Chapter 2

I came back to the brownstone just before sunset. The cab dropped me on the corner. I stood on the sidewalk for a moment, looking up at the windows. Warm light glowed behind the curtains. My home. Thirty years of my life inside those walls.

I walked up the steps. Put my key in the lock. Turned it.

Brock was in the living room with Julissa. They sat close on the sofa, glasses of wine between them. He looked up when I entered.

"Where were you?" His voice was sharp.

"Out," I said.

I walked past them. Up the stairs. Down the hall to the spare room. I closed the door and sat on the narrow bed.

My purse sat beside me. Inside was a business card. Diana Park, Family Law Attorney. I ran my thumb over the embossed letters.

I didn't tell them. Not yet.

Instead, I opened my laptop. I pulled up the files I'd been keeping for thirty years. Household expenses. Bank statements. Property records. Retirement accounts. I'd always been the one who managed the paperwork. Brock never asked. He just signed where I told him to sign.

I started a new spreadsheet. Column A: Asset. Column B: Value. Column C: Date of Acquisition.

I worked until midnight.

***

The next morning, I woke at six. I went downstairs and made breakfast. Gluten-free toast. Dairy-free yogurt. Fresh berries arranged on a plate.

Julissa came down at eight wearing a silk robe. Not hers. Mine. The one Brock gave me for our anniversary five years ago.

"Good morning, Elaine." She smiled. "This looks wonderful."

"You're welcome," I said.

I poured her coffee. Set it beside her plate. She didn't look up.

Brock appeared next. He kissed Julissa's cheek before he sat down. He didn't look at me.

I stood by the counter and watched them eat. Julissa laughed at something Brock said. She touched his hand. He leaned closer.

I wiped down the counter. Rinsed the cutting board. Put everything away.

"Elaine," Julissa said. "Let me help with those dishes."

She stood. Carried her plate to the sink. Set it down gently.

"Thank you," I said.

She smiled. "Of course. We're family now, aren't we?"

I looked at her. Really looked. The Chanel bag on the chair had stitching that didn't quite line up. The logo was a millimeter too far to the left. I'd worked in enough boutiques in my twenties to know.

"Yes," I said. "We are."

She went back to Brock. I washed the dishes. My hands moved automatically. Soap. Water. Rinse. Repeat.

I filed the observation in the back of my mind. Not a grievance. Just a fact.

That afternoon, Millie stopped by. She found me folding laundry in the spare room.

"Elaine," she said. "Ryan's having some colleagues over for dinner tomorrow. Pre-celebration for his partnership track."

I nodded. "I'll make something nice."

"Actually..." She looked uncomfortable. "He thought maybe you could eat in your room. Just this once. Julissa's coming, and she's been so helpful with introductions. Ryan doesn't want anything to seem... awkward."

I set down the towel I was folding. "Awkward."

"You know how it is. Work stuff. You probably wouldn't enjoy it anyway."

I looked at her. She was young. Pretty. Wearing a bracelet I'd given her at the wedding. She wouldn't meet my eyes.

"Of course," I said. "Whatever Ryan needs."

She left. I sat on the bed.

I opened my laptop. Added a new entry to the spreadsheet. Not an asset. A note. Date. Time. What was said. Who said it.

I was building something. I didn't know what yet. But I was building it carefully.

***

The next evening, I cooked dinner for eight. Herb-crusted salmon. Roasted vegetables. A salad with the dressing Ryan liked. I set the dining room table with the good china.

At six-thirty, I carried my plate upstairs. I sat in the spare room and ate alone. Through the floor, I heard laughter. Voices. The clink of glasses.

I heard Julissa's voice, bright and confident. "Oh, I've been advising a few portfolio companies in the fintech space. Happy to make introductions."

More laughter. Ryan's voice, eager. "That would be incredible."

I finished my salmon. Washed my plate in the small bathroom sink. Sat back down at my laptop.

I pulled up LinkedIn. Searched for Julissa Reed.

Her profile was impressive. Venture capital. Silicon Valley. Advisory boards. But when I clicked on the companies, half the links were broken. The other half led to generic landing pages with no real information.

I opened a new tab. Searched for her late husband. Found an article from three years ago. Real estate fraud investigation. Federal charges. Death shortly after indictment.

I bookmarked everything.

Downstairs, someone laughed. A cork popped. Music started playing.

I closed my laptop. Lay back on the narrow bed. Stared at the ceiling.

Thirty years. I'd given thirty years to this house. This family. This man.

I thought about the attorney's card in my purse. The spreadsheet on my laptop. The facts I was collecting, one by one.

I wasn't angry. That surprised me. I thought I'd be angry.

Instead, I felt clear. Cold. Focused.

I was building a case. Not for them. For me.

And when I was ready, I would present it.
