Chapter 5

The brownstone started falling apart on day three.

I didn't see it. Nova told me. She'd driven by that morning—parked across the street, watched through the windows. She came back to the hotel with her jaw tight.

"The living room's been redecorated," she said. "New curtains. Different furniture arrangement. And the kitchen—Mom, there were dishes everywhere."

I set down my coffee. "Everywhere?"

"Piled in the sink. On the counters. She's not cleaning up after herself."

I thought about the kitchen I'd maintained for thirty years. The counters I wiped down every night. The dishes I washed before bed so the morning would start clean.

"Brock will handle it," I said.

Nova laughed. It wasn't a happy sound. "Brock doesn't know where the dish soap is kept."

She was right. He didn't.

***

Diana Park called that afternoon. Her voice was brisk. Professional.

"Brock's attorney filed a motion to dispute the property valuation," she said. "They're claiming the Hamptons house is worth significantly less than your appraisal."

"It's not," I said.

"I know. I have the tax records. The recent comparable sales. And—this is the beautiful part—I have every receipt you saved from the renovations you managed five years ago. Granite countertops. New deck. Updated electrical. You documented everything."

I had. Not because I'd planned for this. Just because that's what I did. I kept the files. Organized the paperwork. Made sure everything was recorded.

"They're also trying to move funds," Diana continued. "Transferring money between accounts. Trying to make assets harder to trace."

"Can they do that?"

"They can try. But you gave me thirty years of bank statements. Every transfer is documented. Every account is on record. They're not hiding anything from me."

I closed my eyes. Felt something settle in my chest.

"Thank you," I said.

"Don't thank me yet. This is going to get uglier before it gets better. Brock's attorney is advising him to fight. Hard."

"Let him fight," I said.

Diana was quiet for a moment. Then: "Good. I'll be in touch."

She hung up.

Nova looked at me from across the hotel room. "They're trying to hide money?"

"They're trying."

"Idiots." She opened her laptop. "You kept everything. Every record. Every receipt. They're going to lose."

I nodded. Picked up my coffee again.

They were going to lose. Because I'd been invisible for thirty years. And invisible people see everything.

***

Millie called on day five.

I almost didn't answer. Her name on the screen made my stomach tighten. But Nova nodded at me. So I picked up.

"Elaine." Millie's voice was strained. "I need to talk to you."

"I'm listening."

"It's Julissa. She's—" Millie stopped. Took a breath. "She's taken over the master bedroom. She threw away my things. My shampoo. My face cream. She said she needed to make room."

I didn't say anything.

"And she's having people over. Strangers. Late at night. They smoke on the terrace. They leave glasses everywhere. The house is a mess."

"Where's Brock?" I asked.

"He doesn't care. He's barely home. And when he is, he just—he listens to her. She tells him you're being unreasonable. That you're trying to take everything. And he believes her."

I set my coffee down. "Why are you telling me this?"

Millie was quiet for a long moment. "Because I was wrong. About you. I thought—I thought you were just a housewife. I didn't understand what you did. How much you held together. And now that you're gone—"

Her voice broke.

"Everything's falling apart," she whispered.

I looked at Nova. She was watching me. Waiting.

"I'm sorry, Millie," I said quietly. "But that's not my problem anymore."

"I know. I just—I wanted you to know. That I was wrong. That I see it now."

"Okay," I said.

"Elaine—"

"I have to go."

I hung up. Set the phone on the table.

Nova raised an eyebrow. "She's figuring it out."

"Too late," I said.

But my hands were shaking. I pressed them flat against my thighs.

Nova came over. Sat beside me. Didn't say anything. Just sat.

After a while, I picked up my phone again. Opened Instagram. Posted a photo—the view from our hotel window. Sunlight on the tree-lined street. The caption was simple: *New chapter.*

I hit share.

Thirty seconds later, Brock liked it.

I stared at the notification. Then I blocked him.

Nova saw. Smiled. "Good."

I put the phone away. Stood up. Walked to the window.

Across the city, the brownstone was crumbling. Dishes piling up. Strangers smoking on the terrace. Millie crying in a guest room. Ryan realizing his mother's connections were the only real ones.

And I was here. In a clean hotel room. With my daughter. With my records. With my attorney.

Building something new.

Not for them. For me.

***

That night, Nova's laptop pinged. She looked at the screen. Her eyes widened.

"Mom," she said. "I found something."

I walked over. Looked at the screen.

An article. Three years old. *Real Estate Developer Indicted for Fraud.* And below it, a name I recognized.

Julissa's late husband.

Nova scrolled down. More articles. Federal charges. Bankruptcy. Asset seizure.

"She's broke," Nova said quietly. "She has nothing. The whole Silicon Valley investor thing—it's all fake."

I stared at the screen. At the carefully constructed lie. The performance. The desperation underneath.

"Keep digging," I said.

Nova nodded. Her fingers moved across the keyboard.

I walked back to the window. Looked out at the city. The lights. The streets. The life I was building.

Behind me, Nova worked. Compiling evidence. Building a case.

And somewhere across town, in a brownstone that used to be mine, Julissa was redecorating.

She thought she'd won.

She had no idea what was coming.
