Chapter 2

I woke to the smell of stone and medicinal herbs. Not the pack house. Not Ironveil. The ceiling above me was vaulted, carved from grey rock that looked older than any building I'd ever seen. My leg throbbed, a deep ache that pulsed with my heartbeat, but the sharp agony was gone. Someone had set the bone. Wrapped it. I could feel the tight pressure of bandages through the thin blanket.

I tried to sit up. My body didn't cooperate. Everything felt heavy, like I was moving through water.

"Don't." A woman's voice, firm but not unkind. "You'll tear the stitches."

I turned my head. A healer stood beside the cot, her hands glowing faintly with the pale green light that meant active healing work. She was older, silver streaks in her dark hair, and her eyes were steady on mine.

"Where am I?" My voice came out rough. Unused.

"Lycan stronghold. You've been here three days."

Three days. I closed my eyes. The memory came back in pieces. The clearing. The rogues. Alistair standing over me with Clover in his arms. The formal rejection vow. The bond going cold and hollow.

I pressed my hand against my chest. The hollow was still there. A dead space where the mate bond used to live. My wolf was silent. Not gone, but distant. Like she'd retreated so far inside me I couldn't reach her.

The tent flap opened. I didn't look at first. Then the aura hit me.

It wasn't like an Alpha's aura. It was bigger. Older. The kind of presence that made the air feel heavier just by existing. I forced my eyes open and saw him.

The Lycan King.

He was tall, broad-shouldered, with silver-grey hair and eyes that were pale gold—not the bright gold of an Alpha wolf, but something quieter. Ancient. He stood just inside the tent, perfectly still, and he was staring at me like he'd seen a ghost.

Then he inhaled. Slow and deliberate.

His expression fractured. Just for a second. Something raw and unguarded crossed his face before he locked it down. He took a step forward, then another, and dropped to one knee beside my cot.

I watched him. I didn't move. I couldn't.

"Adele," he said. His voice was quiet. Careful. Like he was testing the weight of the name. Then he said something else. Another name. Longer. Lycan.

I blinked. "What?"

"Your name," he said. "The one you were given at birth. Before you were taken."

I stared at him. My brain couldn't process the words. Taken. Birth. Before.

"I don't understand," I said.

He reached out slowly, like he was afraid I'd flinch, and stopped just short of touching my hand. "Your scent," he said. "White jasmine and winter rain. It's unique to my bloodline. I've been searching for it for twenty-three years."

The room tilted. I gripped the edge of the cot. "What are you saying?"

"You're my daughter."

I couldn't breathe. The words didn't make sense. I opened my mouth. Closed it. Tried again. "No. I'm—my parents died when I was young. I grew up in a small pack on the northern border. I'm not—"

"You were stolen," he said. His voice was steady, but there was something underneath it. Something that sounded like barely controlled grief. "From this stronghold. As an infant. We searched. For years. The trail went cold."

I shook my head. It was too much. The bond was severed. My wolf was silent. My leg was shattered. And now this man—this Lycan King—was kneeling beside my cot telling me I was someone I'd never been.

"I can't—" I started.

"I know," he said. "You don't have to believe me yet. But the bloodline confirmation will prove it. We're already running the tests."

I looked at him. At the way he was looking at me. Like I was something precious he'd lost and found again. Like I mattered.

No one had looked at me like that in three years.

I turned my face away. "Why did you bring me here?"

"Because you were dying," he said simply. "And because you asked not to go back to Ironveil."

The name hit me like a fist. Ironveil. Alistair. The rejection vow. I pressed my hand against the dead mark on my neck. It was still cold. Still hollow.

"He rejected me," I said. My voice was flat. "Formally. In front of his warriors. It's binding."

"I know," the King said.

"And he left me to die."

"I know."

I looked at him again. His jaw was tight. His eyes were hard.

"What happens now?" I asked.

He stood slowly. "Now you heal. And when you're strong enough, we talk about what you want to do."

"What I want?" I almost laughed. It came out bitter. "I don't even know who I am anymore."

"You will," he said.

Over the next few days, people came and went. Healers. Scholars. They examined me like I was a puzzle to be solved. They studied my wolf—the silver-white one that had exploded out of me in the tent. They measured my aura. They took samples of my scent and compared them to records I didn't know existed.

The Lycan King sat beside my cot for every examination. He didn't speak much. Just watched. Waited.

On the third day, the last scholar—a woman with white hair and sharp eyes—finished her analysis and turned to the King. "It's confirmed," she said. "The aura pattern matches the royal line. No question."

She bowed and left.

The tent was quiet.

I looked at the King. He was still sitting in the chair beside my cot, his hands folded in his lap. His expression was carefully neutral, but I could see the tension in his shoulders.

"How long have you been looking?" I asked.

He met my eyes. "Since the night you were taken."

Twenty-three years. I tried to imagine it. Searching for someone you'd lost. Never stopping. Never knowing if you'd find them.

"I'm sorry," I said.

His brow furrowed. "For what?"

"That you didn't find me sooner."

He was quiet for a long moment. Then he said, "I'm the one who should apologize. You spent six years suffering in a pack that should have protected you. As a Luna. As an Omega. And I wasn't there."

I looked down at my hands. The bandages. The scars from the wolfsbane that would never fully fade. "It's not your fault."

"It is," he said. "You're my daughter. And I failed you."

I didn't know what to say to that. So I said nothing.

He stood. "Rest," he said. "When you're ready, we'll talk about what comes next."

He left. The tent was quiet again.

I lay back on the cot and stared at the vaulted ceiling. My wolf stirred. Just barely. A flicker of awareness deep inside me.

I pressed my hand against the hollow in my chest where the bond used to be.

Alistair had rejected me. Left me to die. Chosen Clover.

But I wasn't dead.

And I wasn't Adele Mercer, Omega of Ironveil Pack, anymore.

I was someone else. Someone I didn't know yet.

I closed my eyes and let myself feel it. The silver-white wolf. The aura that had flattened an entire tent of Lycan healers. The scent of white jasmine and winter rain.

I didn't know what came next.

But I knew one thing.

I was never going back.
