After My Mate Chose His Mistress Over Me
After My Mate Chose His Mistress Over Me Chapter 1
The fork hit the hardwood at exactly 7:14 PM, and my seven-year-old son hit the floor two seconds later.
Bodie didn't even cry out. His small body locked rigid, his eyes rolling white toward the dining hall rafters. White froth bubbled over his lower lip as violent spasms tore through his limbs. Inside his chest, the faint, fragile flutter of his developing inner wolf shrieked once—a thin, terrified yelp—and went silent.
"Bodie!" I dropped from the bench, catching his head before it cracked against the floor. "Seraphine! Call Seraphine!"
The Thanksgiving feast shattered around us. Chairs scraped back. Shouts overlapped.
"Lockdown protocol," a smooth voice cut through the panic. Rayna Dixon stepped forward from the Alpha's head table, her posture immaculate. "The food might be externally poisoned. Security breach. Seal the doors immediately."
"No!" I screamed, my hands trembling against Bodie’s burning neck. "He’s suffocating! Let the healer in!"
Two Delta guards pulled the heavy double doors shut. On the other side of the glass panel, pack healer Seraphine Voss banged her fists against the wood, her medical kit slung over her shoulder, completely locked out.
The corridor doors banged open, and Drake marched into the hall. He smelled of winter pine, but beneath it clung the sickeningly sweet scent of Rayna’s clover soap.
"Drake, override it!" I demanded, looking straight into the eyes of my fated mate. "He ate something laced. Bodie is dying!"
Drake looked at our convulsing son, then glanced at Rayna.
"Alpha," Rayna said softly, lowering her gaze with practiced deference. "If the kitchen is compromised by rogues, opening the perimeter puts two hundred wolves at risk. Standard defense code four."
I opened my mouth, but Drake’s eyes flashed gold.
*"Enough, Hayden."*
The Alpha tone crashed over me like a tidal wave of lead. The invisible weight slammed into my spine, forcing my torso down, flattening my lungs, and cutting off my voice mid-throat. My knees dug painfully into the floorboards.
"Maintain the seal," Drake commanded coldly. "Nobody enters or leaves until the perimeter is swept."
Seraphine stood trapped behind the reinforced glass. For twelve agonizing minutes, all I could do was hold my son as the wolfsbane tore through his blood, unable to speak, unable to move under my mate's crushing aura.

By the time the lockdown was lifted and Seraphine rushed to Bodie's side, the silence inside the boy was absolute.
In the clinic room, Seraphine pulled her hands back from Bodie’s chest. Her face was pale, her eyes refusing to meet mine.
"The toxin scorched the bridge," Seraphine whispered, her voice cracking. "His inner wolf... it was forced into permanent dormancy, Hayden. He won't ever shift."
I held my sleeping boy’s cold hand. Across our mate bond, I waited for Drake’s grief. I waited for his horror. Instead, all that bled through the channel was a dull, heavy stone of irritation—annoyance that my screaming had disrupted the banquet, coupled with smug certainty that his command had been correct.
The sacred bond between us didn't feel like a gift anymore. It felt like an iron collar choking the life out of me.

At dawn, I slipped into the main kitchen before the staff arrived. I checked the prep tables, the trash bins, and the seasoning racks. Hidden beneath an empty broth carton in the back pantry, I found what I needed: a small amber glass vial, its rubber stopper smelling faintly of dried wolfsbane root.
I slid the vial deep into my jacket pocket.
When I turned, Rayna was standing in the doorway. She held a steaming mug of tea, her expression smooth and entirely unbothered. She didn't say a word. She just watched me with flat, mocking eyes, took a sip, and walked away.
The confrontation came twelve hours later in the quiet hallway outside Drake’s office.
"You put it in his gravy," I said, blocking her path.
Rayna stopped. She tilted her head, her voice dropping into a wounded, innocent pitch. "Luna, I would never harm a child. You're upset, and I understand that, but—"
She stepped closer, leaning her mouth directly against my ear.
"Though honestly," she whispered, her voice icy and sharp, "perhaps it's for the best. Not every runt is meant to shift."
The world turned red.
My human nails split into curved black claws. My canines tore violently through my gums. My inner wolf roared in pure maternal fury, snapping through every ounce of restraint I possessed.
I didn't argue. I swung.
My claws ripped through her flesh, carving three deep, ragged furrows from her left cheekbone down to her jaw. Blood sprayed hot across the wall.
Rayna’s high-pitched shriek tore through the corridor. Doors flew open. Footsteps thundered down the hall.
Drake rounded the corner first. He took in the blood on my hand, my bared fangs, and Rayna sobbing on the floor.
He didn't ask what happened. His Alpha aura slammed down like a falling iron gate, smashing me to my knees against the carpet. The force knocked the wind from my chest, but my wolf didn't cower. Deep in my ribs, she snarled back—a vicious, bloody growl of pure hate.
Drake ignored me entirely. He dropped to his knees beside Rayna. With tender, trembling hands, he pulled her silk blouse off her left shoulder, exposing the torn skin.
From his pocket, he drew a tin of yarrow healing salve. Right there, on the floor in front of twenty assembling pack warriors, Drake dipped his fingers into the balm and gently smoothed it over Rayna’s bare shoulder and bleeding neck.
It was an act of intimate care reserved solely for a mate.
The warriors went dead silent. The message was unmistakable.
Forced on my knees, I pressed my thumb hard against the pulse point on my wrist, feeling the cold, hard glass of the wolfsbane vial safe in my coat.
Drake didn't look back at me as he lifted Rayna into his arms. "Beta Marcus," he ordered, his voice flat and dead. "Prep the isolation cell."
