After My Mate Killed Our Pup Chapter 1

Whitley Clark hit the ground at 9:40 in the morning, three feet from my tea tray.

I was standing on the training grounds with forty ranked warriors in formation behind me, one hand resting on the shelf of my belly, when she went down. Her knees folded wrong. Her back arched. White foam bubbled at the corner of her mouth and her heels drummed against the stone like she was trying to kick her way out of her own skin.

Kolton was across the field. He crossed it in four strides.

"Whitley." He dropped to the pavement and gathered her up. "Whitley, look at me."

She looked at him. That was the part I watched. Not the convulsions—the timing. She waited until his face was directly over hers before her eyes rolled, and when her hand shot out, it didn't grab his shirt for balance. It landed on his forearm. Then that trembling finger lifted, wobbled, and pointed past his shoulder at my tray. At my cup. At me.

*She practiced that,* Sera said inside me. My wolf's voice came through cold, not scared. *Jolie. Smell it.*

I did. Wolfsbane, sharp and green and wet. Too wet. I'd set that tray down forty minutes ago in full sun. Anything poured that long would have gone bitter and flat by now. This was fresh. Someone had opened it minutes ago, which meant someone had walked past my tray while I was drilling the third line, and I knew exactly who, because she was the only wolf on this field nobody ever watched.

The healer came running with her kit. She dipped a strip into Whitley's cup, and it went purple, and she looked up at Kolton's face and went very still.

"Wolfsbane," she said. "Trace amounts. From the Luna's tray."

Kolton stood. He was still holding Whitley against his chest, and when he turned to me, I felt the mate bond in the center of my ribs go from warm to ice in the space of a single breath. Like a door closing on an empty room.

"Kolton." I kept my voice flat and level, the way I always did. "The concentration is wrong. It's fresh. That cup was in the sun for forty minutes. Have the healer test the leaf residue against the kitchen stock—it won't match. Nothing in our pantry runs that strong."

Sera threw herself at the bond. She snarled down it, shoved the smell at him, the timing, the fact that Whitley's pulse under her performance was steady as a metronome. I felt it land. I felt him receive it.

And I felt him set it down.

"She's mute," he said. "She can't even scream for help, and you poisoned her."

"I'm carrying your pup," I said. "Use your head."

"KNEEL."

The Alpha Command came down like a building falling.

It didn't hurt where I expected. It hit the back of my neck first, where his mark sat, and it pushed. My knees went out. Stone cracked against bone. Something inside me tore loose and slid, warm and wrong, and the pain that came after wasn't pain, it was *emptiness*—a small light going out in a room I'd been guarding for five months.

From my knees, I looked up.

Whitley was tucked under his arm, mouth open in perfect horror, one finger hooked neatly in his sleeve.

I did not cry. I have never cried in front of pack members and I did not start on that pavement. I got my hand flat on the stone and pushed myself up. The healer reached for my elbow and I looked at her until she withdrew it. Forty warriors I had personally shielded from the elders' council stood in formation with their eyes on the ground, and I walked past every single one of them, alone, and left a trail behind me all the way to the medical ward.

I locked the door myself.

Then I sat on the table and reached for the frequency Dylan and I built when we were children—a scrap of a mind-link nobody else could hear, made for hiding from our father's temper.

*Dylan.*

*Jolie?* He came awake fast. *Jolie, what—*

*It's time. Be ready.*

I closed the channel before he could ask what it cost.

That night I did the other thing. For six years I had held a scent-ward over Kolton's mind—a thin, invisible screen only I could weave, the reason no rival Alpha in three states had ever managed to read his aura or track his frequency. Nobody knew it existed. He never once asked why the eastern packs couldn't find him.

I took it down like pulling a stitch. One long, slow draw, and then his mind sat out there in the open, naked to anyone listening.

Then I opened the drawer under the sink and took out the vial I'd hidden three weeks ago. Whitley's tea, sealed in stasis. Wolfsbane concentration nine times anything our kitchen has ever stocked.

I put it in my pocket.

Three days later, she came to see me.

The healer was gone to the west wing. The door clicked shut, and Whitley's whole face changed—shoulders dropping, chin lifting, that soft broken thing sliding off her like a coat.

Her voice came through the pack link, clear as glass. *You should have left when you still had something to lose.*

She crossed to the windowsill where Dylan's grief-flowers stood, tipped the vase onto the floor, and ground the stems under her heel until the room smelled like crushed green.

Then she opened the door, folded her mouth into a tremble, and walked out into the hall with her arms wrapped around herself.
