Chapter 1

The bond broke at 11:47 on a Thursday night, under a full moon that had no business being so bright.

I felt it before he even finished the words. A chill, starting at the base of my neck where his mark sat—four years old, incomplete, always incomplete—spreading outward like frost crawling across glass. Then hollow. Like someone had reached into my chest and scooped out the part of me that knew where he was.

"I, Noah Reed, Alpha of Silverfang, reject you, Savannah Campbell, as my mate."

The words landed on the ceremonial ground like stones dropped into still water. Rings spreading outward. The assembled pack—two hundred wolves, every rank from Beta down to Omega—went so quiet I could hear the torches hissing.

I stood in the white dress I had sewn myself. Three weeks of evenings. My best work. The hem brushed the grass and I remember thinking, absurdly, that I had pressed it that morning.

His eyes never found mine. Not once. He had looked past me the entire time, the way you look past furniture you have decided to move out.

Then he turned, extended his hand, and smiled—actually smiled—at Lyla Stevens.

"I name Lyla Stevens of Nightveil Pack as my chosen Luna."

She stepped forward in a gown that cost more than my parents earned in a year. Dark-haired, fully shifted before, powerful wolf, all the things I was not. She took his hand without looking at me either.

The mark on my neck went from cold to nothing. Not pain. Absence. Like a door closing in an empty room, the click of it echoing long after the sound was gone.

In the silence inside my head where my wolf should have been—nothing. Not even static. She had been quiet for years, dormant, a presence I could sometimes almost feel if I held still long enough. Now she was simply gone. Flatlined. The most complete silence I had ever heard.

Somewhere in the third row, my parents stood. I did not look at them. I already knew what I would see.

Noah reached into his jacket and pulled out a leather pouch. He threw it.

It hit the ceremonial ground at my feet and split open. Silver coins scattered across the grass, catching moonlight. The smell hit me a half-second later—sharp, medicinal, wrong. Wolfsbane. Laced into the metal itself.

"An omega-blooded leech," he said, loud enough for the back row. "Who faked a mate-scent to climb rank. Take your payment and go."

I opened my mouth.

The Alpha tone hit me like a wall.

It was not sound. It was pressure—a command that bypassed my ears entirely and slammed directly into the base of my skull, compressing my throat, locking my jaw. My vision went white at the edges. My knees wanted to buckle. Four years of conditioning to his authority made every instinct in my body want to go quiet and small and still.

I fought it. I have no better description than that. I planted my feet and I fought it, the way you push against a door someone is holding shut from the other side, and the effort split something open behind my nose and blood ran over my lip, warm and copper-tasting, and I thought clearly: he is using his voice as a weapon on me. In front of everyone. He is doing this in front of everyone.

The pressure cracked.

I spat blood onto the ceremonial ground. Right at his feet. It landed on the grass between us, dark against the moonlight, and the pack made a sound I had never heard from them before—not horror, not approval, something in between, something that had no name.

Noah's jaw tightened.

I crouched down. Picked up the leather pouch. The wolfsbane stung my fingers through the leather and I did not let go. I straightened my spine—vertebra by vertebra, deliberately—tucked the pouch into my belt, and walked out of the ceremony.

I did not run. I did not look back. I walked at the pace of someone who has somewhere to be.

My parents were in the third row. I walked past them. My mother's hand moved slightly, like she might reach out, and then didn't. My father stared at the ground.

I kept walking.

The pack parted for me. Not in respect—in something closer to shock. A wolfless omega, bleeding from the nose, carrying a pouch of wolfsbane silver, walking out of her own rejection ceremony like she had somewhere better to be.

The cold spot on my neck pulsed once as I passed the last torch.

I pressed two fingers to it. Kept walking.

Behind me, I heard Noah's voice resume—smooth again, authoritative again, already moving on to the next part of his evening. Already done with me.

Good, I thought. Stay done.

I had a grandmother's healer journals to collect. I had a dog to free from a cage. And I had a leather pouch full of silver coins that a man had thrown at my feet in contempt.

I intended to spend every one of them.
