Chapter 2

They moved before I could.

Two enforcers came out of the crowd like they'd been waiting for permission. Big men. Delta rank. They grabbed Jaiden by the shoulders and slammed him down onto the packed dirt so hard his knees cracked against the ground.

One of them forced his right hand flat. Palm down. Fingers spread.

The other lifted his boot.

I saw the silver cap on the toe. Dull gray metal riveted into the leather. The kind of thing you wear when you want to make sure the damage sticks.

"Wait—"

The boot came down.

The sound was wrong. Not a crunch. A wet snap, like green wood breaking, and under it something sharper—bone splintering into pieces too small to set. Jaiden's breath punched out of him in one hard burst but he didn't scream. His face went white. Sweat broke across his forehead in seconds.

The enforcer ground his heel in. Just a little. Just enough.

Jaiden's whole body locked rigid and a thin noise came out of his throat that he couldn't swallow back.

I looked at Sawyer.

He stood ten feet away with his arms crossed, watching. His face was calm. Not pleased. Not angry. Just watching, the way you'd watch someone fix a fence or salt meat. Skyler stood beside him, one hand resting on his forearm, her mouth curved in something too small to call a smile.

The second enforcer shifted his weight like he was thinking about Jaiden's other hand.

"Stop."

My voice came out flat. Too quiet. Nobody heard me.

The enforcer reached for Jaiden's left wrist.

I dropped.

Knees in the dirt. Hands open at my sides. Head down. The old Omega posture, the one they beat into you in the tunnels until your spine remembered it in your sleep.

"Please," I said. Loud enough this time. Loud enough for all forty wolves in that depot yard to hear. "Please stop."

The silence that followed had texture. I could feel it pressing against my skull.

Sawyer's boots appeared in my line of sight. Scuffed leather. Dust on the toes. He stopped two feet in front of me and stood there long enough that my knees started to ache against the stones.

"Look at me."

Not Alpha tone. He didn't need it. I looked up.

His face was exactly the same as it had been seven years ago in the courtyard with the brand. No anger. No satisfaction. Just a man looking at a problem he'd already solved, checking to make sure it stayed solved.

"You're begging," he said. Not a question. An observation.

"Yes."

"For him." He tilted his head toward Jaiden, still pinned, still silent except for the ragged pull of his breathing. "You don't even know his name."

"I'm begging," I said again. My voice didn't shake. That was the only victory I had left and I held onto it with everything I had. "Please let him go."

Something moved behind Sawyer's eyes. Not regret. Not shame. Something smaller and colder. He looked at me the way you look at a dog that's finally stopped biting.

He raised one hand.

The enforcers stepped back. One of them spat into the dirt beside Jaiden's head, but they stepped back.

Sawyer looked down at me for three more seconds. Then he turned and walked away. Skyler went with him, her hand still on his arm, her perfume hanging in the air like smoke.

I stayed on my knees until they were out of sight.

Then I got up, walked over to Jaiden, and crouched beside him. His hand was already swelling, the skin turning purple-black around the silver burns. The bones underneath didn't sit right. I could see the shapes of them pressing against the skin in places they shouldn't be.

"Can you stand?"

He nodded. Didn't speak. I got my shoulder under his arm and hauled him up. He was heavier than he looked and he couldn't put weight on the broken hand so his balance was off. We made it three steps before he stumbled.

"I've got you," I said quietly. "Just walk."

We walked.

Nobody stopped us. Nobody helped. Forty wolves watched us cross that yard and not one of them moved.

I got him back to the settlement's edge, to a storage shack that hadn't been used in months. I sat him down on a crate and looked at his hand in the thin light coming through the gaps in the walls.

It was bad. Worse than I'd thought. The silver had burned through skin and into bone. Even if I could set it, even if he shifted and let his wolf heal it, there'd be scars. The kind that didn't fade.

"What's your name?" I asked.

"Jaiden." His voice was hoarse. "Jaiden Porter."

"I'm Hazel."

"I know." He tried to smile and couldn't quite manage it. "Everyone knows."

I looked at his hand again. At the silver burns. At the way the bones sat wrong under the skin.

"I'm going to get you out of here," I said.

He blinked. "What?"

"Tonight. I know where the healer keeps the antidotes. I know which guards are on rotation. I know how to get past the border patrols." I met his eyes. "I've known for three years. I was just waiting for a reason."

"You don't owe me—"

"I know," I said. "I'm doing it anyway."

He stared at me. Then he nodded once, sharp, and leaned back against the wall.

I left him there and went to steal what we'd need.

The guard rotation changed at ten. I moved through the settlement on the paths I'd memorized, the ones that stayed in the blind spots. The healer's stores were in a low building near the pack house, locked but not warded. I'd watched them restock it twice a month for seven years.

I went in through the ventilation shaft.

The antidote vials were on the third shelf, labeled in the healer's cramped handwriting. Wolfsbane Antidote - Major Exposure. I took one. Just one. Any more and they'd notice before we were gone.

I was back at the shack by eleven.

Jaiden was still conscious, but barely. I uncapped the vial, made him drink half, and used the rest to clean the burns. He hissed through his teeth but didn't pull away.

"Can you walk?"

"Yes."

"Then we go now."

We went.

The border was two miles west through forest thick enough to hide us if we stayed quiet. I knew where the patrols ran. I knew which routes they skipped because the ground was too rocky and they were too lazy to check. We took those routes.

Jaiden didn't complain. Didn't ask questions. Just followed, his broken hand cradled against his chest, his breathing steady even when the ground got rough.

We crossed the boundary at 1:47 in the morning.

I knew the exact moment. There was a marker stone half-buried in the moss, old Ironveil territory line, and the air changed when we stepped past it. Lighter. Thinner. Like a hand letting go of your throat.

I stopped. Turned. Looked back at the forest we'd just left.

Nothing moved. No howls. No pursuit.

But somewhere deep in the Ironveil pack house, I knew—I knew—Sawyer woke up.

I knew because I felt it. Not the bond. The bond was dead. But the space where it used to be went colder, emptier, like the last piece of furniture being carried out of an abandoned house.

I smiled.

Then I turned west, and Jaiden and I walked into the dark.
