Chapter 5

Donald stepped into my office just after four o’clock and shut the door.

"Dawson is making calls," he said without sitting down. "He took Hayes to dinner last night. Promised him a high-paying consulting contract once the dust settles. This morning, he offered Miller the chair on the audit committee."

"He’s lining up votes," I said.

"An emergency shareholders' meeting," Donald confirmed, his voice tight. "He wants to push you out before the quarter ends."

I nodded slowly, but I knew that was only half of Dawson’s game.

Victor had called me earlier with a far uglier piece of news. For months, Dawson had been meeting in secret with a man named Dr. Whitford. Whitford was a licensed psychiatrist with an expensive practice on the Upper East Side. He had a quiet reputation among Manhattan’s elite for doing dirty work—specifically, signing involuntary psychiatric commitment papers for wealthy clients who wanted an inconvenient spouse locked away.

Dawson had been compiling a dossier on me. He documented my "erratic behavior." He twisted my quiet grief into "paranoid delusions." He even secured a false statement from a general practitioner he had paid off. On paper, Dawson was painting himself as the heartbroken, devoted husband who had no choice but to institutionalize his unstable wife.

He didn't just want my shares. He wanted to strip away my mind, my voice, and my freedom.

"Let him call the meeting," I told Donald quietly. "Let him think he has everyone in his pocket."

Donald searched my face. Whatever he saw there seemed to steady him. He gave me a short nod and slipped out.

By eight that evening, the executive floor was nearly deserted.

The cleaning crew had already emptied the bins, and the long hallways were dim. But a faint light still spilled from the corner glass office at the end of the corridor.

Technology Department.

I walked past and saw Kieran Palmer sitting at his desk. The glow of three wide monitors washed over his face. His tie was loosened, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms.

He was always here.

For the past two weeks, every time I stayed late, Kieran was at his desk. He never hovered. He never asked invasive questions. He just worked.

I turned back to my office. Sitting right in the center of my blotter was a fresh, crisp manila folder. On top of it was a paper cup from the deli downstairs.

I picked up the cup. It was warm. I peeled back the plastic lid and took a sip.

Black coffee. No cream, no sugar. Exactly the way I liked it.

Dawson had lived with me for five years and still handed me cups loaded with milk and artificial sweetener. Kieran had never asked me once, yet he never got it wrong.

I opened the folder. It was a complete infrastructure audit of the company’s internal servers. It highlighted every single unauthorized database query Dawson had run over the past eighteen months, mapped out with timestamps and IP addresses.

I hadn’t even known how to ask for this data. Kieran had simply noticed what I was building, figured out what was missing, and put it on my desk before I realized I needed it.

I stood there by my desk, holding the warm cup against my chest. Through the glass, I looked at Kieran. He tapped something into his keyboard, rubbed the back of his neck, and took a drink of water.

How long had he been doing this? How long had he been quietly standing between me and the dark, asking for nothing in return?

A strange, quiet warmth flickered behind my ribs. I didn't walk into his office. I didn't interrupt him. But for the first time, I didn't look away, either.

My phone buzzed against the mahogany wood.

The screen showed Victor Hale’s private number.

I pressed it to my ear. "Victor?"

"It’s done," Victor said. His voice was brisk, clipped, and sharp. "The NYPD financial crimes unit ran the Cayman transfers. It’s open-and-shut wire fraud. The FBI white-collar division has officially opened an investigation. They’re consolidating the warrants right now."

My breath caught in my throat. "And the hospital records?"

"Our document expert finished the forensic analysis an hour ago," Victor said. "The forged signature and the altered lab results weren't just amateur work. The digital records were modified using a specialized clinical management software."

"Whose software?" I asked, though my gut already knew the answer.

"Dr. Whitford’s private clinic," Victor said grimly. "The software license is registered under his name. Dawson used Whitford to cover up the methotrexate poisoning three years ago, and now he’s using him to draft your commitment papers. The paper trail links them directly."

A chill swept over my skin, cold and electric.

"They murdered my baby," I whispered.

"And they put it in writing," Victor replied. "The evidence chain is complete, Alina. The warrants will be signed by morning. But you need to watch your back tonight. Through a contact at the county clerk's office, I found out Dawson already filed the emergency psychiatric petition. He’s going to make his move any second."

I looked out my high window at the glittering grid of Manhattan below. The city looked sharp, cold, and entirely clear.

"Let him come," I said.

I hung up the phone. My hands were perfectly steady.

My brother didn't even blink before he snapped, "Done. Take her." I was whisked away to City Hall in a silent Rolls Royce, signing a marriage license before I could even process the betrayal.
