Chapter 3

Arthur Sterling slid the papers across his desk on Friday morning. The skyline behind him was the color of wet slate.

"The preliminary filings," he said. "And Arlo's response. It came in last night."

I read it twice. The words were polite. The meaning was not.

Kelly Enterprises, it said, was built on the vision and labor of Mr. Arlo Kelly. Mrs. Kelly's contributions were "domestic and emotional in nature." They wanted a clean split of the home, the accounts, and a small settlement for me. Something like a tip.

Domestic and emotional.

I set the page down very carefully. My fingers wanted to crush it.

"There's no mention of the seed money," I said.

"None." Sterling's mouth thinned. "His lawyers are betting nobody will ask."

He opened a box and began laying things on the desk, one at a time. Wire transfers, three years of them, from a Harris trust account to a shell company in Delaware. The founding documents, with a Harris Holdings subsidiary named as first investor. Loan guarantees. Every one of them had my signature at the bottom. The ink looked so young.

I remembered signing them. At our old kitchen table, with Arlo kissing my forehead. *You're the best thing that ever happened to me, Georgia.*

"Seven major guarantees," Sterling said. "If the bank had called any of them, you'd have lost everything. He knew that."

"He knew," I said.

Sterling folded his hands. His voice dropped, almost kind. "He's counting on you being too grieved to fight."

I looked at the papers. Then at my own hands, which had stopped shaking sometime in the last minute.

"Then he's counting wrong."

I straightened in the chair. I pulled my cuffs down, one, then the other.

"What do you need from me?"

A ghost of a smile crossed the old man's face. "Only your name, Miss Harris. The one you've been hiding."

---

Harris Holdings occupied the top six floors of a limestone tower on Park Avenue. I hadn't walked through its doors in four years.

The lobby smelled exactly the same. Floor polish and old money. The security guard, a man named Walt who used to slip me butterscotch candies, stood up so fast his chair rolled backward.

"Miss Harris," he said. His voice cracked on it. "Welcome home."

I nodded. I didn't trust my throat.

The elevator rose in silence. I watched the numbers climb and thought of my father in this building, his tie loosened, laughing at some joke only the janitor understood. He'd been gone three years. I had missed the funeral's last hour because Arlo needed me at a dinner.

The doors opened on the fifty-fourth floor.

The boardroom was long and dark and lined with portraits. Eight men sat around the table. Eight gray heads. Some of them had bounced me on their knees. Some had sat through my college graduation. Now they turned toward me all at once, like sunflowers.

Nobody spoke.

Old Mr. Whitcomb, the treasurer, pressed a hand to his chest. Relief flooded his face. Another man, Hale, studied me with narrowed eyes. He was wondering if I was a ghost. Or a problem.

I walked the length of the room. My heels were the only sound.

The chair at the head of the table was empty. It had been empty for three years. No one had dared fill it.

I didn't make a speech. I didn't pause for effect. I pulled the chair out, sat down, and opened the quarterly report in front of me.

"Page four," I said. "Why did European logistics drop eleven percent?"

A beat of silence.

Whitcomb fumbled with his papers. "Well, there was a... a supplier issue in Rotterdam..."

"Which supplier?"

"I'd have to check."

"Please do." I turned the page. "And page nine. This acquisition in Chicago. Who signed off on a premium that high?"

Hale cleared his throat. "That was a collective decision."

"Then someone can explain it collectively."

No one laughed. Someone shifted in his chair. The air in the room changed, tightened, the way it does before a storm.

I kept asking. Rotterdam. Chicago. A pension fund nobody had audited in two years. I asked until Whitcomb's forehead shone and Hale stopped studying me and started writing things down.

When the meeting ended, nobody rose right away.

Whitcomb finally stood. His eyes were wet. "Your father would have—" He stopped. He tried again. "Welcome back, Georgia."

I closed the report.

Through the tall windows, the city glittered, vast and indifferent. Somewhere in it, Arlo was adjusting his watch and feeling safe.

Let him.

I had come back. And every person in that room knew it.
