Chapter 4

By morning, the story had already been written.

Lorenzo had gathered the pack elders before sunrise. The official narrative spread through Shadowvale like wildfire: I had launched an unprovoked chemical attack on Sutton in neutral territory, and Lorenzo had stepped in with Alpha force to protect an innocent pack mate.

Not a single wolf questioned it. Warriors I had known for years walked past me in the corridors with their eyes glued to the floor. When they looked at the heavy white bandages wrapped around my arm, they saw only an embarrassment. A bitter, discarded mate who had lost her mind.

Rocco knew better.

Two days after the club, he walked into my small sitting room and laid a thick manila folder on the desk. When he opened it, I saw printed incident logs, time-stamped security feeds from the parking lot, and medical scans of the deep glass lacerations on my arm. It was already his second folder.

"Keep documenting," I told him quietly, my voice raw.

"Always," Rocco said.

Late at night, when the pack house went dead and the phantom ache of Lorenzo’s bond scraped against my ribs, I didn't cry. Instead, I worked under the dim glow of a desk lamp, building what I called my exit architecture.

I made neat, precise lists. Bylaw violations. Fraudulent transfers of pack assets to Sutton’s name. Signed receipts of wolfsbane shipments. I documented every stripped duty, every public humiliation, and every breach of council law.

I didn't have the power to challenge an Alpha. Not yet. My wolf was quiet, coiled tight beneath my skin, biding her time. But I knew one day an authority would come that answered to higher laws than Lorenzo’s arrogance. And when that day arrived, I would have the noose ready.

Still, a foolish, bleeding piece of my heart needed to know the truth.

I needed to know if anything was left of the man whose fever-shifts I had endured for seventy-two straight hours.

On a rainy Thursday night, I sent a formal summons to Lorenzo’s private study, asking to meet in the old parlor on the ground floor.

He arrived twenty minutes late. He didn't take off his coat. He stood near the heavy oak door, looking at me with cold, impatient disgust.

"Make it quick, Reina. Sutton is waiting."

On the low table between us sat a single, silver-rimmed goblet filled with dark liquid.

"That's a concentrated wolfsbane draught," I said, keeping my hands steady in my lap. "A single sip will permanently silence your wolf. It won't kill you, but it will make you an ordinary human."

Lorenzo didn't move. "Are you threatening me?"

"I have someone outside Sutton’s quarters right now," I lied, the bluff tasting like ash on my tongue. "Drink it, Lorenzo. Give up your crown for her. Prove you love her enough to bleed for her the way I bled for you. Drink it, or she doesn't survive the night."

It was a test. A desperate, final test to see if he valued a life above his own power—or if he possessed any shred of genuine honor.

Lorenzo stared at the goblet. Then he looked at me.

His eyes were completely empty. Without a word, he crossed the room, picked up the goblet, and drained it in three hard swallows.

He didn't hesitate. Not for a fraction of a second.

My breath caught in my throat. For one wild, delusional second, I thought he had chosen sacrifice.

Then he slammed the empty goblet down on the wooden table and smiled.

*Clack.*

A heavy iron bolt slid home behind him.

The door to the corridor locked from the outside. Another heavy deadbolt clicked into place at the side exit.

From the shadowed doorway leading to the service hall, Delta Vance stepped into the room. He carried a military-grade digital tablet, his face flat and calm. There was no hatred in Vance's eyes. It was worse than that. He looked like an accountant finishing an end-of-year audit.

"Basement perimeter is sealed, Alpha," Vance reported smoothly. "Incendiary charges are armed. Wolfsbane fuel mixture is flowing through the central ventilation ducts."

My blood ran instantly cold.

Lorenzo hadn't drunk the goblet out of love for Sutton. He had drunk it because he knew my threat was meaningless. He had already set my execution in motion before he even walked through the door.

"You set charges in the pack house?" I whispered, rising from my chair. "Vance, you helped build this house."

"He was compensated, Reina," Lorenzo said softly.

Lorenzo stepped toward me. His casual posture vanished, replaced by a sudden, terrifying speed.

Before I could draw breath to scream, his hand grabbed the front of my shirt and jerked me forward. The other hand came up from his waistband.

Steel caught the dim light—no, not steel.

The blade had the dull, sickening white sheen of pure silver.

"Lorenzo, wait—"

He drove the blade into my lower abdomen.

He didn't hesitate. He thrust it deep, twisting the hilt with sickening precision directly through the inflamed mark on my skin where our mate bond was anchored.

*SZZZZT.*

Agony unlike anything I had ever known tore through my body. The silver bit into bond-scarred flesh, burning through tissue and muscle like white-hot acid. It severed the invisible tether between our souls with the violence of a rusted saw.

My wolf shrieked deep in my skull, thrashing against an impenetrable wall of poison. The silver completely blocked her ability to heal.

My knees hit the floorboards with a dull thud. Dark, steaming blood flooded through my fingers as I instinctively clamped both hands over my stomach.

Lorenzo leaned down. His mouth brushed the shell of my ear, his breath warm and steady.

"You should have accepted the rejection," he whispered.

He pulled the blade free with a wet slide and wiped the silver clean on his sleeve.

"Let's go, Vance," Lorenzo said, not looking back.

"Yes, Alpha."

The service door clicked shut. The heavy iron latch engaged from the outside.

A muffled *THUMP* vibrated through the floorboards beneath me.

Two seconds later, bright green flames roared out of the heating vents. The chemical stench of wolfsbane filled the room, thick and suffocating. The drywall blistered and blackened within seconds, and the ceiling began to splinter and groan under intense heat.

I lay curled on the burning floorboards, choking on poisoned smoke.

I pressed my palms frantically against my stomach, trying to hold the blood inside. But beneath the searing agony of the silver, a deeper, colder hollow opened up inside me. A tiny, fragile pulse of life—one Lorenzo never knew existed—fluttered weakly once, and then flickered out into nothingness.

My baby was gone.

Through the roaring flames and falling timber, I looked at the locked door where my mate had walked away.

In that blinding, burning darkness, the last scrap of my devotion died. All that remained was ashes, blood, and a fury cold enough to freeze the world.
