Chapter 5

The roar of collapsing timber was the last thing I heard before the wall blew inward.

A massive, dark wolf crashed through the burning studs, splintering oak and drywall in a shower of sparks. Green wolfsbane fire caught his coat, and a jagged edge of framing sheared across his left shoulder, tearing muscle wide open.

Rocco didn’t even flinch.

He lunged across the blazing parlor floorboards, his jaws clamping tight onto the collar of my jacket. He hauled me through the smoke, my blood leaving a steaming crimson smear across the charred hardwood.

The heat vanished into biting, freezing air.

He shifted on the wet grass, coughing ash, his skin blistered and his shoulder gushing dark blood. He didn't check his own wounds. He gathered me into his arms, threw me into the back seat of his truck, and slammed the door.

We drove through the night. Two states. Five hundred miles of black asphalt. I spent the entire ride slipping in and out of consciousness, my hands glued to my stomach, trying to hold on to a warmth that was already slipping away.

The safehouse clinic smelled like bleach, dried lavender, and ozone.

It was hidden in an unmarked valley, run by healers who answered to no Alpha. I woke up under buzzing fluorescent lights with steel needles taped into the veins of my arms.

A tall she-wolf in blue medical scrubs stood over me, wiping black, silver-tainted fluid from a metal tray. Head Healer Elara Voss had cold, capable eyes.

"You're awake," she said, her voice completely flat.

I tried to sit up, but a bolt of agony ripped through my lower belly, forcing a choked gasp from my throat.

"Don't move," Elara said, setting down her forceps with a sharp click. "Lorenzo’s blade was solid silver. It punched straight through your mate mark and into the uterine wall. The silver poison stopped your wolf from stitching the tissue."

She looked at me without pity, but her voice dipped low.

"We stopped the internal bleeding. We saved your life. But the pup didn't make it, Reina. The womb was flooded with silver."

The room went soundless.

It was as if all the air had been sucked out through the ventilation vents. Every breath felt thin, sharp, and entirely pointless.

Through the cracked door of the recovery room, I saw the hallway. Rocco was sitting on a metal folding chair opposite my room. His left shoulder was wrapped in thick surgical gauze, his face hollow with dark shadows.

"Rocco," I whispered.

He heard me instantly. He stood up, pushed the door open, and stepped inside. He smelled like road dust and old blood.

I looked at him, my knuckles white as they gripped the thin hospital blanket.

"He killed him," I choked out, the words tearing my throat like broken glass. "Lorenzo killed our pup."

Rocco didn't offer empty words. He didn't tell me it was going to be alright. He walked to the edge of the bed, placed his heavy, calloused hand flat on my shoulder, and pressed down gently. Just enough weight to anchor me to the earth.

He stayed.

He didn't leave that hallway for the next three months.

Recovery was not a straight line. It was an excavation.

Elara had to cut me open three separate times to extract microscopic shavings of silver that Lorenzo’s serrated blade had left behind. Each surgery was a fresh hell of scalpels and burning flesh, stripping away another layer of the woman I used to be.

Between the procedures, I broke apart in silence.

I grieved the child I would never hold. I grieved the bond I had guarded with my life. But most of all, I choked on the memories of my own blind devotion.

I remembered Lorenzo shaking violently through a fever-shift three years ago, his heavy wolf head resting in my lap while I spoon-fed him crushed willow bark. I remembered his human lips pressed against my collarbone, whispering, *You're the only thing that smells like home, Reina.*

It was all poison. Every tender word had just been bait for the slaughter.

I slept in short, terrified bursts, dragging my thin mattress across the linoleum every night so my back was pressed firmly against the solid concrete wall. My right hand stayed glued to my lower belly, my fingers obsessively tracing the jagged, puckered silver brand over my dead mate mark.

During the third extraction surgery, something shifted.

I was half-sedated on the operating table, watching the harsh surgical lamp sway overhead. Elara was digging deep near the pelvic bone, tweezers clicking against bone.

Suddenly, the heart monitor on the wall didn't just beep—it screamed.

A high, erratic rhythm filled the room. The red digital numbers spiked, climbing past thresholds that should have triggered cardiac arrest.

"Her blood pressure is through the roof," an assistant panicked, reaching for a sedative vial. "Her heart's going to burst!"

"Step back!" Elara barked.

I felt it then. Beneath the torn flesh, deep within the marrow of my hips, something ancient and massive twitched. A heavy, rhythmic vibration rolled through my ribcage—not like a heartbeat, but like the thud of an enormous paw striking frozen ground.

Then, just as quickly as it rose, the vitals flattened into a low, terrifyingly calm rhythm.

Elara froze, her scalpel hovering in the air. She stared at the monitor, then looked down at my face. Her hands were visibly trembling. Without a word to her team, she made a single, cryptic note in the margins of my medical chart, closed the incision, and taped the dressing tight.

Two weeks later, at three in the morning, the silence broke.

I snapped awake.

I hadn't heard a sound, but my hand was already clamped violently over my abdomen.

The scar over my mate mark wasn't throbbing with the dull, sick heat of silver anymore. It was burning with a blinding, ice-cold brilliance that radiated straight into my spine.

*Thump.*

The floor beneath the bed trembled.

The faint, quiet wolf I had lived with since girlhood was gone. In her place, a colossal shadow uncoiled in the dark hollow of my chest. She was immense, silver-white, radiating a presence so heavy it dragged the breath straight out of my lungs.

She opened eyes like molten silver and locked them onto my soul.

Her voice didn't whisper. It struck the inside of my skull like a war drum, ancient and deafening:

*We are not what they named us. Rise.*

The glass shade on the bedside lamp cracked with a sharp *snap*, the fracture shooting across the bulb as raw, crushing pressure slammed down onto the room.
