Chapter 3

Marcus read the clause a second time after the sun came up, this time in silence, his finger tracing the old script like he was checking for a trick in the language he himself had drafted five years ago.

"It's clean," he said finally, setting the page down. "Evidentiary threshold is met twice over. Photographs, receipts, the scent article—any one of those alone would hold. Together, no elder in this region could challenge it." He looked up at me over his glasses. "By the letter of this compact, Ivy, the bloodright reverts to you the moment I sign as witness. Sole and undivided. I could do it right now, at this table."

I sat with that for a moment. Twenty minutes ago I would have wanted exactly that—quiet, fast, done, before Ashton or Milani or Mrs. Ford could rearrange the furniture again.

"No," I said.

Declan's eyes cut to me.

"I don't want it done at a kitchen table," I said. "I want it done in front of every Alpha who has ever looked at Ashton and called him my equal." My voice was level. I could feel Declan watching the way it stayed level. "Marcus, I need you to hold this. Don't file it. Don't invoke it. Wait for me to tell you when."

Marcus studied me a long moment, the kind of look old wolves give when they're deciding whether a plan is brave or reckless. "You want witnesses."

"I want a room full of them."

He nodded slowly, and something like approval moved behind his tired eyes. "Then I'll wait."

We turned to the ledgers next. Declan spread the audit sheets across the table, and I pulled Ironveil's revenue figures out of memory the way I always had—quarter by quarter, vendor by vendor, the numbers I'd once recited to bankers without needing a single printed page. I found the first irregularity myself, eighteen months back, a linen supply invoice routed through a company I didn't recognize. I remembered dismissing it. Clerical error, I'd written in the margin of my own notes. I could still see my handwriting in my head, careless and trusting.

"It wasn't clerical," Declan said, sliding a second folder toward me. "That vendor doesn't exist past a mailing address. The mailing address is a UPS box two towns from here. The money moves through it and out again within forty-eight hours, every time, into an account under Milani's maiden name."

"And from there?"

He turned to the last page. A wire transfer log, dates highlighted in yellow. "Coastal territory. Same recipient account, every single time. Six figures over three years."

I looked at the name on the account. Caden Wolfe. I'd never heard it before tonight, and something about seeing it there, plain and unremarkable, made the whole betrayal feel smaller and larger at once—smaller because it had a name, larger because that name meant this had never been about love at all.

"She was never after Ashton," I said quietly.

"No," Declan said. "She was after the accounts he had access to. Ashton just happened to be attached."

I didn't answer. I was thinking about the version of myself who'd read that first invoice and moved on, too tired, too stretched, too certain that the pack's bigger fires needed her attention more. I filed the memory away with the others. There would be time to be furious with myself later. Not tonight.

Elara arrived a little after ten, let in by Declan without a word passing between them, the way people move when they've done this before. She set her bag on the counter and looked at me with the particular gentleness she reserved for bad news.

"Sit," she said.

I sat. She checked my pulse, then my eyes, then pressed her palm flat against my sternum and closed her own eyes, the way she did when she was listening for something under my skin that words couldn't measure.

"Your wolf's retreated further," she said finally. "Further than last month."

"I haven't tried to shift."

"You don't have to try for me to feel it." She opened her eyes. "Ivy, the rejection trauma alone would tax a healthy wolf. Yours isn't healthy. It hasn't been healthy in a long time. If you push much further past this, I'm not confident you can sustain full shift at all. Not once. Not for the Summit, not for anything after it."

"I don't need to shift for what I'm planning."

"You might." Her voice was quiet but it didn't bend. "You're running on will, Ivy. Will isn't a body. It doesn't hold when the body gives out underneath it."

I looked past her, out the small window toward the tree line going gray-gold in the early light. "Keep monitoring. Don't tell anyone. Not the elders, not Declan's warriors, no one."

Elara glanced at Declan, who said nothing, his jaw tight the way it got when he was choosing not to argue in front of me.

"Silence," Elara said, "until you say otherwise."

I nodded, and pressed two fingers to my neck without thinking, and felt only the ordinary ache of a mark that hadn't yet learned it was already dying.
