Chapter 1

The command hit my spine at 7:42 on a Thursday morning, and my legs walked me into the water before my mouth could form the word no.

*Get in, Whitney.*

Jensen's voice came through the mate bond low and layered, that harmonic undertone every wolf in Silverfang was trained from birth to obey. My knees buckled forward instead of back. The gravel of Silver Creek's bank shifted under my boots, and then there was no bank, only the shock of ice water climbing my thighs, my ribs, my throat.

I could not swim. He knew I could not swim.

"A Luna needs to be forged," he said to the assembled warriors on the shore. His voice carried, warm and patient, the voice of a man teaching a lesson. "Cold water. Fast current. This is what resilience looks like."

The rapids took me at the second step. My head went under. The cold was not cold—it was a hand around my lungs, squeezing. I clawed at the surface and the current turned me, and I saw the sky in fractured pieces between the white foam, and above that, on the bank, Jensen's face. Calm. Watching.

I felt Jessica before I saw her. Jasmine drifted across the water, sweet and cloying, layered against Jensen's scent like a second skin.

Someone dragged me out by the collar of my shirt. Gamma Holt, I think. He set me on the stones and I coughed creek water onto my own boots and could not stop shaking. My mark—the one Jensen had bitten into the curve of my neck six years ago—pulsed once, ice-cold, and then went strange and quiet, like a heart skipping.

Inside me, my wolf shuddered. She had never been loud. Now she was less than that. She curled small, and the small got smaller.

"A Luna who cannot endure the cold," Jensen said, still to the pack and not to me, "is a liability."

He turned and walked away. Jessica walked at his elbow.

---

I dripped down the corridor of the pack house and did not stop to change. I found Marcus Webb in the Beta office, and when he looked up from his ledger, his face did the thing faces do when they cannot decide between pity and panic.

"Marcus." My voice sounded like someone else's. Formal. Distant. The way I get when a thing hurts too much to be spoken plainly. "I am filing a formal severance request. Effective tonight."

He set down his pen. "Whitney—"

"Through proper channels," I said. "Please."

Even then. Even soaked through and shaking, with my mark going hollow on my neck. I still could not conceive of walking out on my own authority. I still asked permission.

That was the last time I ever would.

---

The alliance celebration was already lit when they brought me down. Every torch in the hall, every banner I had drafted the language for, every allied delegate whose loyalty I had personally negotiated. Jensen stood on the dais in his ceremonial leathers.

He saw me at the door. He smiled.

"Before we drink," he said, and the pack quieted, "there is one matter."

I knew, in the second before he opened his mouth, what he was going to do.

"I, Jensen Morrison, Alpha of the Silverfang Pack, reject you, Whitney Powell, as my mate and Luna. I sever the bond between us. I release you from my protection, my name, and my pack."

Alpha tone poured through every syllable.

The mark on my neck went cold, then colder, then empty—like a door closing on an empty room. Inside my chest, where my wolf had lived for twenty-four years, something collapsed inward and did not push back up. I hit the floor on my knees. My palms slapped stone. The taste of copper filled my mouth.

Jessica stepped up beside him. Her jasmine layered over his scent like she had rehearsed the distance.

I got up.

Blood was tracking down my collarbone from the fading mark. I did not touch it. I looked at Jensen—really looked, the way I had never let myself look in six years—and I saw a small man in expensive leathers standing on a stage I had built.

"I, Whitney Powell," I said, and my voice did not shake, "accept your rejection."

I walked out. I took nothing from the chamber that had been mine except my field notebook off the desk by the door—every map, every alliance, every strategy he had ever filed under his own name, in my own shorthand, in my own hand. The wolf inside me did not howl. She did not move. The silence where she had been was absolute.

I did not look back.

On the road to the border, I passed the Silver Creek trailhead. Still water pooled at the mouth of the trail. My pulse jumped so hard I tasted it.

I looked at the water for three seconds.

Then I stepped around it, and I kept walking, and behind me in the pack house Jessica's laugh rose through an open window—bright, jasmine-sweet, already practicing the shape of Luna.
