Chapter 1

I made his favorite dinner that night.

Salmon with lemon butter, roasted asparagus, the good wine we'd been saving. I set the table properly, lit a candle, and told myself this was enough—that supporting him from here, from home, was its own kind of victory.

Dante had kissed my forehead before he left. 'It's just a stuffy investor dinner,' he said, already reaching for his jacket. 'You'd be bored out of your mind. I'll be back by ten.'

I believed him. Eight years of marriage, and I still believed him.

I changed into sweats, poured myself a glass of the good wine, and pulled up the financial news on my laptop. Just to watch. Just to see the moment the company we built together rang the opening bell.

Apex Digital Technologies. His name on the door. My code in the walls.

The rooftop venue was stunning. Soft lights, Manhattan skyline, a crowd of people in black tie. I recognized some of them—investors Dante had courted for years, journalists I'd seen in his email threads, board members whose names I knew but whose faces I'd never been allowed to meet. The camera swept across the room, and I leaned forward.

Then the doors opened.

Dante walked in.

He was wearing the navy suit I'd picked out. He looked beautiful. He looked like everything I had spent eight years building toward. And on his arm, in a red gown that caught every light in the room, was Azalea Fox.

His secretary.

I'd met her twice. Both times she'd smiled at me with teeth too perfect and eyes that measured everything.

Dante stepped to the microphone. He took her hand. He said her name to a room full of cameras.

'My co-founder,' he said. 'And the woman who changed my life.'

The applause was immediate. Champagne flutes rose. Azalea turned to him with a smile I recognized—the kind you practice—and he kissed her temple while the cameras flashed.

I sat on my couch in my sweats and watched my marriage end on a livestream.

I don't remember deciding to go. I just remember being in the car.

I didn't change into anything special. A simple black dress, heels I grabbed off the rack by the door. My hands were steady on the wheel the whole drive, which surprised me. I kept waiting to cry. Nothing came.

The venue was on the forty-second floor. Dante's head of security, a thick-necked man named Briggs, was at the rooftop entrance. He saw me and something moved across his face—not surprise, something closer to pity. He stepped aside.

The room was everything the livestream had promised. Warm and glittering and full of people who mattered to my husband. I stood at the entrance and found him immediately across the crowd, the way you always find the person you've spent eight years watching.

He found me at the same moment.

His face did something I had never seen it do before. Not guilt. Not love. Alarm—the kind that's really just calculation running fast.

He was at my side in under a minute.

'What are you doing here.' Not a question.

'I watched the livestream,' I said.

His hand closed around my elbow and he steered me sideways, through a door I hadn't noticed, into a service corridor that smelled like industrial cleaner and old carpet. The noise of the party dropped behind us.

'You need to leave,' he said. His voice was low. Controlled. 'Rowan Hale is out there. If he sees you like this—'

'Like what?' I asked. 'Like your wife?'

'Like a liability.' He said it without flinching. Then he turned to a supply cart against the wall and pulled a folded uniform from the shelf. Black pants, white collared shirt, the small gold logo of the catering company on the breast pocket. He held it out to me.

'Put this on,' he said. 'Stay out of the main room or go home. Those are your options.'

I looked at the uniform in his hands. I looked at his face. Eight years of small surrenders lived in the space between us.

I took it.

I don't know why. I think I was still hoping I was wrong about everything.

The champagne hit me before I heard her voice.

Cold, fizzing, soaking through the white shirt in an instant. I gasped. The tray in my hands tilted and I caught it by reflex, and when I looked up Azalea Fox was standing in front of me with an empty flute and a face arranged into perfect, theatrical horror.

'Oh, I'm so sorry—' Her voice carried. Heads turned. 'These events must be so overwhelming for someone who isn't used to them.'

Somewhere nearby, someone laughed.

I stood there soaked in champagne that cost more than my first paycheck, wearing a uniform my husband had handed me, in a room full of people celebrating technology I had built from nothing.

And something in me went very, very quiet.

Not broken. Not yet.

Done.
