Chapter 5

The Harrow family Thanksgiving gathering was held at the estate I used to prepare for. The one with the long dining hall and the garden where I'd planted rosemary along the stone path because Desmond's father liked the smell. I arrived through the service entrance with the other Omegas, carrying trays of glazed root vegetables and braised meats I hadn't been allowed to cook.

Georgina swept past me in the hallway without looking. Her dress was cream silk. Her hair was perfect. She smelled like expensive perfume and satisfaction.

I kept my head down and moved through the crowd. Served wine to wolves who used to call me Luna. Refilled water glasses at a table I used to sit at. No one met my eyes. That was fine. I didn't need them to.

The study door was cracked open when I passed it. Just slightly. Enough that the voices inside carried into the hallway if you were close enough and quiet enough and had a wolf's hearing even if that wolf was weakened and dormant.

I stopped. Set the tray on the side table. Adjusted the napkins like I was straightening them.

"—filed before the next full moon," Desmond was saying. His voice was low. Certain. "Once she's formally classified as rogue, she has no legal standing. The pups stay. She disappears."

Georgina's voice was calm. Pleased. "And the registry erasure?"

"Already drafted. Winnie's office will process it as routine administrative cleanup. By the time anyone notices, it'll be done."

"What about parental claim?" Georgina asked. "She could contest."

"Not if she's wolfless and rogue." Desmond's tone was dismissive. "Pack law is clear. Unfit parents lose custody automatically. No tribunal required."

Silence. Then Georgina again, satisfied: "Good. The boys deserve better than a defective mother."

My hands gripped the edge of the tray. The metal bent slightly under my fingers. I didn't drop it. I stood there for exactly four seconds. Counted them. Then I picked up the tray and walked back into the dining hall.

I served dessert. Cleared plates. Smiled when Cassandra asked for more wine. My face was composed. My hands were steady.

Inside, the pressure at the base of my spine coiled so tight I thought my bones would crack.

The next morning, I walked into the pack's administrative building before dawn. The clerk at the front desk looked up, startled. Omegas didn't usually come through the main entrance.

I set a folded document on the counter. "I'm invoking my right to a Pack Tribunal before the Lycan Council."

The clerk blinked. "You're—"

"Still legally ranked until registry erasure is formalized," I said. My voice was calm. Even. "Which means I retain the right to petition. The invocation is written in accordance with Ironvale's founding charter, section twelve, subsection four. It's valid."

I'd memorized that section during my second year as Luna. Filed it away with everything else I thought I'd never need.

The clerk picked up the document. Read it. Her scent shifted. Uncertainty.

"This has to go to the Council," she said slowly.

"I know. That's why I'm filing it now."

She looked at me for a long moment. Then she stamped the document and logged it into the system. "You'll receive a tribunal date within two weeks."

"Thank you," I said.

I walked out before Desmond's administration could intercept it.

By the time Desmond found out, the Council had already set the date. Fourteen days. He came to my quarters that evening, his face tight and furious.

"You can't do this," he said.

I looked up from the cot. "I already did."

"You have no grounds. No standing. You're—"

"Still legally your mate until the bond is formally dissolved," I said. "Which means I have standing. The Council agrees."

His jaw worked. "This is pointless. You'll lose."

"Maybe," I said. "But I'll lose in front of the Lycan Council. Publicly. With every Alpha in the region watching."

His scent spiked. Fury. And underneath it, something sharper. Fear.

He turned and left without another word.

Georgina called it desperate flailing from a wolfless Omega. Cassandra's smile, for the first time since the banquet, didn't reach her eyes.

Two days later, Desmond filed a petition with the pack's Omega council. Formal classification of Adelaide Voss as unfit parent on grounds of wolfless status. If it passed before the tribunal, my parental claim would be gone before I ever stood before the Council.

Winnie found me in the laundry room that afternoon. She didn't say anything. Just handed me a folded piece of paper.

I opened it. The petition. Logged with three technical defects that would require re-submission. Eleven days bought.

I looked at her. "Thank you."

Her expression didn't change. "Your mother told me to watch. I'm still watching."

The next supervised visit with the twins was in the garden. The same stone bench. The same roses. Georgina stood ten feet away with a Delta. Watching.

I knelt in front of Maddox and Dawson and cupped their faces.

"Something's going to happen soon," I said quietly. "You might be asked to stand in a big room. There will be a lot of people. They might ask you questions."

Maddox's eyes were serious. "What kind of questions?"

"About what your wolf feels. About who you trust." I smoothed his hair back. "You just tell the truth. Whatever your wolf knows. That's all."

Dawson leaned into my hand. "Will you be there?"

"Yes."

"Then it's okay," he said simply.

Maddox nodded. "My wolf already knows, Mama."

I kissed their foreheads. Held them until Georgina cleared her throat and the Delta stepped forward.

I watched them walk away. Maddox looked back once. His eyes were steady.

That night, I sat on the cot and pulled up the floorboard. The Luna Accord was still there. Still warm. I pressed my hand against it and felt the pressure at the base of my spine pulse once.

Not yet.

But soon.

The morning of the tribunal, I woke before dawn. Dressed in the plainest clothes I had—gray, simple, nothing that would draw attention. I braided my hair back and looked at myself in the cracked mirror above the basin.

No mark on my neck. No Luna whites. No wolf.

Just me.

I folded the Luna Accord into my shirt. Felt it rest against my ribs. Then I walked out of the Omega quarters and toward the Council chamber.

The hall was already full when I arrived. Alphas from neighboring packs. Council members in formal robes. Desmond at the front with Cassandra beside him, both of them dressed in ceremonial pack regalia. Georgina sat in the second row, her face composed and cold.

I walked down the center aisle alone. Every head turned. I felt their eyes. Their judgment. Their certainty that this was a waste of time.

I reached the petitioner's platform and climbed the three steps. Stood before the Lycan Council's bench. Five judges. The center seat was empty.

The head judge looked down at me. His expression was neutral. "State your petition."

I opened my mouth to speak.

The chamber doors opened.

Footsteps. Slow. Deliberate. Every wolf in the room turned.

A man walked down the aisle. Tall. Dark-haired. His presence filled the space like pressure before a storm. He wore no ceremonial robes. Didn't need them. His scent hit the room first—Lycan-royal, undeniable, ancient.

The Lycan King.

He walked to the center bench and sat in the empty chair. Looked directly at me.

And inhaled.

His eyes widened. Just slightly. Just enough.

The head judge stood. "Your Majesty. We weren't expecting—"

"I'm here now," Kieran Blackwell said. His voice was quiet. Final. He didn't look away from me. "Proceed."

I felt the pressure at the base of my spine crack open.

Desmond's scent spiked. Confusion. Then fear.

I pulled the Luna Accord from my shirt. Unfolded it. Held it up.

"I'm here," I said, "to claim what was always mine."

The chamber went silent.

Then my bones began to break.
