Chapter 2

The border smelled like rain and old pine needles. I crossed the scent line at midnight, my boots crunching frost that had settled into the dead grass. My field notebook was tucked under my arm. My clothes were still damp from the creek. The mark on my neck was a cold, hollow scar.

I did not expect to see her.

Jessica stood at the edge of the tree line, backlit by the moon, her jasmine scent drifting across the clearing like smoke. She was not performing. Her shoulders were square. Her face was calm. She looked at me the way someone looks at a problem they have already solved.

"Whitney," she said. Her voice was flat. No warmth. No breathless deference. Just my name, stated like a fact.

I stopped walking. My pulse kicked once, hard, against my ribs.

"I thought you'd want to know," she said, "before you left."

I did not answer. My throat was too tight.

She stepped closer. The jasmine thickened. "Your brother. Ledger." She tilted her head slightly, like she was remembering something pleasant. "The rogue ambush. Three weeks ago. He sent a distress call through the mind-link."

My breath stopped.

"I received it," Jessica said. Her tone did not change. "I acknowledged it. I heard him screaming. And then I severed the connection."

The world went very still. The trees. The frost. The air in my lungs.

"He was calling for help," she continued, "and I let him die. Because his death destabilized you. And that accelerated Jensen's dependence on me. It was efficient."

Something inside me cracked open.

I did not remember crossing the distance between us. I only remembered my hands on her throat, my weight slamming her backward into the dirt, her jasmine scent choking me as I drove my knee into her ribs. She gasped. I hit her again. Blood welled at the corner of her mouth.

"You let him die," I said. My voice was not my voice. It was something raw and animal and broken. "You heard him. You heard him and you—"

She smiled. Blood on her teeth. "I did."

I pulled back my fist. I was going to break her face. I was going to break everything.

Then Jensen's scent hit me—pine and leather and Alpha dominance—and his voice cut through the clearing like a blade.

"Whitney. Stop."

I froze. Not because I wanted to. Because the Alpha tone in his voice locked my muscles in place, mid-strike, my fist still raised.

He stepped out of the trees. His eyes were cold. Jessica made a small, theatrical sound—half gasp, half whimper—and went limp beneath me, her head lolling to one side like she had fainted.

I tried to stand. My legs would not move.

Jensen walked closer. His aura rolled out ahead of him, a crushing biological wall of dominance that pressed down on my shoulders, my spine, my lungs. I had no wolf to answer it. The hollow place inside me where she had lived stayed silent.

"Get off her," he said quietly.

My body obeyed before my mind could catch up. I stumbled backward. My knees hit the dirt. The pressure of his aura pinned me flat, my palms scraping frost and stone.

Jensen crouched beside Jessica. He touched her face gently, his fingers brushing the blood at her mouth. "Are you hurt?"

She blinked up at him, her eyes wide and wet. "I just wanted to say goodbye," she whispered. "I didn't think she'd—"

"Shh." He lifted her to her feet, his arm around her waist. She leaned into him, trembling.

I could not move. The weight of his Alpha presence held me down like a hand on the back of my neck.

Jensen looked at me. His face was calm. Almost bored.

"You have until dawn," he said. "If you are still on Silverfang's borders by sunrise, I will have you declared rogue before every pack in the region. No territory will shelter you. No Alpha will hear your name without knowing what you are."

I tried to speak. My throat closed.

"Go," he said.

The aura lifted. I gasped, dragging air into my lungs. My hands were shaking. My vision blurred at the edges.

Jensen turned away, Jessica still tucked against his side. They walked back toward the tree line. Her jasmine drifted behind them, layered over his scent like a second skin.

I stayed on the ground. My palms were scraped raw. Blood from the fading mark had dried on my collarbone. Inside the hollow place where my wolf should have been, something shifted.

A growl.

Low. Involuntary. Unmistakably wolfish.

It rose in my throat without permission, a sound I had not made since the rejection. It did not free me. It did not give me strength. But it was there.

I pressed my hand to my chest. My heart was pounding. The growl faded, but the echo of it stayed, vibrating somewhere deep in my ribs.

I looked at the trees where Jensen and Jessica had disappeared. Then I looked down at my scraped palms, at the dirt under my nails, at the blood on my shirt.

Ledger had called for help. She had heard him. She had let him die.

I got to my feet. My legs were unsteady, but they held.

I picked up my field notebook from where it had fallen in the dirt. I brushed the frost off the cover. Inside were six years of strategies, alliances, territorial campaigns—every map Jensen had ever filed under his own name, written in my own hand.

I turned my back on Silverfang's border.

And I walked into the dark.
