Chapter 1

At 8:42 p.m., the severed bond in my throat flared with the phantom heat of a dead wire.

My skin iced over. A copper tang coated my tongue—the biological taste of an Alpha deliberately snapping shut a bloodline link. Deacon had not just ignored our dying pup. He had smothered him.

Forty minutes earlier, I had been at the kitchen hearth of the Shadowridge pack house, preparing for tomorrow’s Harvest Feast. The wooden spoon had moved rhythmically in my hand, stirring sweet honey and bitter herbs into a heavy cast-iron pot. My five-year-old son, Reed, had been perched on the butcher block beside me, swinging his small legs.

"Mom?" Reed had asked, his dark eyes wide and full of fierce hope. "Will my wolf wake up before the birthday hunt? Dad promised a real run. Just us two."

"Maybe, sweetheart," I had whispered, smoothing a wild curl from his forehead.

"Is Dad coming back tonight?"

To that, I had said nothing. Out of five years of muscle memory, I had sent a thought searching down our mate channel—and slammed headfirst into the hard, stone wall Deacon had erected three weeks ago. *A temporary security measure during regional summit negotiations,* he had called it. In my chest, my inner wolf had let out a low, muffled whine, her limbs heavy from the morning dose of wolfsbane I still swallowed daily to keep my superior Alpha blood quiet. I had swallowed the bile, smiled at my son, and tucked the tincture bottle behind the tea tins.

I didn’t know then that Reed had slipped out into the hall. He had heard the pack elders murmuring about Deacon’s triumphant border alliance. Desperate to give his absent father something to be proud of, Reed had ladled steaming honey-herb stew into a glass mason jar, wrapped it in a kitchen towel, and crept out the side door into the frozen night.

He never made it past the treeline. Deacon had quietly repositioned rogue skirmishers along the eastern boundary as a false-flag threat for his political prestige. The rogues had found a child in the dark instead. The glass had shattered in the frozen dirt.

Now, I stood in the healer’s den, watching the red-soaked linen on the cot.

Maren Sollis, our senior pack healer, pressed trembling hands to Reed’s chest. Her healing light flickered, a sickening, pale yellow that could not stem the hemorrhaging.

"His lungs are collapsing, Avery," Maren choked out, tears cutting tracks through the grime on her face. "He’s trying to call out. He’s pushing into the pack link."

Reed was too young to shift, but the terror tore open his latent instincts. On the cot, his small chest heaved. I couldn't hear the mental link because Deacon had severed my access, but I saw it in Reed’s glazed eyes: an image of pack house lanterns glowing through dark pine needles, shivering with cold, begging for his father.

Across the territory line, Deacon felt that pulse. I knew the moment it hit him because the deadened mate mark on my collarbone twitched with an abrupt, violent sting.

He felt his son dying. And in real time, Deacon crushed the signal.

He snuffed it out like a wet thumb over a candle flame. He did it because opening the channel to answer Reed would have ripped his masked location wide open—and let me smell the heavy cedar oil he used to drown out another woman's musk. He smothered his child’s dying breath to keep his sheets clean.

My wolf didn't whine this time. Beneath five years of wolfsbane sludge, she bared her teeth and snarled, an ancient, violent vibration rattling my ribs.

I grabbed my smartphone off the stainless-steel tray. My hands were perfectly steady. I dialed Deacon’s direct personal line.

It rang once. Twice. On the third ring, it clicked open.

"Deacon isn't taking calls, Luna," a woman’s voice purred. It was Cassidy Lawson, from the Nighthollow Pack. She was breathing softly, her tone dripping with lazy contempt. "He's occupied. And honestly, Avery? Your constant theatrics are exhausting. Let the man rest."

"My son is bleeding to death on a cot," I said, my voice dead and level. "Put my mate on the phone."

"Find another excuse to drag him home," Cassidy laughed softly. "We're busy."

The line went dead.

Above the cot, the heart-monitor stone flickered, dimmed, and turned a flat, lifeless grey.

Maren’s glowing hands went completely still. She slowly pulled back from Reed’s chest, her head dropping as a sob tore from her throat. She couldn't meet my eyes.

I didn't scream. I didn't drop to my knees. The mark on my neck—the bite Deacon had carved into my flesh five years ago—went icy cold, then entirely hollow, like a door slamming shut in an abandoned house.

I stepped up to the cot. I reached out and gently closed Reed's eyelids. He had died in absolute silence, waiting for a voice that never came.

"Maren," I said. My voice was quiet, stripped of all tears, cutting through the small room like a serrated blade.

The healer looked up, trembling.

"Do not log his time of death in the pack records," I commanded, each word dropping like granite. "And pull the surveillance logs from the eastern perimeter gate. Every single byte."

Maren swallowed hard, recognizing the terrifying, unyielding iron in my tone. "Avery... what are you going to do?"

I bent down and lifted Reed’s limp, cooling body into my arms, wrapping him tightly in the embroidered ceremonial shawl I was supposed to wear as Luna tomorrow.

"I am going to build his pyre," I said, walking toward the heavy clinic door without looking back. "And when Deacon comes back for his feast, I am going to feed him the ashes."
