Chapter 4

Nova arrived at eight in the morning.

I heard the doorbell from the spare room. Then her voice in the foyer, sharp and clear. "Where is she?"

Brock said something I couldn't make out. Nova's footsteps came up the stairs fast.

She pushed open the door. Stopped. Looked around the small room—the narrow bed, the dusty window, my clothes crammed into the tiny closet.

"Jesus, Mom." Her voice cracked.

I stood up from the bed. "You didn't have to come."

"Yes, I did." She crossed the room. Hugged me hard. Her arms were strong. She smelled like coffee and the lavender soap she'd used since college.

I held on. Just for a moment. Then I stepped back.

"Let me show you something," I said.

I walked her down the hall. Opened the door to the guest suite.

Julissa's things were everywhere. Designer luggage spread across the floor. Shoes lined up by the window. Silk robes on the bed—including mine. Makeup covered the dresser. The room smelled like expensive perfume.

Nova stared. Her jaw tightened.

"She's been here two weeks," I said quietly.

Nova turned. Walked back downstairs. I followed.

Brock and Ryan were in the kitchen. Julissa sat at the island in a cashmere sweater, drinking coffee. Millie stood by the sink, looking uncomfortable.

Nova stopped in the doorway. Looked at each of them.

"Nova," Ryan said. "You need to understand—"

"Understand what?" Her voice was level. Dangerous.

"Mom's being unreasonable. She can't just demand half of everything. Dad built this life—"

"Dad built this life?" Nova stepped forward. "Mom paid for your college. She managed every bill in this house for thirty years. She raised you while Dad worked late and played golf on Saturdays. What exactly did Dad build?"

Ryan's face flushed. "You don't know what you're talking about. You left. You've been in LA for years—"

"I left because I couldn't stand watching her disappear." Nova's voice rose. "And now you've pushed her into a spare room so Dad's girlfriend can eat gluten-free pancakes in her bathrobe. You want to talk about reasonable?"

"This doesn't concern you," Brock said. He stood up. "This is between me and your mother."

"It concerns me when you treat her like a housekeeper." Nova turned to Ryan. "And it concerns me when my brother chooses his career over his own mother."

Ryan stepped forward. "I'm trying to make partner. Julissa has connections. Real connections. She's introducing me to people who can—"

The slap was fast. Clean. Nova's hand connected with Ryan's cheek. The sound cracked through the kitchen.

Ryan stumbled back. His hand flew to his face. A red mark bloomed across his skin.

The kitchen went silent.

"You pushed our mother out of her own house," Nova said. Her voice was quiet now. Steady. "So your father's girlfriend could have space. You told her to leave for the afternoon. You made her eat dinner alone in a spare room while you entertained colleagues downstairs. Don't talk to me about reasonable."

Ryan stared at her. His mouth opened. Nothing came out.

Millie looked away.

Julissa set down her coffee cup carefully. "Nova, I think you're misunderstanding—"

"I'm not talking to you," Nova said without looking at her.

She turned to me. "Get your things. We're leaving."

"Nova—" Brock started.

"I'm not talking to you either."

She took my arm. Led me upstairs.

In the spare room, she moved fast. Pulled my suitcase from the closet. Started packing. My clothes. My shoes. The worn journal I'd kept since my twenties.

"The documents," I said. "In the desk drawer."

She grabbed them. The bank statements. The property records. The spreadsheets. Everything I'd been collecting.

"Jewelry?" she asked.

"Top drawer. The wooden box."

She found it. My mother's pearls. The earrings from my grandmother. She tucked the box into the suitcase.

Ten minutes. That's all it took. Ten minutes to pack thirty years.

Nova zipped the suitcase. Picked it up. Wrapped her other arm around my shoulders.

We walked downstairs together.

They were all still in the kitchen. Frozen. Watching.

I looked at Brock. Then at Ryan. I didn't say anything. There was nothing left to say.

Nova opened the front door. We stepped outside.

The morning air was cool. Clear. The street was quiet.

We walked down the steps. Nova loaded the suitcase into her rental car. Opened the passenger door for me.

I climbed in. She closed the door. Walked around to the driver's side.

I looked up at the brownstone. The windows I'd cleaned. The steps I'd swept. The door I'd opened ten thousand times.

Nova started the engine.

I didn't look back again.

The hotel was small. Boutique. In the West Village. Nova checked us in. Carried my suitcase upstairs.

The room was bright. Clean. A queen bed with white sheets. A window overlooking a tree-lined street.

"I'm calling Diana Park," Nova said. "Setting up a meeting for tomorrow."

I nodded. Sat on the bed.

Nova pulled out her laptop. Started typing. Her fingers moved fast across the keyboard.

"What are you doing?" I asked.

"Research." She didn't look up. "Julissa Reed. If she's got connections, they'll show up. SEC filings. Business registrations. Something."

She worked for an hour. I unpacked slowly. Hung my dresses in the closet. Put my mother's jewelry box on the dresser.

Nova stopped typing. Stared at the screen.

"Mom," she said quietly.

"What?"

"There's nothing here."

I walked over. Looked at the screen.

Julissa's LinkedIn profile. Impressive. Polished. Venture capital. Advisory boards. Portfolio companies.

Nova clicked on the company names. Half the links were broken. The others led to generic websites. No real information. No SEC filings. No registered addresses.

"She's lying," Nova said.

I stared at the screen. "You're sure?"

"I'm sure." She opened a new tab. Started typing again. "I'm going to find out who she really is."

She worked until midnight. I lay on the bed and watched her. The blue light from the laptop lit her face. She looked like me at her age. Determined. Focused.

Finally, she closed the laptop. Rubbed her eyes.

"I need more time," she said. "But I'll get it. Every lie. Every fake credential. Everything."

"Nova—"

"They humiliated you, Mom." Her voice was fierce. "In front of everyone. In your own house. I'm not letting them get away with it."

I looked at my daughter. My fierce, beautiful daughter.

"Thank you," I said quietly.

She came over. Sat beside me on the bed. Took my hand.

"You did the right thing," she said. "Leaving. Filing. All of it."

I nodded. My throat was tight.

"I know," I said.

And I did. For the first time in thirty years, I knew.
