Chapter 3

The morning started like the others. I woke at six. Made the gluten-free toast. Arranged the berries. Blended the dairy-free smoothie with the protein powder Julissa said she needed.

She came down at eight wearing my robe again. I set the smoothie in front of her. She took a sip. Smiled.

"Perfect, Elaine. Thank you."

I nodded. Turned back to the counter.

Ten minutes later, she screamed.

I spun around. Julissa was on her feet, clutching her throat. Her face was red. She clawed at her arms—long scratches appearing on her skin.

"I can't breathe," she gasped. "Shellfish. There's shellfish in this."

Brock rushed in from the study. "What happened?"

"She put shellfish in my smoothie." Julissa's voice was ragged. She held up her arms. Red welts bloomed across her skin. "She knows I'm allergic. She knows."

Brock turned to me. His face was white. "What did you put in there?"

"Berries," I said. "Protein powder. Almond milk. Nothing else."

"You're lying." His voice rose. "She's having a reaction. Look at her."

Ryan appeared in the doorway. Millie behind him. They stared.

I looked at Julissa. Her nails were digging into her own arms. The scratches were fresh. Self-inflicted. I could see the pattern—the way her fingers had dragged across her skin in deliberate lines.

"I didn't put shellfish in anything," I said quietly.

Brock slammed his hand on the counter. "Don't lie to me. You've been cold to her since she got here. You're jealous. You're vindictive."

"Dad—" Ryan started.

"Stay out of this." Brock pointed at me. "Thirty years, Elaine. Thirty years I've put up with your martyrdom. Your silent treatments. Your passive-aggressive bullshit. And now you try to poison her?"

The kitchen was silent. Julissa stood by the island, breathing hard. Her expression was wounded. Grateful. Perfectly composed.

I dried my hands on the towel. Folded it. Set it on the counter.

Then I reached into my bag.

I pulled out the envelope. Diana Park's letterhead. I set it on the marble island between us.

"I'm filing for divorce," I said.

Brock stared at the envelope. "What?"

"I'm filing for divorce. I'm claiming half of everything. The brownstone. The house in the Hamptons. The retirement accounts. The investment portfolio. All of it."

Ryan stepped forward. "Mom, you can't be serious."

"I'm very serious."

Brock grabbed the envelope. Ripped it open. His hands shook as he scanned the pages. "This is insane. You can't just—"

"I can." My voice was steady. "I've been keeping records for thirty years. Every account. Every property. Every dollar. Half of it is mine."

"You're being greedy," Ryan said. His voice was cold. "After everything Dad's done for you—"

"What has he done?" I looked at my son. "Tell me. What has he done?"

Ryan's mouth opened. Closed.

"I paid for this house," I said. "I managed every bill. Every repair. Every appointment. I raised you. I cooked every meal. I gave up everything. And you pushed me out of my own home for her."

I pointed at Julissa. She stepped back.

"You're ungrateful," Brock said. His voice was shaking. "After everything I've given you—"

"You gave me nothing." The words came out flat. Final. "I gave you thirty years. You gave me a spare room and a list of dietary restrictions."

Brock's face turned red. "You can't do this. You can't just walk away."

"Watch me."

I picked up my bag. Walked past them. Out of the kitchen. Up the stairs.

Behind me, Brock shouted. Ryan's voice joined his. Millie said something I couldn't hear.

I went to the spare room. Closed the door. Sat on the bed.

My hands were steady. My breathing was calm.

I pulled out my phone. Dialed.

Nova answered on the second ring. "Mom?"

"I need you to come home," I said.

I told her everything. The wedding. The spare room. The breakfast list. The fake allergy attack. The divorce papers.

I didn't cry. I just stated the facts. One after another. Clean. Simple.

Nova listened. When I finished, there was silence.

Then: "I'm booking a flight."

"You don't have to—"

"I'm booking a flight right now. I'll be there in the morning."

I closed my eyes. "Okay."

"Mom?" Her voice was fierce. "You did the right thing."

I nodded. Even though she couldn't see me.

"I know," I said.

I hung up. Set the phone on the nightstand.

Downstairs, voices rose and fell. Brock was still shouting. Julissa's voice, soothing. Ryan's, sharp and defensive.

I lay back on the narrow bed. Stared at the ceiling.

Thirty years.

It was over.

And I was free.
