Chapter 3

The note came first.

Wesley found it on his windshield on a Tuesday morning. He didn't tell me about it. I only knew because I found it in his coat pocket that night — a plain white index card, no signature, just a number and two words written in block letters.

PAY UP.

I folded it back the way I found it and put it exactly where it had been.

The phone call came three days later. He took it in the bathroom with the door locked, which meant he thought I couldn't hear him. He was wrong. I stood in the hallway with my hand flat against the wall and listened to his voice go from defensive to frightened to something close to begging.

I went back to the kitchen and started dinner.

---

The men in the parking garage were on a Thursday.

He came home at six-thirty instead of seven, which was the first sign. He came in through the front door and stood in the entryway for a moment without moving, like he'd forgotten what came next. His jacket was wrong. One lapel turned under. His tie was loose.

I looked up from the book I wasn't reading.

"Wesley."

He looked at me. His face was the color of old chalk.

He sat down on the couch and put his head in his hands.

"I'm in trouble," he said. "Real trouble, Audrey."

I set the book down. I waited.

It came out in pieces. Not all of it — he was careful, even now, even scared, to keep the edges soft. He said debts, not how many. He said some bad decisions, not Kahlani's name. He said these people are serious like that was the important part, like the serious people were the problem and not the man who borrowed from them.

I let him talk. I kept my face open. Worried. The way a wife looks when she's frightened for her husband.

"How much?" I asked, when he finally stopped.

He told me a number. It wasn't the real number. I knew the real number. I'd known it for weeks.

I was quiet for a long moment. I looked at my hands in my lap.

"What do you need me to do?" I said.

His breath came out in a rush.

---

I let him watch me struggle with it.

That was important. A woman who forgave too easily wasn't believable. A woman who had to be convinced — who sat at the kitchen table with her hands wrapped around a mug of cold coffee and stared at the wall like she was weighing something enormous — that woman was real. That woman was a wife choosing love over sense.

I let him sit with the silence for almost ten minutes.

Then I said, quietly, "We could sell the apartment."

He went still.

"It's enough to cover everything," I said. "We could consolidate. Start clean. Get out from under all of it." I looked up at him. My eyes were tired. Soft. "I don't want to lose you to this, Wesley. I don't want to lose everything we built."

He crossed the room and knelt in front of me and took both my hands. His grip was tight. Desperate.

"I don't deserve you," he said.

I looked at him. I gave him the small, sad smile.

"No," I said gently. "You don't. But I love you anyway."

He pressed his forehead against our joined hands. I felt his shoulders shake.

I began preparing the paperwork the next morning. He signed everything I put in front of him without reading a single page. I watched his pen move across the signature lines and felt something settle in my chest like a stone dropping through still water.

He called Edith that evening. I could hear his voice from the kitchen, lighter than it had been in weeks. *She came through for us, Mom. I told you she would.*

Through the wall, I heard Edith's reply. Approving. Satisfied. The sound of a woman who believed she had always known how this would go.

I dried the dishes and said nothing.

---

Maeve texted me that Friday.

*It's in motion. Contact made through the Harlow Group. Looks completely clean from his end. Lucrative side consulting arrangement. All he has to do is sign.*

I read it standing at the kitchen window with my coffee. The street below was gray and wet. A cab splashed through a puddle at the corner.

*How long?* I typed back.

*He'll have the contract by Wednesday. A man that broke and that arrogant? He won't last forty-eight hours.*

I thought about Wesley at the kitchen table last night, relaxed for the first time in months, eating the dinner I'd made, talking about maybe taking a trip once things settled down. He'd touched my hand across the table. Grateful. Relieved.

Saved.

*Good,* I typed.

I finished my coffee. Put the mug in the sink. Watched the street for another moment.

Wednesday. He'd sign by Wednesday.

I turned away from the window and went to get dressed.
