Chapter 1

The rooftop venue glowed like a jewelry box. Strings of lights crisscrossed the Manhattan sky. The florist had delivered exactly what I'd ordered—white roses and peonies, nothing too showy. The caterer had the dietary restriction cards I'd typed up myself. Everything was perfect.

I sat at a table near the edge of the ballroom. Not the family table. That one was full. I'd checked the seating chart three times, but somehow my name ended up here, tucked between a cousin I'd never met and an empty chair.

Ryan and Millie swayed on the dance floor. Her dress caught the light. His hand rested on her back. I watched them and felt that bubble in my chest—the one that comes when you see your child happy. I'd done this. Coordinated the vendors, handled the RSVPs, called the venue twice a day for a month. My feet ached in these heels, but it didn't matter.

The song ended. Applause rippled through the room.

Then Brock stood up.

He crossed the floor in his tuxedo, moving toward a woman I didn't recognize. She sat at the family table—the seat that should have been mine. She wore a black dress that probably cost more than the flowers. Her hair was perfect. Everything about her was perfect.

Brock extended his hand. She took it. He led her onto the stage.

My stomach dropped.

He picked up the microphone. Feedback squealed. Everyone turned.

"I want to introduce someone special," Brock said. His voice was warm. I hadn't heard that warmth in years. "This is Julissa Reed. She's someone who has always held a special place in my heart."

The room clapped politely. I sat frozen.

Julissa smiled. She touched Brock's arm. He looked at her the way men look at women in movies—like she was the only person in the room.

I tried to swallow. My throat was too tight.

The rest of the evening blurred. Brock pulled out Julissa's chair. He refilled her champagne before she asked. He leaned close and whispered things that made her laugh. She touched his shoulder. His hand lingered on hers.

I sat at my side table and watched.

No one came over. No one asked if I was okay. Ryan was busy with his new in-laws. Nova was in Los Angeles. I picked at my salmon and tried to look like I belonged here.

When the cake was cut, I clapped with everyone else. When the bouquet was thrown, I stood in the back. When the night finally ended, I rode home in a separate car.

***

The next morning, I woke up in my own bed. Brock's side was cold. He'd come in late. I'd heard him stumbling in the dark.

I went downstairs. He was in the kitchen, already dressed. Julissa sat at the island in a silk robe, drinking coffee from my favorite mug.

"Good morning," I said quietly.

Brock didn't look up. "Julissa's staying in the guest suite for a few weeks."

I blinked. "Oh."

"You'll need to move your things to the spare room," he continued. "Down the hall. The small one."

My chest tightened. "The spare room?"

"It's temporary." He slid a piece of paper across the counter. "Julissa has some dietary restrictions. Gluten-free, dairy-free, low-histamine. Make sure breakfast is ready by eight."

I stared at the list. My hands shook.

Julissa smiled. "Thank you, Elaine. I really appreciate it."

I nodded. I didn't trust my voice.

I spent the rest of the morning moving my clothes into the spare room. It was small and dusty. The window looked out at the neighbor's brick wall. I hung my dresses in the narrow closet and told myself it was temporary.

***

Two days later, Ryan came by. He found me in the kitchen, scrubbing the counters.

"Mom," he said. "I need you to leave for the afternoon."

I turned. "What?"

"Julissa needs space to rest. You're making too much noise."

"I'm cleaning."

"Just go out for a few hours." His voice was flat. "Stop making everything about yourself."

I stared at him. This was my son. I'd raised him. Paid for his college. Sat through every parent-teacher conference.

"Ryan—"

"Mom. Please."

He walked me to the door. His hand was firm on my elbow. I grabbed my purse from the hall table. He opened the door and waited.

I stepped outside.

The door closed behind me.

I stood on the sidewalk. Cars passed. A woman walked by with a dog. The sun was too bright.

I looked back at the brownstone. My home. Thirty years of my life inside those walls.

Something cracked in my chest. Not loud. Just a quiet snap, like a thread breaking.

I raised my hand. A cab pulled over.

"Park Avenue," I said.

The driver nodded.

I climbed in. The door slammed shut. We pulled into traffic.

I didn't look back.
