Chapter 4

Declan brought me the invitation list on the third day, printed and stapled, like a man handing over evidence at a trial he already knew the verdict to.

"Every Alpha in the region," he said. "Silverfang, Duskhollow, Redcliff, Thornwood, six smaller territories besides. He's calling it the Pacific Northwest Pack Alliance Summit. Two weeks from Friday. Ironveil pack house, main hall."

I read the letterhead twice. Ashton's signature at the bottom, looping and confident, the same signature he used on documents he'd never actually read before signing. "An alliance summit," I said. "He's never called an alliance summit in his life. He doesn't know what half these packs export."

"He's not calling it for the alliance." Declan's mouth was a flat line. "My contact in the pack house says he's commissioned ceremonial armor. New. Fitted to his measurements, not yours."

I went still. My armor—my mother's, reforged twice, worn at my own mating ceremony and every formal rite since—had been cut to my body, my shoulders, my height. Ashton had never worn it because it had never fit him, and some quiet, foolish part of me had let that be a private joke between us instead of what it actually was: a warning I'd chosen not to read.

"He means to do it there," I said. "In front of all of them."

"Alpha's Choice ceremony," Declan confirmed. "Word is he's calling it a modernization. A living Alpha's right to name his Luna without the old bloodline formalities." He said the phrase like it tasted bad in his mouth. "He's going to try to crown her in front of every Alpha who might otherwise ask questions about you."

I sat with that for a long moment, turning the invitation list over in my hands. Two weeks. Ashton thought my silence these past days meant surrender. He thought I'd retreated to lick a wound and wait for him to finish rearranging my life without me. He had no idea I'd spent those days building the exact stage he was about to hand me.

"Let him send his invitations," I said.

Elara's contact inside the pack house—one of the younger healers, still loyal, still watching—sent word two days later about the Luna suite. Milani had redone it top to bottom within forty-eight hours of my leaving. Cream and gold now, where I'd had blue. New linens. New everything. She'd apparently told the staff my mother's quilt had been "outdated" and had it removed to storage, which was a small enough cruelty that it shouldn't have mattered, and mattered anyway, more than the affair itself some mornings.

She was introducing herself to the early arrivals as Ashton's true mate—the second-chance bond the Goddess had corrected. I heard she used that exact phrase, more than once, with the practiced ease of someone reciting a line she'd rehearsed in a mirror. She'd started presenting Kohen at these little gatherings, too. Our son, she called him, hand light on his shoulder, and coached him beforehand—Mommy Milani, say hello to the nice wolves—until the words came out of my son's mouth like they belonged to him instead of to her.

Mrs. Ford was helping her rehearse a Luna acceptance speech in the sitting room where I used to review pack ledgers. I pictured it clearly enough that I didn't need anyone to describe it to me: the two of them at the window seat, Mrs. Ford correcting Milani's posture, her cadence, telling her when to pause for effect. And in between, I imagined, small comments dropped into Kohen's hearing like stones into water—your real mother left, your real mother was always busy, your real mother never had time for you the way Mommy Milani does. Small. Steady. Enough to reshape a four-year-old's whole understanding of who had bled for him.

I didn't let myself sit with the image longer than I had to. I had made my decision about what I would do with that grief, and it wasn't going to be spent lying awake at the safehouse imagining the shape of my son's betrayal.

Instead, I called Silverfang.

Alpha Reyes and I had held the border between our territories peacefully for four years, which in this business counted as a genuine friendship. I didn't ask him for warriors. I didn't ask him for anything that could be mistaken for aggression.

"I need witnesses," I told him, my voice even, careful, the voice I used when I wanted a man to hear exactly what I meant and nothing more. "You and your senior wolves. At the Summit. I'm not asking you to take a side, Reyes. I'm asking you to see what happens with your own eyes, so that afterward, no Alpha in this region can claim they didn't know."

There was a pause on the line, long enough that I heard him breathing, weighing it.

"We'll be there," he said finally. "Front row, if your husband doesn't mind."

"He won't even notice you until it's too late to matter," I said, and for the first time in three weeks, something in my chest that wasn't quite a smile moved anyway.
