Chapter 2

Four days after the hospital, I went for a walk. The doctor had said to rest. I couldn't. The apartment was too quiet, and the guest room door stayed shut.

So I put on a long coat and walked into Central Park.

It was one of those bright October afternoons that feels like an insult. Gold leaves. Joggers. A man selling pretzels near the Mall. My stomach ached with every step, a dull, low pull, like a bruise on the inside. I kept one hand in my pocket so no one could see it shaking.

I made it to the bridge near Bethesda Terrace. Then I stopped.

Arlo was walking toward me.

He wasn't alone. Miriam hung on his arm in a cream coat that probably cost more than my first car. Her free hand cradled her stomach, slow and gentle, like she was soothing a sleeping cat. She was showing it off. Every few steps she looked down at it and smiled.

Arlo threw his head back and laughed. I hadn't heard that laugh in two years. Then he put his hand over hers, over the bump, and leaned in to say something into her hair.

My lungs forgot their job.

I knew every inch of that hand. It had held mine in a courthouse, in a hospital, in a hundred cold restaurants where we'd split one dessert because we were broke. Now it was spread across a lie, as protective as a shield.

Miriam looked up. Her eyes found mine, and her whole face brightened.

She waved. Fingers wiggling. Sweet as syrup.

Arlo followed her gaze. I watched him see me. I watched him see my face, my coat, the hand pressed to my own stomach.

He didn't flinch. He didn't let go of her. He just turned back to Miriam and guided her around a puddle.

Something in my chest went quiet. It wasn't the loud kind of breaking. It was the sound of a lock sliding home.

I turned around. I walked away without a word, my heels clicking on the old stone, and I did not look back once.

By the time I reached Fifth Avenue, I wasn't crying. I was making a list.

---

I went back to Kelly Enterprises on Monday.

I had built half the place. I had written the first business plan on a napkin. I had brought in the first investors, using my mother's maiden name so Arlo wouldn't know. My badge still opened every door on the forty-first floor.

But the office felt different. It took me a few days to figure out why.

The ficus by the elevator was gone. In its place, a glass vase of white peonies. Miriam's favorite. A new nameplate sat outside the executive suite: *Miriam Perry, Executive Assistant to the CEO.* The old one had just said *Assistant.*

Small things. Tiny. Like someone redecorating a room while the owner was in the hallway.

On Tuesday, I checked the server logs. I still had admin access from the early days, back when I'd set up the whole system myself. Arlo had never thought to take it away. He never thought of me as a threat.

Three client files had been forwarded to a personal Gmail. Then five more. The timestamps were all after seven p.m., when the floor was empty.

I copied the log and said nothing.

On Wednesday, I passed the break room and heard laughter. Four junior associates stood around Miriam, each holding a pastry from the good bakery on Lexington. She'd bought them. Of course she had.

"You guys are the future of this company," Miriam said, light and warm. "Arlo always says so. When things change around here, I'll make sure you're taken care of."

*When things change.*

One of them, a kid named Devon, glanced up and saw me in the doorway. His smile slid off his face. Nobody said hello.

I walked on.

Thursday was the board meeting. I arrived early and took my usual seat near the window. Through the glass wall of the conference room, I watched Miriam cross the hall with a tray of coffee. She stopped beside Marcus Vance, the lead board member, a man with a face like a closed filing cabinet.

She set a cup in front of him. She touched his shoulder.

"Mr. Vance," she said, so softly I almost missed it through the door. "I just think Arlo deserves a partner who truly believes in him. Someone who sees what he's become."

Vance didn't answer right away. He stirred his coffee once. Twice.

"Is that so?" he said.

"He's been under so much pressure." She sighed, one hand drifting down to her stomach. "I just want him to be happy."

Vance's eyes flicked past her and landed on me through the glass. Just for a second. Then he looked back at his cup.

Miriam turned. She saw me too. Her smile didn't waver.

She lifted her fingers and wiggled them again.

I sat very still. I straightened my cuffs, one at a time, the way I'd done in Sterling's office. The coffee in front of me was black and bitter, and I drank it down without wincing.

Let her redecorate.

She had no idea whose name was on the lease.
