Chapter 4

The Bloodmoon forest was quieter than Silverfang's territory. No constant drill commands. No wolves circling each other in performative dominance displays. Just trees and wind and the occasional rustle of smaller creatures that scattered when Seraph's presence brushed against them.

I walked the trails most mornings now. Killian had suggested it—not ordered, suggested—saying I needed space to let my wolf stretch without an audience. He was right. Seraph paced inside me constantly those first days, restless and furious and still adjusting to freedom after years of chemical burial.

This morning, Killian walked with me.

He didn't ask permission. Just fell into step beside me at the forest edge, his hands in his pockets, his stride unhurried. We walked in silence for a while. I noticed he stayed slightly behind my left shoulder—close enough to be present, far enough to give me room.

"You're doing that on purpose," I said.

He glanced at me. "Doing what?"

"Staying back. Not walking ahead."

Killian's lips curved slightly. "Yes."

"Why?"

"Because you spent years following people who wanted you behind them," he said simply. "I don't need you behind me. I need you beside me. But you'll get there when you're ready."

I pressed my thumbnail into my wrist. The small pain didn't ground me the way it used to. Seraph noticed immediately.

*Stop that,* she said inside my head. *You don't need to hurt yourself anymore.*

*It's a habit,* I thought back.

*It's a scar,* she corrected. *And he sees it.*

I looked at Killian. He was watching the treeline, his expression calm, but something in the set of his shoulders suggested he was aware of every small movement I made.

"You notice everything," I said.

He turned to face me fully. "Yes."

"That's unsettling."

"I know," Killian said. His voice was quiet. "But I'm not going to pretend I don't see you, Clementine. You've been invisible long enough."

Seraph stirred, a low rumble of approval in my chest. I ignored her.

We kept walking.

---

Meals at Bloodmoon were different too.

Killian didn't eat in the main hall with the rest of his pack. He took most meals in his private quarters—a large room with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the territory. He'd started inviting me to join him. Not ordering. Inviting.

The first time, I'd stood in the doorway uncertain.

"You can say no," Killian had said, not looking up from the report he was reading.

I'd stayed.

Now it was routine. I sat across from him at the small table by the window. We ate in comfortable silence most nights. Sometimes he asked about my training. Sometimes I asked about Lycan protocol. The conversations were careful. Deliberate. Like we were both aware we were circling something neither of us had named yet.

Tonight, Killian set down his fork and looked at me.

"The neutral territory banquet is in three days," he said.

I nodded. I'd heard. A formal gathering of neighboring packs—Silverfang, Bloodmoon, and two others. Diplomatic courtesy. Political theater.

"Dallas will be there," Killian continued. "So will Arielle. The Silverfang elders. Everyone who watched the ceremony."

"I know," I said.

Killian studied me. "He's going to make a move. Publicly. He'll frame your awakening as instability and position himself as the concerned former mate trying to protect you."

"Let him," I said.

Killian's eyes sharpened. "You have a plan."

"I have you," I corrected. "That's the plan."

His expression shifted—something I couldn't read passing across his face too quickly to name. Then he leaned back in his chair.

"Tell me what you want," he said quietly.

I met his gaze. "I want every wolf in that hall to see exactly what Dallas threw away. I want them to see who I chose instead. And I want Dallas to feel it."

Killian was silent for a long moment. Then he nodded.

"Understood," he said.

Seraph purred inside me. I told myself it was satisfaction. Strategy. Not the way Killian's voice had gone soft when he said *tell me what you want*, like my answer actually mattered to him.

---

The neutral territory lodge was larger than I'd expected. Stone and timber, built on grounds that belonged to no single pack. Wolves from four territories filled the main hall—Alphas, Betas, high-ranking warriors. The air was thick with competing auras and careful politeness.

I walked in beside Killian. Every head turned.

I wore simple black—no pack colors, no insignia. Killian had suggested it. "Let them see you," he'd said. "Not a pack affiliation. Just you."

Dallas was already seated at the head table. Arielle stood behind his chair, her hand resting on his shoulder in a possessive gesture everyone in the room could read. When Dallas saw me, his expression went carefully blank.

The meal proceeded with formal speeches and polite conversation. I barely tasted the food. Seraph was alert inside me, tracking every movement, every shift in the room's energy.

Then Dallas stood.

The hall went quiet. He smiled—warm, concerned, the perfect performance of a leader addressing a difficult situation with grace.

"I want to address something that's been on many of our minds," Dallas began. His voice carried easily. "The events at our recent Come of Age Ceremony were… unexpected. And concerning."

I kept my face neutral.

"Clementine Grant experienced a sudden, violent awakening after years of dormancy," Dallas continued. "It's a medically unstable situation. Dangerous, even. For her and for those around her." He paused. "I believe she needs protection. Guidance. The kind of support only her home pack can provide."

Arielle stepped forward, her expression perfectly arranged into worry. "We all care about Clementine," she said softly. "We just want to help her through this difficult transition."

Several wolves nodded. The Silverfang elders looked sympathetic.

I stood.

The room went silent again. Dallas's smile faltered slightly.

I didn't speak. I just walked across the hall—slow, deliberate—until I stood directly in front of Killian's chair.

Then I tilted my neck toward him.

The gesture was unmistakable. An offering. An intimacy. The faded rejection scar where Dallas's half-formed mark had once sat was fully visible under the hall's lighting.

Killian's eyes met mine. I saw the question there. The careful restraint. Waiting for my permission even now.

I nodded once. Small. Certain.

Killian rose. His Lycan aura unfurled—a pressure that hit every wolf in the hall like a physical force. I felt it against my chest, felt the way Seraph rose to meet it, felt the way every other wolf in the room flinched under the weight of it.

He stepped into my space. His hand came up to cup the side of my neck, his thumb brushing the scar with deliberate gentleness. Then he leaned in and pressed his lips to the mark Dallas had left behind.

The kiss was slow. Claiming. A deliberate rewriting of what that scar meant.

When he pulled back, his scent—dark cedar and thunderstorm—was mingled with mine so thoroughly that every wolf in the hall could smell it.

Dallas's face had gone pale. Several of his Deltas dropped their gazes, unable to hold eye contact with me. Arielle's hand had fallen from Dallas's shoulder.

Killian's voice, when he spoke, was quiet. But it carried.

"Clementine is under Bloodmoon protection," he said. "And mine. Anyone who suggests otherwise can take it up with the Lycan Council."

No one spoke.

I walked back to my seat beside Killian. My hands were steady. Seraph was purring so loudly inside me I could barely hear anything else.

The banquet continued. But the hierarchy had been rewritten, and every wolf in the hall knew it.
