Chapter 4

I sat on the floor of the bedroom for a long time.

Not crying. Just sitting. The pieces of the dress were still arranged on the bed the way she had left them, and I couldn't stop looking at how careful she had been. The patience in it. The time it must have taken to cut each strip exactly that size.

My grandmother had worn that dress at twenty-four. She had been young and in love and had no idea yet what life would cost her. She kept it for forty years because it reminded her of the moment before things got complicated. She left it to me so I could remember what I came from.

I picked up one of the ivory strips and held it. The fabric was so old it felt like paper.

I thought about the girl I was twelve years ago. Twenty-two and so sure I understood what love meant. Standing in a parking garage in the dark while men I didn't know shoved me into a car, and thinking — I actually thought this — that it would be worth it. That Everest would be grateful. That when it was over he would look at me and finally understand what I was willing to give him.

He had held me after. His arms around me in a hospital room, his voice low and steady, saying I'm sorry, I'm so sorry, I had no idea they would go that far. I had believed every word.

I set the fabric down.

I picked up my phone and called Marcus, my head of operations.

'The penthouse,' I said. 'Tonight. Everything with his name on it — photographs, personal items, clothing. I want it packed and in storage by morning. Not thrown out. Stored. Labeled. Documented.' A pause. 'And pull the remaining lifelines. All of them, not gradual anymore. I want the sequencing calibrated so he feels it in stages — small things first, then the ones that matter. He needs to think it's market conditions until it's too late to think anything at all.'

Marcus didn't ask questions. He never did.

I hung up and looked around the room that was about to stop being ours and start being mine.

Selene's private office was on the thirty-first floor of a building that didn't have her name on it anywhere.

Braelyn arrived first. She had coffee and a legal pad and the expression she wore when she already knew the news was bad and was bracing for it to be worse. Hanna came in two minutes later with her laptop and a drive and the particular quiet she got when she was about to say something that couldn't be unsaid.

She connected the drive. She turned the laptop toward us.

'The bankruptcy,' she said. 'Twelve years ago. It wasn't real.'

The room went very still.

'The creditors who called in the debt — three shell companies, all traced back to a holding entity registered in Delaware six months before the crisis hit.' Hanna's voice was flat and precise, the voice she used when she needed to hold something terrible at a professional distance. 'The men who took you in the parking garage — I found two of them. One is doing marketing work in Phoenix. The other owns a bar in Austin. I have their real names. I have the payment records.' She scrolled. 'Wire transfers from a subsidiary account. The subsidiary traces back to Emely Schmidt's financial manager through two intermediary entities.'

Braelyn's pen stopped moving.

I looked at the screen. Numbers. Dates. Names I recognized and names I didn't.

Hanna kept going. 'The rescue. The rivals who supposedly let you go after Everest made contact — staged. The whole sequence was designed to manufacture a specific psychological outcome.' She paused. 'You were supposed to walk out of it believing he had saved you. That you owed him something you could never fully repay. That the relationship was forged in a crisis only he could navigate.'

I touched my bracelet.

Twelve years. I had been living inside a story someone else had written. Every memory I had of us — the beginning, the early years, the moments I had held onto like evidence that it had been real — every single one of them had been constructed on a lie they built before I ever walked into it.

Braelyn's jaw was set hard. She was staring at the screen like she could break it if she looked long enough.

Hanna closed the laptop and looked at me.

I blinked. Once. Slowly.

The office was quiet. Thirty-one floors up, Manhattan moved below us, indifferent and enormous, doing what it always did.

I looked at Hanna.

'Show me everything,' I said.

My voice was very calm. The kind of calm that has nothing to do with peace.

Hanna opened the laptop again. Braelyn's pen started moving.

I unwrapped my hand from my bracelet and folded both hands on the table in front of me.

We had work to do.
