimeter wolves changed shift. Then I knelt beside the cot and pried up the floorboard.

The box was warm. Still warm, like it had been sitting in sunlight even though it had been buried in darkness for days. I lifted it out and set it on the thin blanket. My hands were steady. That surprised me.

The wax seal on the lid was dark red. Old. It cracked cleanly when I pressed my thumb against it, breaking into pieces that fell onto the blanket like dried blood. The lid opened without resistance.

Inside, two things. A folded sheet of aged vellum, thick and official-looking, with text I couldn't read from this angle. And beneath it, a letter in my mother's handwriting.

I picked up the letter first. My throat tightened. I hadn't seen her writing in years. Hadn't let myself look at the few things I'd kept because it hurt too much. Now I unfolded it slowly and read.

*Adelaide,*

*If you're reading this, Desmond has done what I knew he would. I'm sorry I couldn't stop it. I could only prepare for it.*

*You are the daughter of a Lycan Princess. My bloodline runs in you—dormant, but not gone. It requires extreme trauma to surface. I wish that weren't true. I wish I could have spared you the cost. But the Moon Goddess does not build queens in comfort.*

*The document beneath this letter is a Luna Accord. Desmond signed it seven years ago, in his own blood, the night before your mating ceremony. He doesn't remember. I made sure of that. The Accord is simple: if he severs the mate bond, all Alpha authority transfers to you. Irrevocably. Immediately. He signed his own trap.*

*Winnie Cooper has the evidence you'll need. She's been waiting for you.*

*You were never the one who needed saving. I just needed to make sure you survived long enough to remember that.*

*—Raya*

I read it twice. Then I set it down and reached into my pocket. Pulled out the dried lavender sachet. Pressed it between my palms until I could feel the petals crumble slightly. My mother's scent. Faint. Still there.

I held it until my hands stopped shaking.

Then I picked up the vellum.

The Luna Accord was written in formal pack-legal language—the kind I'd read a hundred times in alliance contracts. But this one was different. Binding clauses. Blood-signature authentication. Witness marks from two Council-ranked wolves whose names I recognized. And at the bottom, Desmond's signature. Dark. Unmistakable. Dated seven years ago.

I read every word. Every clause. Every subsection. The mechanism was elegant. Brutal. If the Alpha severs the mate bond—by rejection, abandonment, or death—all authority transfers immediately to the Luna. No tribunal required. No pack vote. The bond itself is the trigger. The blood-signature makes it irrevocable.

Desmond had signed away his title the night before he claimed it.

I sat on the cot with the Accord in my lap and felt something shift in my chest. Not my wolf. Deeper than that. The pressure at the base of my spine pulsed once, steady and certain.

I wasn't just surviving anymore.

I was armed.

Winnie's archive room was tucked behind the financial records annex—a space so boring that Desmond's administration had never thought to inspect it. I arrived at midnight. Winnie was already there, standing beside a table covered in files.

She didn't waste time. Just gestured to the documents spread across the surface.

"Seven years," she said. Her voice was calm. Even. "Every transaction."

I stepped closer. The files were organized by date. Pack funds redirected to fabricate identity papers. Payments to forgers, traceable through three shell accounts. Transfers to Cassandra's personal holdings disguised as alliance operational expenses. Every transaction timestamped. Every signature cross-referenced.

I picked up the first file. Read the date. Two months after Desmond and I mated.

"He started planning this early," I said.

Winnie nodded. "Your mother told me to watch. So I did."

I looked at her. Really looked at her. She'd spent seven years building this case in silence. Waiting for a moment she couldn't be sure would come.

"Why?" I asked.

Her expression didn't change. "Because Raya asked me to. And because I've watched you hold this pack together while Desmond took credit. Someone had to keep the receipts."

I set the file down. Looked at the evidence spread across the table. Felt the ground become solid beneath my feet for the first time since the banquet.

"Who is the Shadowmere Pack's current Beta?" I asked.

Winnie's smile was dry. Small. "Ethan Mors. I made contact two years ago. He's willing to testify."

I nodded slowly. "Then we have everything."

"Almost," Winnie said. "We need a venue. A tribunal where the evidence can be entered formally."

"It's coming," I said. I didn't explain. I didn't need to. Winnie just looked at me and nodded once.

I left the archive room with the Luna Accord folded inside my shirt and Winnie's documentation memorized.

The Nightridge renegotiation was scheduled for ten a.m. the next morning. I arrived early with the refreshment tray and set it on the side table. Cassandra swept in at 10:04, wearing whites that were almost but not quite the right shade. Alpha Roland Vane sat at the head of the table with his delegation—three wolves I'd negotiated with personally during the original alliance talks.

Roland's scent shifted the moment Cassandra opened her mouth. Confusion. Then something sharper.

She started with pleasantries. He cut her off.

"The grain clause," he said. His voice was flat. "Section four. We need clarification on the seasonal allocation."

Cassandra blinked. "Of course. We're happy to discuss that."

"We're not discussing," Roland said. "We're renegotiating. The terms as written don't account for the border pack expansion your Alpha promised during the original talks."

Cassandra's smile faltered. "I'm sure we can adjust—"

"Can you?" Roland leaned forward. "Because the wolf who negotiated this agreement understood the balance required. I'm not seeing that understanding now."

Cassandra's scent spiked. Panic, barely masked. She looked at the file in front of her like it was written in a language she didn't speak.

Roland stood. His delegation followed. "This was a waste of time."

Desmond's voice cut across the room. "Wait."

He was standing in the doorway. His face was tight. Furious. He looked at Cassandra. Then at Roland. Then at me.

"Adelaide," he said. His voice dropped into Alpha tone. Command. "Fix this."

The room went silent.

I set down the refreshment tray. Walked to the head of the table. Pulled out the chair Cassandra was sitting in and waited until she moved. Then I sat down and looked at Roland.

"The border pack expansion clause is in section six, subsection three," I said. My voice was calm. Even. "It's conditional on Ironvale maintaining a fifteen percent grain reserve during winter months. You're requesting an increase that would violate that threshold. But if we adjust the timber-trade ratio in section eight and extend the hunting-rights agreement by two seasons, we can meet your grain needs without compromising either pack's reserves."

Roland sat back down. Slowly. His scent shifted. Recognition.

I pulled the alliance file toward me and flipped to the correct page. "Additionally, I'm proposing a new clause: shared healer training between our packs. Ironvale has winterroot cultivation expertise. Nightridge has mountain herb access we need. It's a resource exchange that benefits both sides and strengthens the alliance long-term."

Roland's mouth curved slightly. Not quite a smile. "That's acceptable."

I wrote the amendment by hand. Pushed it across the table. Roland read it, nodded, and signed.

He stood and extended his hand. I shook it.

"I hope to negotiate with you again," he said. His tone was pointed. Deliberate.

I met his eyes. "Anytime."

Roland and his delegation left. The door closed behind them. I stood and turned toward Desmond.

He was staring at me. His jaw tight. His scent unreadable.

He didn't say thank you.

He didn't say anything.

I picked up the refreshment tray and walked out.

That night, I sat on the cot in my Omega quarters and pressed my hand against the place where the Luna Accord was hidden. The pressure at the base of my spine coiled tighter.

I wasn't just armed anymore.

I was ready.
