Chapter 1

The waiting room at Manhattan General smelled like antiseptic and cold coffee. I sat alone in a paper gown, my hand resting on the small curve of my belly, and checked my phone one more time.

**Brock:** Sorry babe, stuck in a meeting. You'll be fine on your own, right? Text me after.

I stared at the screen until the words blurred. Seven months pregnant, and my husband couldn't sit through a twenty-minute checkup. I told myself it didn't matter. I told myself a lot of things lately.

That was when I saw her.

Teagan Silva stood near the nurses' station, in a soft cashmere coat, clutching a paper cup of tea like she belonged there. She'd been Brock's best friend since they were kids — that's what he always said, like the word *friend* explained away every late-night phone call, every inside joke I wasn't part of.

"Capri!" She smiled, wide and warm, the kind of smile that never touched her eyes. "I heard you had an appointment today. I was so worried, I had to come check on you."

"That's sweet of you," I said. It wasn't. Something cold slid down the back of my neck, quiet and quick, like a draft from a door I hadn't noticed was open. I didn't have words for it yet. I just knew I didn't want her near me.

"Ms. Long?" A nurse appeared, clipboard in hand. "We're ready for you."

I left Teagan standing there, smiling after me.

The exam went fine. Strong heartbeat, good growth, Dr. Fitzgerald's calm voice reading numbers off a screen. I lay back on the paper-covered table and let myself believe, for ten minutes, that everything was okay.

Afterward, they moved me to a recovery room to rest before discharge — routine, they said, for the mild dizziness I'd mentioned. I must have dozed. When I woke, my prenatal vitamins sat on the rolling tray beside a small paper cup of water, exactly where the nurse always left them.

I didn't think twice. I never had a reason to.

I tipped the pills into my mouth and swallowed.

The burn hit before I even set the cup down. It tore up my throat like acid, like something alive clawing its way out of me. I gagged, choked, my whole body convulsing forward. The smell hit next — sharp, animal, wrong — and I understood, in some distant part of my mind, that whatever I'd just swallowed was not medicine.

I screamed. Or tried to. It came out as a wet, broken sound.

Nurses flooded the room. Someone shouted for a doctor. Hands were on me, tilting my head, someone's voice saying *stay with us, Capri, stay with us* while another voice called for an emergency gastric lavage. I remember the tube. I remember the tears streaming sideways into my hair because I couldn't turn my head. I remember thinking, over and over, *please, not the baby, please not the baby.*

Brock showed up an hour later. Not running. Walking, actually — unhurried, jaw tight with irritation rather than fear.

"What happened," he said. Not even a question.

I was still hooked to an IV, my throat raw, my voice barely a whisper. "Someone switched my vitamins. Brock, someone tried to — "

"Teagan told me you accused her of something at the nurses' station." His voice was flat, hard. "You embarrassed her. In public."

"I didn't accuse her of anything, I just — "

His hand closed around my arm and shoved me back against the wall rail, the IV line yanking taut. "She came to check on you out of the goodness of her heart, and you humiliated her. Do you have any idea how that looks?"

"Brock, I almost lost the baby."

"Don't be dramatic." He straightened his jacket, glancing at the door like he couldn't wait to leave. "I'm taking Teagan to dinner. She's shaken up because of you. Text me when you're discharged."

He walked out. He didn't look back.

I lay there alone after that, staring at the ceiling tiles, counting the little holes in the foam because it gave my mind somewhere to go besides the truth. My throat throbbed. My hands wouldn't stop shaking.

And somewhere behind my eyes, something shifted. Not tears. Something colder. Something final.

I reached for my phone with a hand that barely felt like mine, and scrolled — past Brock, past Lucy, past six years of contacts I hadn't touched — until I found a name I hadn't dialed since I was twenty-two years old.

**Everett Russell.**

I pressed call before I could talk myself out of it. It rang once. Twice.

"Capri." His voice was low, steady, like he'd been waiting years just to say my name again.

I closed my eyes. "Let's get married. Next week."

Two seconds of silence. Then, no hesitation at all.

"Tell me where you are. I'm coming."
