Chapter 5

Declan didn't ask me if I wanted the loyalty map. He just built it.

I found it on the fourth morning, tucked under the coffee pot where he knew I'd look first—a single folded sheet of paper with two columns and no header. He'd used initials. He always did. Names were traceable; initials were only readable to the people who'd already earned them.

The left column was long. Warriors, most of the border patrol, both accounting leads, the entire kitchen staff, three of the four healers under Elara, the quartermaster, the kennelmaster, the wolf who ran the fleet garage. The wolves who actually kept Ironveil breathing.

The right column was shorter, and every name on it made a certain kind of sense. Mrs. Ford's tea circle. Two social liaisons who'd never patrolled a border in their lives. A cousin of Ashton's who'd been given a title without a job. The pack house sommelier, of all things.

I folded the paper back exactly the way I'd found it and set it under the coffee pot again. Declan came in ten minutes later, saw it hadn't moved, and poured himself a cup without looking at me.

"You already knew," he said.

"I already knew."

He nodded once and drank his coffee standing up.

That afternoon, Ashton posted a photograph to the pack's internal channel—him and Milani at some vineyard tasting, her hand on his forearm, Kohen half-turned toward the camera with a smile that didn't reach his eyes. The caption said something about "building the future." I watched the like counts trickle in. The names that showed up were the same names on Declan's right-hand column. Nothing from the warriors. Nothing from anyone who had ever bled for this pack.

I closed the phone and went to the closet for the box.

I hadn't opened it since the night Declan first saw it. I set it on the kitchen table now, in the flat gray light of a rainy afternoon, and I lifted out the top document with both hands because the paper was old enough to tear along the folds if I wasn't careful.

The language was mine. I'd written it myself, on Salazar's floor, with a puncture wound in my side and my wolf howling somewhere I couldn't reach her. He'd let me draft the terms because he'd assumed I was too far gone to notice what I was writing. I hadn't been.

Section seven. Reinstatement.

*In the event that the debtor materially violates the terms of the bond under which this debt was cleared—including but not limited to the abandonment, rejection, or betrayal of the party who assumed payment—the original obligation shall reinstate in full, and the debtor shall become directly and personally liable to the creditor, without further negotiation, notice, or grace.*

I had written that clause bleeding onto the floor of a rogue king's office because some part of me, even then, had known. Not the details. Not Milani, not the affair, not the five years. But the shape of it. The possibility that a man I nearly died for might, one day, decide the debt was inconvenient to remember.

I'd been twenty-three years old and I had built my own trapdoor under his feet, and I'd forgotten I'd done it until I needed it.

I slid the contract into the formal legal envelope Declan had left me—cream card stock, Salazar's courier seal already printed at the corner, the address line still blank. I sealed it with wax the color of dried blood, the same shade the original bore, and I set it flat on the kitchen table where I could see it every time I walked past.

I didn't address it yet. I would hand it to the courier at the Summit myself, in the same room, in the same hour, that I spoke the rejection.

Declan came in as the light was starting to fail. He saw the envelope. He didn't touch it.

"Forty-eight hours," he said, quiet.

"Forty-eight hours."

Elara arrived the next morning with her bag and a look I didn't like.

She made me sit. She checked the pulse, the eyes, the sternum. Her hand stayed pressed to my chest longer than usual, and when she pulled it back, her fingers were trembling slightly, which was not something Elara's fingers did.

"Your wolf is deeper under than I've ever felt her," she said. "I can barely find her at all."

"I know."

"That's not the strange part." She sat back on her heels and studied me the way she studied a symptom she couldn't name. "Ivy. Your aura is stronger than it was a month ago. Considerably stronger. I've been sitting in this room fighting the urge to lower my eyes for the last ten minutes and I only just noticed I was doing it."

I didn't answer. I'd noticed it too—in Declan yesterday, mid-sentence, his gaze dropping to the table and then jerking back up with a small, startled frown. In Marcus, this morning, pausing halfway through a question as if he'd lost the thread.

"Your wolf can't spend the energy on shifting," Elara said slowly, working it out aloud. "So it's going somewhere else. All of it. Into presence. Into pressure." She looked at me with something between wonder and fear. "Ivy, I don't know what you're going to feel like in that hall. I don't know what the wolves around you are going to feel."

I pressed two fingers to the mark on my neck. It didn't ache anymore. It hummed.

"Good," I said.
