After My Mate Let His Mistress Destroy Our Baby Chapter 1

The bond went wrong at 9:47 on the night I was supposed to be crowned his Luna.

I was halfway down the east corridor of the pack house, ceremonial gown gathered in one hand, when Oliver's scent hit me — pine smoke and iron blood, the smell I had known since I was fourteen — and something under it that did not belong. Rosewater. Warm skin. A she-wolf's arousal, thick and unmistakable, layered over him like a second coat.

My stomach dropped before my mind caught up.

I followed the scent past the dressing chamber. Past the alcove where his ceremonial jacket should have been laid out. To a side room at the end of the hall with the door pulled almost shut. Almost. Not quite.

Blaire's voice came through the crack, low and satisfied. "They're already gathering. You should hurry."

And Oliver — my Oliver, the boy who once bit through a rogue's throat to keep me breathing — answered with a sound I had heard a thousand times in the dark, a rough hum that used to be mine.

I pressed my fingertips to the inside of my wrist. Three heartbeats. That was the trick I had used as a child when the rogues came close. Count three. Move on the fourth.

On the fourth, I pushed the door open.

They were tangled on the low couch by the window, half-dressed, Blaire's hair spilling loose over Oliver's shoulder. Her eyes found mine first. She did not startle. She smiled — slow, deliberate, patient as a knife being drawn — and the fresh bite on her neck caught the lamplight.

A Luna mark. Already given.

Oliver turned his head. He saw me. And he went still.

He did not reach for me. He did not speak. He did not even have the decency to look away.

The mate bond opened between us like a door onto an empty room, and what came through was not shame, not shock, not even guilt. It was indifference. Cool, complete, arriving in my chest as a physical fact. My mark — the phantom place on my shoulder where his bite should have gone tonight — went cold. Not warm-cold. Not sore-cold. Empty-cold, the way a hearth feels three days after the fire dies.

I did not scream. I did not cry. I stood in the doorway with my ceremonial gown crushed in my hand and watched the man I had built an empire for pick his jacket off the floor.

"Oliver." My voice came out level. I was proud of that.

He did not answer me. He walked past me — close enough that his sleeve brushed mine, close enough that I smelled her on his skin — and he kept walking. Out of the room. Down the corridor. Toward the ceremonial platform where every allied Alpha on the Eastern Seaboard was already waiting.

Blaire rose from the couch unhurried, adjusting the neckline of her dress so the mark showed clean.

"You should follow," she said. "You won't want to miss it."

I followed.

The torches on the ceremonial grounds had been lit an hour ago. I had lit half of them myself. Two hundred wolves stood in the circle — Alphas I had negotiated treaties with, Betas whose warriors I had healed, Lunas whose babies I had delivered. Oliver stepped onto the raised stone at the center and the crowd went quiet the way a forest does before something dies.

He did not look for me. He looked past me, at the moon.

"I, Oliver, Alpha of the Ironveil Pack —" his voice carried the way an Alpha's is trained to "— declare this female insufficient as my Luna."

He extended his hand toward the shadows at the edge of the platform. Blaire walked into the torchlight.

The bond detonated.

It was not pain the way a wound is pain. It was pain the way a bone being pulled out through the skin is pain. My mark burned, and then it burned cold, and then something in my chest tore open along a seam I had not known was there. My knees gave. The stone came up fast. Somewhere very far away I heard a Luna gasp and an Alpha swear.

I did not black out. I wanted to. My body refused me even that.

I pressed my fingertips to my wrist. One. Two. Three.

On four, I got my palms under me. On five, my knees. On six, I was standing, ceremonial gown filthy at the hem, hair loose across my face, and I lifted my head and I found Oliver's eyes across the burning circle.

Every Alpha in that ring was watching me.

"I will not be confined," I said. My voice did not shake. I made sure of it. "Whatever you do next, Oliver — remember I built every alliance in this room."

A muscle jumped in his jaw. For one heartbeat I saw the boy from the rogue fringes flicker behind the Alpha's face. Then it was gone.

"Cedric." His voice was flat. "Escort her to the Omega quarters."

Cedric Voss, Beta of Ironveil, the man who had stood beside me at every treaty table for four years, stepped out of the front rank. He would not look at me. His hands, when they closed around my upper arms, were gentle. Almost apologetic.

"Walk with me, Luna," he murmured — the old title, the wrong title, spoken so low only I could hear — and he turned me away from the platform.

Behind me, Oliver was already lowering his mouth to Blaire's neck to renew the mark in front of the crowd.

The Omega quarters were beneath the pack house, stone-walled, cold. Cedric fitted the silver-lined restraints around my wrists himself, as slowly as he dared. He did not speak. When the cuff clicked shut, I felt the burn start immediately — a low, chewing heat that would leave scars.

"Cedric," I said quietly.

He paused at the door.

"Whatever she asked him for tonight," I said, "she will ask him for more tomorrow. Watch her."

He held very still. Then he nodded — one small motion, meant for no one but me — and closed the door.

The lock turned.

Above me, the ceremony went on. I could hear the drums start up through the stone. Every beat came through the bond as well, carrying Oliver's satisfaction and Blaire's triumph into my body like a blade sliding in and out of the same wound.

I sat down against the wall. I pressed my fingertips to my wrist under the silver cuff. I counted.

On three, deep in my chest, in a place I had never felt before, something answered.

Not a voice. Not yet. A vibration. Low. Furious. A growl I could not make with my throat, waiting behind my ribs like a wolf pacing a locked door.

Upstairs, Blaire laughed.

The thing inside my chest bared its teeth.
