Chapter 2

The penthouse was silent when I closed my eyes, but when I opened them again, the world had ended. Not with a scream or a crash, but with the sound of champagne glasses clinking and laughter that didn't belong to me.

I woke to the sound of my own life being destroyed.

Through the haze of pain medication, I could hear them from the hospital bed. Voices drifted up from the floor below, muffled by the thick walls but unmistakable. Brock's laugh, sharp and cruel. Teagan's breathy giggle, the sound that used to make my skin crawl and now made my heart stop.

They were in my home. In my sanctuary.

I reached for my phone with trembling hands and dialed the doorman. "Mr. Chen, is someone watching the penthouse?"

"Mrs. Hansen, your husband said it was fine, that you were out of town. He has a group of friends over."

Friends. In the home I'd made perfect for the baby I was fighting to save.

I closed my eyes and let the phone slip from my fingers.

Somewhere across the city, in the space that should have been mine, someone stumbled into my bedroom. I knew it like I knew my own heartbeat. Heavy footsteps, unfamiliar, careless.

"What's this old thing?" A woman's voice, slurred and curious. "Looks expensive."

I knew what she was looking at. My mother's jewelry box. The last thing I had of her, a delicate antique of polished rosewood and brass inlays, passed down through generations of Long women. I'd kept it on the highest shelf of my closet, wrapped in silk, too precious to use but too sacred to lock away.

"It's probably worth something," another voice said. Brock's voice. "Check inside."

The sound of hinges creaking. The rustle of tissue paper.

"Nothing but old junk. Some costume jewelry, I think?" Teagan's voice now, bored and dismissive. "God, she's so sentimental."

The crash came next.

Not a big crash. Not the kind that happens in movies. Just the quiet, final sound of wood splintering against marble.

I pressed my hand to my mouth to keep from screaming.

"Oops," Teagan said, and she laughed. "Sorry, not sorry."

I heard the sound of porcelain shards skittering across the floor. Someone's heel came down hard, grinding something precious into dust.

"Leave it," Brock said. "Someone will clean it up. Let's get back to the party."

But Teagan's voice came closer, interested now. "Look at this piece. It's actually kind of pretty."

She was talking about the porcelain figurine. My mother's favorite. A ballerina in a pale blue tutu, frozen in a perfect arabesque. I'd played with it as a child, held it in my hands, imagined my mother doing the same.

"It's trash now," Teagan said, and I could hear the smile in her voice. "Like everything else she cares about."

The sound of the figurine hitting the trash can. The finality of it.

I didn't cry. Something inside me had gone cold, gone still, like a lake freezing over in winter.

The door to my hospital room opened, and I looked up.

Everett Russell stood in the doorway, and the world stopped spinning.

He looked exactly the same as I remembered, and completely different. Still tall, still composed, but there was something in his eyes now that hadn't been there before. Something fierce and protective and absolutely certain.

"Capri," he said, and my name in his mouth sounded like a prayer.

He didn't rush to me. He didn't crowd me or demand explanations. He simply moved to the chair beside my bed and sat down, his back straight, his hands folded in his lap.

"I'm here now," he said. "Tell me what you need."

I looked at him, really looked at him, and saw the truth. He'd been waiting. All this time, while I'd been destroying myself for a man who was destroying me, Everett had been waiting.

"My mother's jewelry box," I whispered. "They broke it."

Something flickered across his face, quick and dark. "I know. I heard."

He'd heard everything. Somehow, impossibly, he'd heard the destruction of my past from wherever he'd been.

"What else?" he asked. "What else do you need?"

I thought about the baby, fighting to survive inside me. I thought about the life I'd built, the lies I'd believed, the love I'd wasted.

"Everything," I said. "I need everything."

Everett nodded once, decisively. "Then that's what you'll have."

He reached into his jacket and pulled out a phone, different from the one he'd used to answer my call. "Victor," he said into it, "I need you to trace every Hansen transaction from the last three years. Every account, every shell company, every wire transfer. I need it by tomorrow."

He hung up and looked at me. "The first piece," he said. "There will be more."

I closed my eyes and let myself feel, for the first time in years, the weight of being truly, completely safe.

Somewhere across the city, Teagan Silva was probably laughing, probably raising another glass to her victory.

She had no idea what was coming for her.

Neither did Brock.

Neither did I, really. But Everett did, and that was enough.
