After My Mate Chose His Mistress Over Our Child

At 8:42 p.m., a phantom heat flares in my throat—the biological taste of an Alpha deliberately snapping shut a bloodline link. Deacon hasn't just ignored our dying pup; he has smothered him. Forty minutes earlier, I stirred honey and herbs for the Harvest Feast while five-year-old Reed asked if his wolf would wake before the birthday hunt. Now, the severed bond leaves us alone against a pack that chose betrayal.

Chapter 2

The freezing rain cut like needles against my face as I carried Reed up the hillside behind the pack house.

He felt impossibly light in my arms. The embroidered silk hem of my ceremonial Luna shawl dragged through the black mud, soaking up grit and cold water, but I didn't care to lift it.

The house below was completely silent. Down there, warm yellow lights flickered in the hall windows. A few warriors were probably laughing over card games, and elders were resting before the morning’s feast. Not a single person stepped out onto the porch. Not a single head turned. They knew nothing, because Deacon had locked my mind out of the pack link weeks ago. I hadn't been able to scream through the bond when Reed was bleeding out, and the pack had felt none of my terror.

I was entirely alone.

Near the crest of the hill, beside a stand of dripping firs, I laid Reed gently on a dry tarp. My hands were stiff and blue with cold, but they didn’t shake as I gathered the split cedar and pine logs I had stacked weeks ago. I built the pyre piece by piece.

Footsteps squelched in the mud behind me. It was Maren. The healer didn’t speak. She just knelt, pressed a glowing, heated hearthstone into my palm, and pulled her damp coat tight around her trembling shoulders. Her eyes were red, full of helpless grief. I nodded once, and she stepped back down the hill into the shadows, leaving us in peace.

I placed Reed on the timber, tucking the muddy silk tightly around his small shoulders. Then I set the glowing stone against the dry birch shavings beneath him.

The spark caught. Orange flames licked hungrily at the wood, hiss-popping against the rain. The silk of the Luna shawl blackened, curled, and surrendered to the heat.

I stood there in the freezing downpour for hours. I didn't cry. My tears had frozen in my chest, turning to iron. I watched the smoke rise into the black sky until dawn broke behind the clouds, grey and lifeless. When the last ember turned to dull ash, I used a silver spade to sweep the bone fragments into a small stone urn.

I carried the urn down the hill and walked through the back door into the pack house kitchen.

The house was just waking up. I set the urn right in the center of the clean marble island.

The front door banged open five minutes later.

Footsteps echoed in the hallway—heavy, confident, and hurried. Deacon walked into the kitchen, unbuttoning his damp leather jacket. He smelled of morning pine, gasoline, and underneath it all, thick cedar oil. It was the heavy oil he used to mask the musk of Cassidy Lawson.

He didn’t look at my face. He didn't even notice my mud-caked boots or my soaking hair.

"Avery, where's my ceremonial coat?" he demanded, running a hand through his dark hair. "The southern border delegation is already pulling into the drive. I told you I needed the silver trim pressed by sunrise."

I looked at him. Five years of my life. Five years of drinking bitter wolfsbane every single morning so my Alpha blood wouldn't outshine his fragile pride. Five years of shrinking myself so he could feel tall.

"Deacon," I said.

My voice was quiet, but it stopped him in his tracks. He blinked, finally taking in my drenched clothes, the dark circles under my eyes, and the plain grey jar sitting between us.

"What is this?" he frowned, stepping closer to the island. "Why aren't you dressed? Don't start with me, Avery. Whatever mood you're in, save it until after the feast."

I touched the lid of the urn with two cold fingers.

"I, Avery Graves," I said, my voice cutting through the quiet kitchen like a steel wire, "reject you, Deacon Hale, as my mate and Alpha."

Deacon froze. His eyes widened in sheer disbelief. "What the hell are you—"

The words were barely out of his mouth when the bond snapped.

On the left side of my throat, the mating bite Deacon had carved into my flesh five years ago split open. It didn't bleed. It went icy, violent, and hollow, as if someone had driven a chisel of black ice straight into my collarbone and twisted it until the root tore free.

Deacon let out a choked, ragged sound. His knees buckled, hitting the hard tile floor with a sickening thud. He grabbed his chest, his face draining of all color as his inner wolf howled in agony inside his skull.

The soul-crushing pain of the severed bond ripped through me, too. But instead of breaking me, the agony collided head-on with five years of chemical poison.

The wolfsbane in my veins detonated.

The bitter sludge that had kept my inner wolf asleep for half a decade burned away in a single, roaring flash of heat. Deep in my ribs, something massive and ancient opened its eyes. My wolf—silver-white, broad-shouldered, and born of pure Alpha lineage—rose to her full height.

A biological pulse exploded from my chest.

It wasn't a sound. It was an invisible shockwave of pure, unadulterated dominance.

The scent of white sage and freezing winter rain tore through the kitchen, blowing outward through the halls, up the stairwells, and into every corner of the pack house.

Instantly, the entire house fell dead silent.

In the dining room, plates clattered to the floor. Footsteps stopped dead. From the doorways, pack warriors, grizzled elders, and Omegas carrying breakfast trays all froze mid-motion. Every wolf in Shadowridge felt the sudden, crushing gravity in their bones.

Heads turned toward me. It wasn't a choice; it was raw, ancient biology. Their spines bent, their instincts screaming at them to yield to the superior bloodline standing in the center of the room.

Deacon was still on his knees, panting, sweat dripping from his chin. Panic flared in his eyes as he felt the pack’s invisible tether slipping through his fingers. He bared his teeth, forcing air into his lungs, and reached deep for his Alpha tone.

"Get on your knees!" he snarled at me.

His voice came out flat. It was thin, weightless, and hollow. The authoritative rumble he had used for years lacked any bite—because the wolf backing him was weak, and mine was awake. Not a single person in the room flinched.

Deacon's face flushed red with humiliation. He looked around at his warriors, but none of them moved to his side.

"Don't look at her!" Deacon spat, his voice cracking as he pointed a trembling finger at me. "It's wolfsbane withdrawal! She's hysterical! She’s been poisoning her own mind for years! She muzzled her own wolf because she's unstable—she has no standing to claim a damn thing!"

He shouted, but the silence that followed swallowed his words whole.

Nobody stepped forward to help him up.

The pack warriors stood frozen by the doorway, looking down at their own hands in confused shame. They tried to look at Deacon, their rightful leader, but their muscles refused to obey. Their heads remained bowed toward me, pinned to the floor under the weight of an Alpha they had never known was there.
