Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 PM on a full-moon night, in a forest clearing soaked with my blood.

I knew the exact moment because I was staring at the moon when Alistair spoke the words. My leg was shattered. The rogue's jaws had crushed the bone clean through, and I'd dragged myself toward the rock outcropping with my hands, leaving a red trail in the dirt. The grey Omega shift I'd worn for three years was soaked through. I couldn't shift. My wolf was too weak from the bond-abuse, from three years of Alpha-tone commands that had locked her down until she barely stirred anymore.

But she stirred now. She pushed one word through the mate bond, the connection I'd spent three years trying not to feel: *Mine. Help me.*

Nothing came back. Just silence, cold and hollow.

Then I heard his footsteps.

Alistair's scent hit me first—dark cedar and iron, the scent that used to make my wolf purr, now just a reminder of everything that had been turned into a weapon. He stepped into the clearing. I could see his boots from where I lay. Black leather. Barely a speck of dirt on them. He'd shifted back to human form. The helicopter thundered overhead, rotors beating the air, and I heard Clover screaming his name from somewhere behind him.

I looked up. His face was shadowed by the moonlight, but I could see his eyes. Golden. Still golden, even now. My wolf tried to reach for him through the bond one more time, a desperate animal instinct I couldn't stop.

*Please.*

He looked down at me. At my shattered leg. At the blood pooling under my side. At the grey shift that marked me as Omega, the rank he'd demoted me to three years ago when he believed Clover's lie.

His jaw tightened.

"I, Alistair Vane, Alpha of Ironveil Pack," he said, and his voice carried across the clearing, formal and cold, "reject you, Adele Mercer, as my mate and Luna."

The mark on my neck went ice-cold first. Like someone had pressed a frozen coin to my skin. Then it went hollow. Empty. The bond didn't snap—it just stopped. Like a door closing in an empty room. My wolf collapsed inside me, not retreating but ceasing, and the pain was so complete my vision whited out.

When I could see again, Alistair was walking away. Carrying Clover. She was screaming, clinging to his neck, and he was moving toward the helicopter with her in his arms. His warriors stood at the clearing's edge, watching. None of them moved toward me. The helicopter's spotlight swept across the trees, and I watched it lift off, rotors screaming, rising above the canopy.

I was still on the ground. The rogues were still circling.

I pressed my palm flat against the cold dirt and closed my eyes. My wolf didn't stir. There was nothing left where the bond used to be. Just a dead, hollow space in my chest that expanded with every breath.

I didn't scream. I didn't call out. I'd learned three years ago that begging only made it worse.

The rogues closed in. I could hear their paws on the forest floor, low growls vibrating through the ground. I opened my eyes and stared at the moon. It was full and white and beautiful, and I thought: *This is where it ends. In the dirt. Alone.*

Then I heard different footsteps. Faster. Organized.

A voice barked an order in a language I didn't recognize, and the rogues scattered. I turned my head—barely, my neck wouldn't move right—and saw wolves I didn't know. Bigger than any pack wolf I'd ever seen. Their fur was silver-grey, and their auras pressed down on the clearing like a physical weight.

Lycan border patrol.

One of them shifted. A man, tall and broad-shouldered, dropped to his knees beside me. He didn't touch me. He just looked at my leg, at the blood, at the mark on my neck that was already forming white and sunken.

"Can you hear me?" His voice was steady.

I nodded. Barely.

"We're taking you to the Lycan stronghold. You need a healer. Now."

I tried to speak. My throat was dry. "Don't—" I managed. "Don't take me back to Ironveil."

He met my eyes. "We have no intention of it."

They wrapped me in cloaks that smelled like pine and stone, nothing like the cedar-and-iron scent I'd lived with for six years. They lifted me carefully, and I bit down on a scream as my leg shifted. The patrol leader mind-linked ahead—I could feel the buzz of it even though I couldn't hear the words. My wolf was too silent to connect to anything.

As they carried me through the forest at speed, I kept my eyes open. I watched the trees blur past. I focused on breathing. On not passing out. On the cold hollow in my chest where the mate bond used to be.

Alistair had spoken the vow in front of his warriors. He'd made it formal. Binding. Irreversible.

He'd left me to die.

I pressed my hand against the cloak and felt something shift inside me. Not my wolf. Something deeper. Something that had been asleep for a very long time.

It didn't wake. Not yet. But it stirred.

And in the healer's ward, as they laid me on a cot and began working on my leg, as the wolfsbane antidote burned through my veins and the pain reached a point where my body couldn't hold it anymore—

That thing inside me detonated.

My back arched off the cot. My vision went white, then silver. I felt my wolf—no, not my wolf, something else entirely—explode outward, and the aura that came with it flattened every person in the tent to their knees.

I heard someone gasp. Heard the head healer's voice, shaking: "Send for the King. Now."

And I smelled my own scent for the first time in my life, the way others must have always smelled it: white jasmine and winter rain.

The scent of a Lycan.
