Chapter 3

The penthouse smelled wrong when I came home. Not like smoke or perfume or anything obvious. Just wrong. Like someone had moved through my space and left invisible fingerprints on everything I owned.

Brock stood in the living room, hands in his pockets, expression carefully arranged into something that might pass for remorse if you didn't know him. "Babe," he said. "Things got a little out of hand."

I didn't answer. My eyes had already found it.

The jewelry box lay on the marble floor near the bedroom door, split open like something that had fallen from a great height. Splinters of rosewood scattered across the white stone. The brass hinges twisted at impossible angles. And there, ground into the grout between tiles, were fragments of hand-painted porcelain that had once been my mother's ballerina.

I walked past Brock without looking at him.

"Capri, I'm sorry, okay? Some people came over, and someone knocked it off the shelf by accident. I'll buy you a new one."

I knelt on the marble. The cold bit through my dress. My knees pressed against shards of wood and I didn't move. I reached out and picked up a single piece of porcelain, no bigger than my thumbnail. Blue tulle. Part of the ballerina's skirt.

"Did you hear me?" Brock's voice had an edge now. "I said I'll replace it."

I turned the fragment over in my palm. The paint was so delicate. My mother had held this same figurine when she was a girl. Her mother before her. Four generations of Long women, and now it was dust.

"You can't replace it," I said quietly.

Movement in the doorway caught my eye. Teagan stood there, arms crossed, watching. She wore one of those little smirks she thought I couldn't see. The kind that said *I win*.

I looked at her. Really looked. And the smirk faltered.

Something in my face had changed. I could feel it, the way you feel a door lock behind you. Final. Irreversible.

"Capri, come on." Brock's voice turned wheedling. "Don't be like this. It was an accident."

I stood slowly, still holding the porcelain shard. My hand didn't shake. That surprised me. Everything inside felt very still, very cold, like the moment before a storm when the air goes dead and you know something terrible is coming.

"Get out," I said.

Brock blinked. "What?"

"Both of you. Get out of my home."

Teagan's smirk vanished completely. She pushed off the doorframe, suddenly alert. "Brock, maybe we should—"

"This is my home too," Brock said, but his voice cracked on the last word.

I looked at him. At this man I'd given up everything for. At the stranger wearing his face.

"No," I said. "It's not."

I walked past them both, past the wreckage of my mother's memory, and locked myself in the bathroom.

---

The marble counter was cold under my palms. I set the porcelain shard down carefully, precisely, in the exact center. Then I opened my laptop.

My hands moved without conscious thought, pulling up files I'd been too afraid to examine before. Bank statements from the dowry trust. Transfer records. Emails between Brock and his father that I'd seen in passing and dismissed as boring business talk.

But they weren't boring. Not when you looked close.

There. A wire transfer, two months after the wedding. Three hundred thousand dollars, moved from the Long family trust to an LLC I didn't recognize. Another one three weeks later. Then another.

I clicked through to the marriage certificate filing. Pulled up the digital copy I'd signed at City Hall. The date was right. The signatures looked right.

But something about the file metadata was wrong. The creation date didn't match the filing date. Someone had edited this document after the fact.

I opened a new window and typed in the LLC name from the transfer records. The registration came up immediately. Filed six months before our wedding. Owned by Brock Hansen and Teagan Silva.

My vision went white at the edges.

They'd planned this. Before the proposal, before the ring, before any of it. They'd set up a company to funnel my family's money. They'd doctored the marriage paperwork. Every smile, every touch, every whispered *I love you* had been part of a script.

I clicked through more files. Found emails between Brock and Teagan going back years. Not love letters. Business correspondence. Cold. Transactional. Planning how to maximize the payout from the Long family trust. Discussing which assets to target first.

One email from Teagan, dated three weeks ago: *The old lady's jewelry box is worth at least 50K at auction. Get rid of it before she thinks to have it appraised.*

Brock's reply: *Will handle it.*

I stared at the screen until the words blurred.

They hadn't broken my mother's jewelry box by accident. They'd destroyed it on purpose. To erase evidence. To cover their tracks.

I saved everything to a secure cloud drive. Then I opened a new document and began making a list. Every file I needed. Every person who could verify what I'd found. Every step that would have to happen in exactly the right order.

Outside the bathroom door, I heard Brock's voice, muffled and uncertain. "Babe? You okay in there?"

I didn't answer. The woman he'd married would have answered. Would have opened the door, swallowed her hurt, tried to make peace.

But that woman died on a hospital bed while her husband chose his mistress over his poisoned wife.

I looked at my reflection in the mirror. My face was pale, composed, absolutely calm. My eyes looked different. Harder. Colder.

I picked up my phone and texted Everett: *I found it. The whole thing. I need Victor's full report by tomorrow.*

His reply came in seconds: *You'll have it. Are you safe?*

I looked at the bathroom door. At the lock that wouldn't hold if Brock decided to force it. At the window that didn't open wide enough to climb through.

*For now,* I typed. *But not for long.*

*I'm sending someone,* Everett replied. *Don't open the door for anyone but Marcus. He'll be there in twenty minutes.*

I set the phone down and looked at the porcelain shard one more time. The last piece of my mother I'd ever hold.

Then I wrapped it in tissue paper and put it in my pocket, close to my heart, and began to plan the end of Brock Hansen's world.
