Chapter 3

Priya Malhotra showed up at nine sharp, wearing a blazer the color of a bruise and carrying a leather bag that looked like it had survived a war. She didn't offer condolences. She didn't ask how I was holding up. She just sat down across from me at the small round table by the window, pulled out a legal pad, and said, "Start from the beginning. Don't skip the boring parts. The boring parts are usually where the money is."

So I did.

I told her about the notebook, the one from Stanford, filled with early drafts of the algorithm before Apex Digital had a name or an office or Dante's face on its homepage. I told her about the nights at the kitchen table, laptop open, baby monitor crackling on the counter, committing code under his username because it was easier, because he asked, because I loved him and thought love meant not needing the credit.

I told her about the patents.

Her pen stopped moving.

"Say that again," she said.

"The core algorithm patents. They're registered under my name. Livia Cooper. Not Apex Digital, not Dante Stevens." I turned my laptop toward her and pulled up the filing. "I did it myself, years ago. It felt responsible at the time. I didn't think about it as leverage. I just didn't want my work floating around unprotected."

Priya read the screen twice. Then she looked up at me the way you look at someone who just told you they'd been sitting on a winning lottery ticket without cashing it.

"Livia," she said slowly, "you don't just have a divorce case. You have an intellectual property case that can bury him."

Something in my chest loosened, just slightly. Not relief. Recognition.

"The IPO filing," she went on, flipping to a fresh page, "requires explicit authorization from the registered patent holder before the SEC will clear it. If you didn't sign off on this before the gala—"

"I didn't sign anything."

"Then he doesn't have an IPO." She said it flatly, like a fact of gravity. "He has a company built on a foundation he doesn't legally own."

I clicked my pen. Once. Twice. Three times. Priya didn't ask about the habit. She just kept writing.

---

Dante found out four hours later, according to the voicemail he left at 1:47 p.m.

I didn't answer. I let it go to voicemail on purpose, then listened to it with Priya sitting across from me, both of us watching the little waveform tick across the screen like a lie detector.

"Livia. Baby." His voice had that practiced softness, the one he used on investors when a number came in low. "I know last night was — a lot. I know I hurt you. But legal just told me something that doesn't make sense, and I need you to call me back so we can clear it up. It's probably just a paperwork thing. You know how these filings are."

A paperwork thing.

Priya raised an eyebrow at me. "He doesn't know yet that you know."

"He will," I said.

The flowers arrived at three. Two dozen white peonies, my favorite, the kind he used to bring home during our first year of dating when he still remembered things without being told. The card said, *Come home. We'll fix this together. — D*

I left them in the box.

By six, Gwendolyn called.

I let it ring twice before I picked up, mostly out of curiosity.

"Livia." Her voice arrived already wounded, already halfway into a monologue she'd clearly rehearsed. "After everything this family sacrificed for you — the holidays we included you in, the way I treated you like my own daughter — you would destroy your own husband over a misunderstanding?"

"Which misunderstanding, Gwendolyn? The mistress, or the uniform?"

Silence, brief and brittle. Then she recovered, sliding into the old script. "You're being dramatic. Men make mistakes. A wife who truly loves her husband finds a way through it. That's what family does. That's what *I* did, for thirty years."

"I hope that worked out for you," I said, and hung up.

Elisha called forty minutes later. I let it go to voicemail, then played it back with Priya listening, both of us silent.

"You listen to me," his voice growled, no preamble, no softness at all. "You are nothing without the Stevens name. Nothing. Whatever fantasy you're chasing right now, drop it. If you pursue this legally, this family has resources you cannot begin to comprehend, and we will use every one of them. Do you understand me?"

I hit save on the recording before it even finished. Filed it in the folder Priya had helped me name that morning — the boring one, the one no one would look at twice.

Priya watched me do it without a flicker of surprise. "Good," she said. "Keep doing exactly that."

I clicked the pen again. The sound was small and steady in the quiet hotel room, a rhythm to hold onto while the storm outside kept building. I thought of eight years of small surrenders, of a notebook full of my own handwriting, of a man who thought a bouquet of peonies could undo a rooftop full of cameras.

"He thinks this is a paperwork problem," I said.

Priya closed her legal pad. "Let's go show him it isn't."
