Chapter 2

I went to work on Wednesday.

I wore a gray suit. I sat in the conference room with four clients from a pharmaceutical distributor and walked them through a supply chain audit. My slides were clean. My voice was steady. I answered questions about inventory turnover and fulfillment timelines. No one asked if I was okay. There was no reason to. I looked exactly like I always did.

Beckham sent flowers Thursday morning.

They arrived at the apartment in a tall glass vase. White roses. Expensive ones. The card said: *Take your time. I know this is a lot. We'll figure it out.*

I carried the vase down to the lobby and asked the doorman if there was a hospital nearby. He pointed me two blocks west. I walked the arrangement over myself and left it at the reception desk. The woman behind the counter smiled and said someone on the fourth floor would love them.

I didn't feel good about it. I didn't feel anything.

Beckham texted that night. *Did you get the flowers?*

I didn't answer.

He texted again Friday. *I understand you need space. Call me when you're ready to talk.*

I put the phone face down on the kitchen counter and made a list. Attorney. Private investigator. Margaret's house key. Bank statements going back three years. I wrote it all in the small notebook I kept for grocery lists. My handwriting looked normal.

Saturday morning, I had an intake meeting with Victor Haines in his Midtown office. He was the attorney Nyla's cousin recommended. The kind of man who billed in six-minute increments and didn't pretend to care about your feelings.

I gave him the separation agreement Beckham had signed. I gave him three years of joint account statements. I gave him the dates Beckham claimed to be in Johannesburg and the credit card charges that proved he was in Jersey City.

"How fast can you move?" I asked.

Victor looked at me over his reading glasses. "Thirty days is standard. But if you want this airtight, we use the time. We document everything. We don't leave him a single crack to slip through."

"Then document everything."

He slid a retainer agreement across the desk. I signed it. He called his investigator before I left the building.

I drove to Brooklyn that afternoon. I had paperwork to sign at the hospital. Release forms. Personal effects. They gave me a plastic bag with my mother's wedding ring inside a small envelope.

I didn't go to her house. Not yet. I sat in the hospital parking lot with the bag in my lap and stared at the dashboard. The ring was cold through the plastic.

Beckham called Sunday evening. I let it go to voicemail. He didn't leave a message.

Monday, I went back to work. Another client meeting. Another presentation. My manager complimented my turnaround time on the last report. I thanked her and went back to my desk.

Tuesday afternoon, I was in a coffee shop near the office when my phone rang. Unknown number. Brooklyn area code.

I answered.

"Ms. Stone?" The voice was male. Calm. Official. "This is Brooklyn General Hospital. I'm calling about Margaret Stone."

I already knew. I don't know how, but I knew before he said it.

"She was brought in by ambulance this morning. A neighbor called 911. I'm very sorry, Ms. Stone. She didn't make it."

I asked what happened.

"Cardiac arrest. She was alone when it happened. The paramedics did everything they could."

I thanked him. I ended the call. I sat in the coffee shop with my hands flat on the table and my coffee going cold in front of me.

Someone asked if I was okay. I said yes. I stood up. I left my coffee on the table.

I drove to Brooklyn General. I identified her body in a small white room with fluorescent lights that buzzed. She looked smaller than I remembered. Her hands were folded on top of the sheet. I touched her fingers once. They were cool.

A nurse asked if I needed to sit down. I said no. I signed the forms they gave me. I walked back to my car.

I sat in the hospital parking lot for twenty minutes. I didn't cry. I didn't call anyone. I just sat there with my hands on the steering wheel and the engine off.

Then I drove to my mother's house.

The door was unlocked. The neighbor must have left it open for the paramedics. I stepped inside. The living room looked exactly the way it always did. The couch. The bookshelf. The framed photo of the two of us from my college graduation.

There was a coffee cup on the side table. Still half full. Sunday's paper folded on the armrest.

I walked into the kitchen. Two more cups in the sink. A dish towel draped over the faucet.

I sat down at the kitchen table. The same table where she used to call me every Sunday morning. The same table where I used to do homework in high school while she made dinner.

I pulled out my phone. I opened the notes app. I started a new list.

*Victor — asset freeze. Private investigator — Jersey City apartment records. Bank statements — offshore transfers. Restraining order paperwork. Court date confirmation.*

I kept writing.

Grief and power. Not grief and paralysis.

I chose power.
