Chapter 3

The annual Rivera Foundation charity gala was a sea of black ties and evening gowns, crystal chandeliers casting fractured light across the ballroom. I stood near the champagne fountain, nursing a glass I hadn't touched, watching the crowd move in their choreographed patterns. Dane was across the room, his hand resting on the small of Nylah's back as they spoke to the mayor. His touch was casual, practiced—the kind of gesture that spoke of familiarity rather than passion. I didn't mind. I had stopped minding months ago.

I was examining the ice sculpture when I felt a presence beside me. Nylah. She wore a red dress that clung to her body like water, her hair swept up to expose the delicate line of her throat. She looked at me with eyes that held no warmth.

'Estelle,' she said, her voice honeyed with false concern. 'You look pale. Are you feeling well?'

Before I could answer, she gasped dramatically and lurched forward. The glass of red wine in her hand arced through the air, its contents splashing down the front of my ivory gown in a violent crimson bloom. The cold liquid seeped through the silk, shocking against my skin.

'Oh my God!' Nylah's voice carried across the ballroom. 'I'm so sorry! Someone bumped me—I didn't see you there!'

The room turned to stare. Conversations halted mid-sentence. I felt the weight of a hundred curious eyes, the silent assessment of the city's elite as they took in my ruined dress and Nylah's perfectly performed dismay.

'It's fine,' I said quietly. 'These things happen.'

I set my untouched champagne on a passing waiter's tray and made my way to the restroom, my heels clicking against marble with measured precision. I didn't hurry. I didn't show any sign of the humiliation burning in my chest.

The ladies' room was mercifully empty. I locked myself in a stall and pressed my forehead against the cool metal door, breathing deeply. The silk of my dress clung to my skin, the wine already beginning to dry into stiff, dark patches.

The door opened with a soft click. Nylah's heels appeared in the gap beneath the stall door.

'I know you're in here,' she said. Her voice had changed—all pretense of warmth stripped away, leaving something cold and cutting. 'Come out and face me.'

I opened the door.

In the harsh fluorescent light, Nylah's mask slipped completely. She looked at me with naked contempt, her perfect features twisted with a hatred so pure it was almost beautiful.

'You're nothing,' she said, her voice low and unhurried. 'A placeholder. A convenience. A woman he keeps out of habit rather than feeling. Do you understand that?'

She stepped closer, her perfume—something expensive and cloying—filling the space between us. 'You should leave,' she continued. 'Before he discards you with even less dignity than you have now.'

I looked at her. Really looked. At the woman who had spent years trying to replace me, who had orchestrated this evening's performance with surgical precision, who believed she had won.

'You've never once asked yourself,' I said softly, 'why he married me twice and never married you at all.'

I left her standing there, her mouth slightly open, the words hanging in the air between us like smoke.

Three days later, I lay on the cold table of the MRI machine, my head positioned carefully in the bore. The technician had just stepped out to check the calibration. The persistent headaches had been getting worse—sharp, stabbing pains behind my eyes that left me dizzy and nauseous.

The machine hummed softly, its magnetic field invisible but powerful. I closed my eyes, trying to relax despite the confined space.

The door burst open with a bang. Mrs. Weaver stormed in, her face flushed with righteous anger. She bypassed the reception desk with the entitlement of someone who had never been stopped.

'You,' she spat, striding toward me. 'You think you can threaten my daughter?'

Before I could react, she shoved me hard against the open bore of the machine. My head cracked against the metal housing. Pain exploded behind my eyes.

The machine gave a violent lurch. Warning lights flashed. A high-pitched whine filled the room, then a deafening acoustic burst as the magnetic field destabilized.

I clutched my ears, but it was too late. The sound had already done its damage.

Hospital security arrived within minutes, their radios crackling with urgent calls. But Mrs. Weaver was already gone, having slipped away in the confusion. No one stopped her. No one even tried.

I sat up slowly, my head spinning. Something was wrong. The world sounded muffled, as if I were listening through water. When I touched my left ear, my fingers came away wet with blood.

The damage was done. And like everything else, I would carry this scar alone.
