Chapter 2

I had been in rogue territory for four days when the wolf appeared at the tree line.

I smelled nothing. That was the problem with being wolfless—the world came to me half-blind, stripped of the layer of scent-information that every other werewolf read like a second language. I saw her because Buster lifted his head from my lap and went still, ears forward, tail low but not tucked. Watchful, not afraid. I had learned to trust that distinction.

She was compact, dark-brown, and she was watching me with the kind of frank, unhurried assessment that meant she had been there for a while before I noticed. Then, without being asked, she shifted.

It took maybe four seconds. Human again: medium height, athletic, a leather cord around her wrist with a Stormhollow Pack marker I recognized from my grandmother's journal entries on border territories. She had a short scar through one eyebrow and she looked at my camp—the wolfsbane ring I had pressed into the earth around the perimeter, the healer's pouch open beside the fire, Buster's ribs still too visible under his coat—and then she looked at me.

At the cold mark on my neck. She didn't look away from it.

"You're either the bravest or the dumbest she-wolf I've ever seen in this corridor," she said. No preamble. No softening. "Either way, you're coming with me tonight before the eastern rogues find you."

I didn't move. "I don't know you."

"Joy Cruz. Gamma of Stormhollow." She crouched down to Buster's level without asking permission, which I noted. He sniffed her hand and let her. "I've been tracking you since you crossed into this corridor. You've been moving smart—the wolfsbane perimeter is good work—but you're missing scent tells that'll get you cornered by morning."

I knew she was right. I had mapped Silverfang's border for four years; I did not know this territory.

"I'm not asking you to owe me," she added, standing. "I'm asking you to not die in my territory, because the paperwork is annoying."

It was such a specific, ridiculous thing to say. I felt something loosen, very slightly, in my chest—not warmth exactly, but the absence of the particular tension that comes from waiting for someone to pity you.

I picked up my pack. "Lead the way."

The next two days were the hardest moving I had done since leaving Silverfang. Joy ran point on everything—she read the rogue activity in the trees the way I read a patient's gait, instinctively, continuously, adjusting without breaking stride. Twice she redirected us without explanation and twice I heard, minutes later, the distant sounds of a rogue patrol moving through the path we had abandoned. I filed this without comment. She was very good at her job.

On the second night we reached a Stormhollow waystation—a low stone structure, locked, which Joy opened with a key she wore around her neck. It was dry inside and it smelled like nobody had been there in weeks, which was the best thing I had smelled in days.

I was feeding Buster when he crossed the room and pressed his nose against Joy's knee, then wagged his tail. Once, twice. Deliberate.

He had not done that for anyone since before Noah started using him as leverage.

I watched Joy look down at him, then look up at me with a grin that cracked the professional composure she'd been wearing for two days. "I'll take the dog's endorsement."

"He's a reliable judge," I said.

We ate from her pack rations and she asked, without making it a production, what had happened. I told her the short version. The ceremony. The rejection vow. The wolfsbane silver. She listened without interrupting, without the particular soft expression people put on when they are preparing to tell you it will be okay.

When I finished, she was quiet for a moment. Then: "I know of a pack that might take you. She-wolf Alpha, runs a tight operation, doesn't owe favors to anyone in the eastern corridor." She paused. "She'll probably turn you away on principle. She turns most people away."

"Natalia Coleman," I said. I had come across the name in my grandmother's journals—a notation about Ironridge's healer practices, a border pack known for its self-sufficiency.

Joy raised an eyebrow. "You've done your homework."

"I've been doing homework my whole life." I pressed two fingers to the cold spot on my neck without thinking, then lowered my hand. "What's the approach?"

"Show her the mark. Don't make it a sympathy play." Joy looked at me steadily. "Just let her see it. She'll know what it is. She has one too."

I filed that. Stored it next to everything else.

Buster settled against my leg, heavy and warm. Outside, the rogue corridor was quiet. I looked at the wolfsbane pouch on my belt—Noah's silver, still there, still mine—and thought about a she-wolf Alpha who had survived her own rejection and built something with the pieces.

I wanted to see what Ironridge looked like.

---

Natalia Coleman met me at the border herself.

She shifted back from steel-grey wolf to human with an economy of movement that reminded me of a surgeon closing an incision—no wasted motion, everything deliberate. She was maybe ten years older than me, with the particular stillness of someone who had long ago stopped needing to prove anything to a room.

She looked at my healer's pouch. At Buster. At the cold mark on my neck, which she studied for exactly two seconds before her eyes returned to mine.

"I've turned away three she-wolves in six months," she said. "My policy on outsiders is not flexible."

"I know." I kept my voice even. "I'm not asking for charity. I'm offering a trade. Your current healer can't replicate the wolfsbane antidote formulation in the eastern corridor strain—I've seen the injury reports from your border patrols in the regional healer network. I can make it. I have the formula memorized." I held her gaze. "Provisional sanctuary. I work the healer clinic. You vet me as long as you need to."

She was quiet. The kind of quiet that meant she was thinking, not stalling.

Her eyes dropped once more to the scar on my neck. The cold, permanent, nothing-there mark of a bond that had been spoken and broken.

"You were rejected," she said. Not a question. Not pity. Just the flat acknowledgment of a fact.

"I was," I said. "And I'm still standing." I let one beat pass. "Do we have a deal or not?"

Something shifted in her expression—barely, the way ice shifts before it cracks. She looked at Buster one more time, then back at me.

"You start this afternoon," she said. "Don't make me regret it."

"I won't," I said.

I followed her through the Ironridge border, Buster at my heel, the wolfsbane silver pouch at my hip, and the cold mark on my neck that I had stopped pressing my fingers to.

I had somewhere to be.
