Chapter 5

The gift bag was pale pink. Tissue paper folded just so, a small ribbon tied at the handle. The duty nurse held the door open with a smile.

I watched Jazmine Rivera walk into my room like she owned the square footage.

She was exactly what I'd pieced together from the photos. Dark hair, straight, expensive. The kind of woman who moved through a space and let the space adjust around her. She set the gift bag on the bedside table without asking, pulled the chair close, and sat down.

'I just wanted to check on you,' she said. Her voice was warm. Practiced. 'This whole thing has been so awful.'

I said nothing. My hands lay in their metal frames on either side of me. I kept my eyes on her face.

She lasted about forty-five seconds on the performance before she dropped it.

She pulled out her phone. Started swiping.

'I thought you should see these,' she said. 'I think you deserve to know the truth.'

She held the screen toward me. A restaurant I'd never been to. Dalton's hand on the small of her back. His face turned toward hers, laughing—open, easy, unguarded. The laugh I remembered from the beginning. The one I hadn't seen in years.

She swiped again. A hotel lobby. His office, late at night, the city lights behind them. Her head on his shoulder. His arm around her, loose and comfortable, the way you hold something you're sure of.

She kept swiping.

'Over a year,' she said, conversationally. 'In case you were wondering how long.'

I watched the photos scroll past. I felt something, but it wasn't what she was hoping for. It was quieter than that. It was the specific feeling of a diagnosis confirming what you already knew.

'He talks about you, you know.' She tilted her head. 'He says you're cold. Boring. That living with you is like living with a very efficient housekeeper.' A small smile. 'His words, not mine.'

She leaned forward. Close enough that I could see her lipstick was perfect.

'He's already hired an attorney for my sister. Top criminal defense. Janelle won't see a single charge.' She paused to let that land. 'He's spending a fortune. Because he loves me. You're just the old model, sweetie.' She stood, smoothed her jacket. 'Time for an upgrade.'

She left the gift bag on the table.

I listened to her footsteps go down the corridor. The squeak of the fire door. Silence.

Then I moved my elbow to my phone.

I had one number in mind. I hadn't dialed it in ten years. I found it anyway, because I'd never deleted it. Because some part of me had always known this call was coming.

It rang twice.

'Sara.'

Dr. Eleanor Howard's voice was exactly the same. Warm. Unhurried. Like she had all the time in the world and had been saving it specifically for this.

'Eleanor.' I kept my voice even. The voice I used when everything was going wrong in the OR and I needed the room to stay calm. 'Is that position still available?'

A pause. Not a long one.

'I've been keeping your spot warm,' she said. 'I always knew you'd call.'

I closed my eyes.

For the first time since the concrete floor of the parking garage, something in my chest came loose. Not much. Just enough.

'I'll need a few months,' I said. 'My hands—'

'I know. I heard.' Her voice was steady. 'We'll make it work, Sara. I have someone in London. Best hand reconstruction specialist I've ever seen. I'll send you his information tonight.'

'Thank you,' I said.

Two words. They didn't cover it. She knew that.

'Don't thank me yet,' she said. 'Get better first. Then come show the world what they've been missing.'

I hung up. Lay there for a moment, staring at the acoustic tiles.

Then I got back to work.

Marcus Webb came the next afternoon. A colleague had given me his name with a single sentence: 'He doesn't lose.' He was compact, efficient, with the kind of stillness that meant he was always thinking three steps ahead. He sat down, opened his briefcase, and didn't waste either of our time.

I walked him through everything. Ten years of financial records. My salary carrying us through Dalton's lean years. My name on the lease, the utilities, the social calendar that built his network. Social media archives. Phone records. The police report from the garage, timestamped. Chloe's written statement. The intake form with Jazmine Rivera listed as Janelle's emergency contact.

He read in silence. Turned pages. Read some more.

Finally he looked up.

'He doesn't have a single card left to play,' he said, 'that you haven't already documented.'

I nodded once.

Good.

Jazmine had walked into this room believing she was finishing something. She'd shown me the photos like they were a weapon. Like I would shatter.

What she'd actually done was walk in here and hand me the last piece of evidence I needed.

I looked down at my hands in their metal frames. Broken. Pinned. Still mine.

She thought she'd won.

She had no idea the game had just started.

Gideon Combs stood in the wreckage, a man in a frayed trench coat and grime-caked boots, looking like a stain on a pristine canvas. He wasn't there to object; he was there to enforce a "Legacy Pact," coldly informing the bride that her debt to a dead man hadn't been fulfilled and she didn't get to walk away. In seconds, the ballroom turned into a butchery as Gideon dismantled elite bodyguards with nothing but a broken wine bottle, eventually sending the groom flying into a tower of shattering champagne glass. When the military arrived, the room expected a firing squad, but instead, a four-star General snapped a sharp salute to the "vagrant," calling him a national asset. My family, the Singletons, saw this as a threat rather than a salvation; when I chose to stand by Gideon, my own grandmother stripped me of my keys, my cards, and my inheritance, casting me out into the pouring rain. I couldn't wrap my head around why the world's most powerful men trembled at the mention of Gideon's mentor, or what secret was etched into the black iron ring on his finger. I had traded my billionaire lifestyle for a man who looked like a drifter but fought like a god, and I had no idea if he was my protector or my ultimate ruin. As we stood on the sidewalk with nothing but twelve dollars and the clothes on our backs, Gideon's phone buzzed with a half-million-dollar bounty already active on the dark web.
