Chapter 5

Six months after I crossed the Ironveil border, Sawyer woke up screaming.

I didn't know that yet. I was two hundred miles west, building a perimeter fence with Jaiden and trying not to think about the way my wolf had pressed toward his scent three days earlier. But later—much later—I would hear the story from a rogue who'd fled Ironveil that winter. She told me Sawyer had torn his own quarters apart looking for something that wasn't there.

Wildflowers and rain.

My scent.

The bond was dead. I knew that. He'd killed it himself when he spoke that rejection vow and pressed silver into my shoulder. But apparently the Moon Goddess had a sense of irony, because what he'd severed in ceremony, his wolf remembered in torture.

The phantom scent started small. Just a flicker at the edge of his awareness when he walked past the Omega tunnels. A whisper in the pack house corridors. He ignored it. Alphas didn't chase ghosts.

But it grew.

By the third month, he was waking at 2 a.m. with the smell so vivid he could taste it. He'd search his quarters, the hallways, the grounds. Nothing. No source. Just that scent—wildflowers and rain—hanging in the air like I'd walked through moments before.

He ordered the Omega tunnels scrubbed. Iron-sulfur compounds, the kind that burned out organic residue down to the stone. The omegas worked for three days straight, eyes streaming, hands blistered. When they finished, the tunnels smelled like a foundry.

The scent came back the next night.

Stronger.

I learned all this later, but I didn't need to hear it to know. Because eighteen months after I left, I started to feel it.

Not the bond. The bond was gone. But the space where it used to be—that cold, empty cavity under my ribs—started to ache. Not with longing. With satisfaction. Like my body knew, on some level, that the man who'd branded me was suffering, and it was pleased.

I didn't tell Jaiden.

We were building something by then. The Silvercrest Coalition. Fifteen wolves, all rogues, all cast out or escaped from packs that had used them up. Nora had brought three more within the first month. Jaiden had built the training protocols. I'd mapped the territory and negotiated safe passage with two neighboring bands.

We had a camp. We had structure. We had something that looked almost like a pack.

And Sawyer, two hundred miles east, was coming apart.

His wolf stopped obeying him.

That's what the rogue told me. Small things at first. It wouldn't turn toward Skyler when she touched his arm. It refused to respond to his commands during a hunt. It howled—long, broken howls—in the middle of pack meetings, and Sawyer would go rigid and silent while his wolf keened for something it couldn't name.

The healers had no answers. The bond was severed. There was no medical explanation for a wolf rejecting its own Alpha.

But I knew.

The Moon Goddess didn't forget.

Eighteen months in, Sawyer sent enforcers west.

Two of them. His most trusted. He framed it as a security matter—a rogue Omega who'd escaped with stolen resources. He gave them my description. My name. Orders to bring back confirmation of my location.

They came back three weeks later with nothing.

Well. Not nothing. A vague report about a rogue coalition operating on the coast. A female leader. No name. No confirmed identity. Just rumors from other bands about a woman who knew too much about pack infrastructure and a man with a scarred right hand who moved like royalty but claimed no rank.

Sawyer stared at that report for a long time.

His wolf told him it was me.

His wolf told him nothing, actually, because by then it had stopped answering entirely.

I was on the coastal bluffs when Jaiden told me.

We'd just finished a training session—teaching three new wolves how to move through underbrush without sound. The sun was setting over the Pacific, turning the water gold and red. I was coiling rope, my hands working on autopilot, when Jaiden sat down on the rock beside me.

He didn't speak right away. That was normal. Jaiden didn't waste words.

But there was something different in the way he sat. A weight.

I glanced at him. His scarred right hand rested on his knee, the white lines across his knuckles catching the light. He was looking at the ocean, not at me.

"I need to tell you something," he said.

I stopped coiling. Waited.

"My name is Jaiden Porter," he said. Flat. Calm. Like he was reporting the weather. "I'm the youngest son of the Lycan King."

The rope slipped through my fingers.

I didn't move. Didn't speak. Just stared at him while the ocean crashed below us and the world rearranged itself.

"I concealed it," he continued, still looking at the water, "because I wanted you to trust me without my rank. I wanted you to choose this—" he gestured vaguely at the camp behind us, "—because you wanted to, not because a prince told you to."

He paused. His jaw tightened.

"But waiting also meant withholding resources that could have protected you sooner. And that choice wasn't entirely selfless."

Silence.

The sun slipped lower. The gold light turned red, then orange, then something darker.

I found my voice.

"If the tribunal had never happened," I said quietly, "would you have told me?"

He turned then. Met my eyes.

"Yes."

I looked at him for a long moment. At the scar on his hand. At the way he sat—still leaving me the space to walk away if I wanted to.

Then I stood up, left the rope on the ground, and walked back toward camp.

He didn't follow.

That night I lay in my shelter and turned his words over like stones.

Lycan Prince.

He'd hidden it for eighteen months. Lived as a rogue. Built this coalition beside me without once using his bloodline as leverage.

And he'd told me now—not because he had to, but because he thought I deserved to know.

I didn't know what to do with that.

In the tunnels, information was currency. You hoarded it. You used it. You never gave it away for free.

Jaiden had given me the one piece of information that could have changed everything from the beginning.

And he'd waited until I didn't need it anymore.

I rolled onto my side and stared at the canvas wall.

Across the clearing, I could see the glow of his fire through the gaps in his shelter. He was still awake. I could tell by the shadows.

He hadn't asked for forgiveness. Hadn't tried to justify it beyond the simple truth.

He'd just told me. And left me the space to decide what it meant.

I closed my eyes.

Somewhere, two hundred miles east, Sawyer's wolf was howling.

And I felt nothing.
