Chapter 2

Sylvia's office was on the thirty-fourth floor of a building on Lexington. Clean lines, no clutter, the kind of space that said she didn't waste time on anything that didn't matter.

She slid the document case across the desk to me without preamble.

"Single signature page," she said. "Filed in Delaware. His team will be looking at New York and New Jersey first. By the time they find it, it'll already be processed."

I opened the case. I read every page. All forty-three of them.

Sylvia didn't rush me. She refilled her coffee once and answered two emails and didn't say a word. That was why I'd called her two years ago and kept her number. She understood that some things required stillness.

When I finished, I picked up the pen.

My signature looked the same as it always did. Neat. Controlled. The signature of a woman who had been signing her name to things she didn't choose for a very long time.

I capped the pen and set it down.

"Your copies are in the blue folder," Sylvia said. "Originals stay with me until you're ready to file."

I put the blue folder in my bag. I locked the document case and set it back on her side of the desk.

"How long do I have?" I asked.

Sylvia looked at me steadily. "As long as you need to find the right moment."

I nodded. I picked up my coat.

"Estelle." Her voice stopped me at the door. "Don't wait too long."

I didn't answer. But I heard her.

---

I found the escort agency through a contact I'd made at a Rivera charity gala three years ago — a woman who moved in the same circles and had, at the time, whispered the name to me as a joke. I hadn't laughed then. I filed it away the way I filed most things: quietly, in a place I could find again.

His name was Marcus. He was tall, well-dressed, and professional in the way that mattered — he understood exactly what the evening was and what it wasn't. We had dinner at Aureole. I wore the black dress Dane had bought me for our second anniversary and had never once asked me to wear again.

I made sure we sat near the window.

I made sure we laughed at the right moments.

I knew at least four people in that room who would have Dane's number in their phones before the appetizers were cleared.

I was home by ten.

Dane came through the penthouse door at eleven-forty.

I was in the sitting room with a book I wasn't reading when I heard the elevator. I set the book on the cushion beside me. I folded my hands in my lap. I waited.

He came in fast. His jacket was still on. His jaw was set in the way it got when he was working very hard to stay controlled and not quite managing it.

He stopped in the middle of the room and looked at me.

"You want to tell me what tonight was?"

I didn't answer.

"I had three separate people send me those photos." His voice was low and tight. "Three. Do you understand what you looked like? What that does to my name?"

I watched him.

"You want to embarrass me? Fine. But not like this. Not in front of people I do business with, not at a restaurant where my father's partners eat, not —" He stopped. Pressed his fingers to his temple. "You are my wife."

"I know," I said.

"Then act like it." The control slipped just slightly. "You think this is a game? You think you can just — what, humiliate me because you're angry about something? You're being ungrateful. You're being a disgrace."

He kept going. I let him. I sat with my hands folded and I listened to every word he said, and I noticed the way his voice got louder when I didn't react, and I noticed how that made him angrier, and I noticed that underneath the anger there was something else. Something that looked almost like fear.

He ran out of words eventually. They always do.

The room went quiet.

I looked at him. Really looked — at the man standing in the middle of a penthouse that cost more than most people would earn in a lifetime, in a suit that had been fitted to his exact measurements, with his name on three buildings visible from this window.

I didn't say anything.

The silence stretched. Five seconds. Ten.

Something shifted in his face. A flicker of something uncertain. He opened his mouth.

"Estelle —"

"Good night, Dane," I said.

I picked up my book. I turned the page.

He stood there for another moment. Then I heard his footsteps cross the room. The bedroom door closed.

I set the book down and looked out at the city.

Somewhere in my bag, in a blue folder, forty-three pages were waiting.

I just needed the right moment.

I was patient. I had been patient for a very long time.

A little longer wouldn't break me.
